competition for three consecutive years), all eyes are onthe winners of the recent Binibining Pilipinas pageant.The INQUIRERs Entertainment

team, with representatives fromthe companys other platforms,sat down for a Q&A session

with Miss Universe PhilippinesAriella Arida, Bb. Pilipinas-In-ternational Bea Rose Santiago,Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism Cindy Mi-randa, Miss SupranationalPhilippines Mutya Datul andfirst runner-up Pia Wurtzbach.

How have things been sofar?

Wurtzbach: Theyve beengreat. Weve been doing inter-

views and public appearances people recognize us and theyreinterested in what we have to say.

Miranda: Im still over-whelmed still shocked bywhats happening People lookup to us and we have a lot of

fans Were not ordinary peopleanymore; were beauty queens!

Arida: Im getting ready forthe training. Ive started goingto the gym again. Im excited toknow how much more trainingI will have to go through.

Santiago: Im more relaxednow, more confident. I thinknothing changed deep inside.Im still the same person. Butnow that we have more follow-

ers, anything we say will reflecton us and the Bb. Pilipinas fam-ily. So Im more careful about

what I do and say.

Datul: Parang nabunutanako ng tinik after the pageant.Kasi nakipag-compete ka saganoon maraming candidates,napaka-proud ko sa sarili ko.Nakaka-inspire kasi na isa akosa mga nanalo.

How did each of you pre-

If you said something wrong,everyone would remember itforever. The peoples reaction

was the scariest part.

The first runner-ups role isalso important.

Wurtzbach: Im the onlyrunner-up, the one to take theplace of whoever will be unableto participate in any interna-tional pageant. I have to train

with them, too. I gain experi-ence by being with them, which

would be an advantage should Ijoin the competition again nextyear.

Would you want an inter-preter during your respective

international pageants?

Santiago: Its an advantagefor the whole world to see us as

Asians who speak English well.It will impress other people.

Wurtzbach: Most Filipinosknow the language well. Whatsmore important is the substanceof the answer. You dont have tohave perfect grammar or dic-tion. Latinas have strong ac-cents and their grammar is not

flawless but they still win.

Most of you do not haveboyfriends. Is it because youwant to focus on the pageant?

Santiago: We have no timekasi. And it takes a lot for aman to be with someone whosnot gonna be there. So, mahi-rap po.

Arida: Timing lang na Imsingle and Im doing Binibini.

Nagkataon lang din. Ako angtaong know your priorities first.So timing lang talaga.

Miranda: I dont think itmatters if you have a boyfriendor not. You just have to knowhow to balance things. Ive been

with my boyfriend for a yearnow. We were schoolmates.

Did you join pageantswhen you were in school?

Miranda: You had to forgetthere were people in front of

you, and focus on your answer.

Wasnt the Q&A more diffi-cult than dieting and being

beautiful all the time?Miranda: Yes. Everyone was

beautiful and knew how to pro-ject herself. Pero sa Q&A, doonnagtatalo talaga.

Arida: That was the make-or-break part because people

would quote whatever you said.

Arida: Before Bb. Pilipinas, wewere trained to answer questions.But we also had our own way ofpreparing. I read during my sparetime. It helped being able to talk

But it always seems scary.

Santiago: What was scarywas, it felt like you were battlingyourself. When you were there,even if you knew the answer,

Arida: Hindi talaga. Noongafter na lang makatapos ng col-lege doon lang ako na-open sapageants and modeling. Kasi ac-tually iyong mga friends ko angnakakita ng potential sa akin.

Iyong kind of environment nakinalakihan ko different siyafrom the environment kungsaan ako nandito ngayon. OnceI started doing modeling andpageants, doon ko na-realize nathis is what I love.

