Site Updates – Page Caching

Page 7: Today’s Agenda:

Page Caching – new default setting in CQ

Page Caching = static copies of pages stored on the web server for quick retrieval.

To improve site performance we changed settings

The server now saves and uses a static cached copy of a page for up to 3 days, unless the page is activated in Author

Static means that content lists on a page (such as a Documents tab page) do not update as new content is added

Page 8: Today’s Agenda:

Example – How this impacts author workflow: You’ve Made an Update to an Existing Document Page

1) Activate Document Page

3) Activate Documents Tab Page

Page Caching – new default setting in CQ

Alternative for active content areas: add a tag to an aggregation page to turn off caching on that page

This should only be pages where you are doing a lot of adding or updating of content.

Balance between fast page load for visitors and extra steps for authors

We can set this up for you – let us know what pages you would like to have tagged.

URL Redirects

It’s a new year! It’s a good time to make updates to pages/materials referencing old URLs.

Please work to make updates to out-of-date URLs on other websites, materials, etc

If you can’t make updates to URLS on external websites or printed materials, please verify that the URL redirects still work, let us know if they don’t

What we know about learning content today

The traditional self-paced course environment has changed

Online training is on the rise, and face-to-face is on the decline

States, regions, and library support organizations have already produced a lot of online learning content, and plan to create more

Content creators are open to coordinating their work and sharing their content with library staff beyond their state/region

Online training will continue to evolve, and we need to be able to adapt

Page 23: Today’s Agenda:

What: explore new training formats and discoveries about learning

Why: to address the need for current, engaging, and easy-to-access training content

How: collaborate on exploration and application of new ideas to enhance engagement and learning

Tag Taxonomy

Progress report:

Ahniwa, Sharon, and Megan met via WebEx on December 19th to go over our approach to determining tags for content. The group discussed the excellent groundwork that Sharon had laid for choosing tag keyword, and divvied up the content in webjunction.org “Explore Topics” to see what tags weren’t needed and what additional tags might be required. The group met again on January 16. Tag development is progressing well. Ahniwa will finish composing a list of suggested tags based on WebJunction content and share with his group prior to the next meeting.
