FOR ONLY the second time in its 17-year history,“Siete Palabras,” the traditional commemorationof Jesus’ last words on the Cross, held annually

at the historic Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City on Good Friday, will have a woman among its sevenpreachers.

The preacher is Sr. CatherineEdith Cruz, OP, dean of Colegiode San Juan de Letran de Man-aoag (formerly Our Lady of Manaoag College) in Pangasinanand member of the ReligiousMissionaries of St. Dominic.

She will be only the second woman to deliver the address. The first was Sr. Letty Ham, OP of the Sisters of Our Lady of Reme-dies, who delivered one of the Si-ete Palabras about a decade ago.

The testimonials of faith willalso be given by women: Sr. May Escalano, OP, who serves farmersand people with disabilities inPampanga; Lourdes Ukila, a teach-er of poor children in Dagat-da-

gatan, Navotas; Lucy Guya, who works with indigenous people; Sr.Cecilia Espenilla, OP, who attendsto victims of human trafficking;Catherine Ramos, OP, a dedicatedteacher in Aquinas School; and Sr.Elvira Delfonso, OP, a survivor of two critical ailments.

Siete Palabras producer Fr.Christopher Jeffrey Aytona, OPsaid the inclusion of more wom-en in the yearly program was in-spired by Pope Francis, who said

during his recent visit in thecountry: “Women have much totell us in today’s society. They cansee things with a different eye.”

Father Aytona also stressedthe contributions of women inevangelization, citing famousDominican saints such asCatherine of Siena, Margaret of Castello, and Rose of Lima.

Being a yearly production of the Dominican Province of thePhilippines, “Siete Palabras,” inits earlier years, only had Do-

minican friars as preachers forthe “Seven Last Words.” Last

year, however, a diocesan priestand a lay person were includedin the roster of preachers,

which “drew positive feedback,”said Father Aytona.

“The Order of Preachers [orthe Dominican Order] believesthat, as a family, preachingshould not be limited only tothe friars,” he says.

This year, the Lenten special will focus on the official churchcelebrations of the Year of thePoor and Year of the Consecrat-ed Life, and the year-longpreparation for the 800th foun-dation anniversary of the Orderof Preachers in 2016.

    Partnering with Radio Veritas

and the Catholic Media Net- work, “Siete Palabras” intendsto reach Filipinos abroadthrough the program’s live in-ternet streaming, on April 3, 12noon to 3 p.m. It will be broad-cast live by GMA 7.

The other preachers are Fr.Gallardo Bombase, OP from Al-bay; Fr. Norman Quilaquil, OPfrom Davao; Manila diocesanpriest Fr. Carlo del Rosario; Fr.Enrico Gonzales, OP from Santo

    Domingo priory in Quezon City;

    How celebs observe Lent

Introspective mode “on.”Even celebrities take a breatherso that they may pay homage toour Immortal Superstar, JesusChrist.

Boots Anson-Roa: I will re-flect on the unconditional andimmutable love of God. Godloves us whether or not we de-serve His love. He loves us

whoever we are. He loved thepure and the sacred, the in-nocent and the virtuous, butHe also loved the thief who was crucified beside Him,

the prostitute who was al-most stoned to death, theSamaritan woman at the well, the tax collector whobecame His follower, His

favored disciple who de-nied Him three times, and

His beloved apostle andkeeper of the purse who

betrayed Him for 30pieces of silver. God

loves us not because we are worthy of His love, but be-cause He is a lovingGod. His love for ushas nothing to do

with us. It haseverything to do with Him.God’s love for us never changes,no matter how often we offendHim. He forgives us now, just asHe did on the cross—

bruised, battered and dying be-cause of our sins. He pleaded, thus: “Father, forgive them forthey know not what they aredoing.”

    China Cojuangco-Gon-zalez: My reflection

will center on my gratitude to-

wards JesusChrist whodied on thecross to save

us. I thank Himfor my happy, healthy family;my in-laws who continue to ac-cept me into their family; mostespecially for my husband whotakes good care of me and ourlittle Bachuchi. I also like tothank Jesus for the gift of moth-erhood. I will reflect on how tobecome a better mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and abetter Catholic.

Richard Poon: Has my lovefor God gone warmer or colder?

Am I more intimately involved with God this year than last year? What areas of my lifehave I not surrendered to Him?

Christine Bersola-Babao: I will reflect on why there is somuch injustice and evil in this

     world.Christian Bautista: I will re-

flect on how, throughGod’s wisdom, I can

become a better per-son in the entertain-ment industry, to bea good influence onthe nation’s youth.

    Precious LaraQuigaman: This

world is not my home; I’m here tem-porarily. I hope to beable to set my sightson things not seen, onthings above and not

on earthly pleasuresand treasures. To livemy life for God’s glory alone, for it is allabout Jesus, the only

     way, truth and life.Miriam

Quiambao-Roberto:Psalm 90:12: “Teachus to number ourdays, that we may gain a heart of wis-dom.”

I will be reflectingon life itself and how

I can live it to the fullest, giventhat life is short.

Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan: I will simply reflect on God’samazing grace.

John Arcilla: May we truly find within us the real meaningof poverty in spirit. So that wecan start transforming ourselvesinto good citizens of this nationand planet, rather thanremain a community of com-

    plainers who do nothing.Choose PH

A SIDE from Holy Wednesday, it also happens tobe April Fool’s Day. Is this just coincidence?Perhaps it’s a subtle Lenten reminder that we

must reflect on our follies so we may become im-proved versions of ourselves by Easter Sunday.

“I saw her on my timeline, singing an Aegis song,” sabi niRodfil. “We did some coversand, later, I asked her to be my partner for the audition… the

judges at the Mall of Asia wereforeigners, so they weren’t fa-miliar with us.”

Sa kanilang kakaibangpagsasanib-puwersa, sabi niRodfil, “A grandma singing an

Aegis song is a rare find. Being

    odd partners works; would you

expect a  lola and a weird guy toperform a duet? I risked mixingcomedy with music and I’mhappy that majority of the

     judges said yes.”

I was willing to leave if that

was the only way Lola Fe couldadvance. It was a big honor justto be there and perform,” aniya.“It’s a good thing Lola Fe im-pressed everyone. Mr. Fosterhad a point, though, and I re-spect his opinion.”

Kinuwento ni Rodfil kunggaano niya naramdaman kunggaano sila kasuwerte at napilisilang makipagtagisan: “I sawmany talented people at theMall of Asia; I had seen some of them join contests on TV. When

we were picked, I said to my-self, there must be a [bigger]reason that our partnership was

Asia’s Got Talent. “I hope shepursues a singing career. It feelsgreat to inspire others, regard-less of age. It’s never too late todream.”