Datul: Kasi 16 ako nagsimulamag-join sa pageants sa provincenamin. Nasalihan ko na sigurolahat, honestly. Biglaan langkasi. Nananalo naman. Pero ibaiyong laban sa Maynila, maramikang na-encounter na mas higitpa sa iyo. Last year nag-join akong dalawang national pageants,nakuha lang ako sa finalists. Sin-abihan ako ng friend ko nasumali ka ng Bb. Pilipinas, bakadoon iyong destiny mo.

Miranda: I have joinedpageants before, the last one

was at the University of SantoTomas. I was runner-up to Ja-nine [Tugonon]. I really waited

for this. . Akala ko hindi na akomakakasali, palagi kasing napo-postpone. Takot talaga ako, andthen I found the courage to join.

I grew up kasi inspiration kotalaga beauty queens. Parangperfect sila, complete package.hindi lang sila maganda, matali-no pa.

Now that you are a beautyqueen, do you think you areperfect like them?

Miranda: I patterned my-self after beauty queens. Sosana ganoon na rin angtingin sa akin ng ibangtao kasi iyon ang gustokong marating eh.

Wurtzbach: Firstpageant ko ito. Ive

never joined before. Pero mara-mi na ang nagsasabi sa akin nasumali ako. Bakit hindi ka nalang mag-beauty queen? Perohindi ko rin po alam kung kani-no lalapit, paano mag-apply?

Wala akong idea. So hindi kosiya nagawan ng any action.

And I was busy with acting, kasiako ang nagpro-provide sa fam-ily namin. So hindi ko rin mai-

wan ang trabaho ko kasi akoang nag-aalaga sa kanila. Perongayon na okay na sila, naka-try na ako. So luckily, sa first tryko, kasama naman ako sa Top5. Its a big achievement. And Ithink this is just the beginningfor me.

What is your advocacy?

Santiago: Im a GawadKalinga ambassador and Binibi-ni has a community that we ac-tually visited. I think the nextcommunity I will help is in Mas-bate, my province. I would lovefor BPCI (Bb. Pilipinas CharitiesInc.) to help more communitiesin my province.

Wurtzbach: From a personal

experience, I feel very passionateabout awareness against domes-tic violence to women and chil-dren. It didnt happen to me, buta family member. And I dontthink that I have to be a victimfirst in order to help the cause.So thats why I would choosethat one. I saw the campaign in

Avon, in our sponsor visit, andthey have a talk about it as well.So after that I decided to look upother campaigns that have that

cause. So thats what I did.

Miranda: As a tourism grad-uate and as Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism, I hope I can help theDepartment of Tourism. Nowthat I have the title, the power

to inspire people, it would beeasier for me to help.

Arida: Aside from the BPCIproject, I will probably be involvedin AIDS awareness because its theadvocacy of Miss Universe.

Datul: Aside from OperationSmile and Gawad Kalinga,sumama ako sa friends ko, mgapast candidates ng Bb. Pilpinas,pumupunta sila sa Child Haus.Nakapunta ako doon, isa iyonsa gusto ko maging advocacy.

Alam ko kung gaano kahirap naang pamilya may sakit. Mom kokasi may problema sa dugo. So-brang naaawa ako sa mga batana napapagdaanan na nila anghirap ng buhay.

Are you ready for interna-tional pageants that can beruthless?

Santiago: Yes, marami kasi

akong kaibigan na past winnerswho tell me, warn me. And Ivebeen to an internationalpageant once. Pero miss Inter-national is one of the biggest,so iba ito. Marami ngang

naririnig na laslasan ng ano,taguan, pero you just have to besmart about it. Kailangan maylock ka, and pangalanan lahat.

Arida: Yes, super competitivedin ng candidates sa Miss Uni-

verse. Pero ready na ako. Kasibago naman kami ipadala doonibi-brief kami. At nakausap kona ang past winners, like Venus[Raj], Shamcey [Supsup] andJanine [Tugonon], especially siJanine, parang iyong na-experi-ence niya sa Miss Universe naik-

wento niya sa akin. So nagkaka-roon na talaga ako ng idea. Ex-cited na sila para sa akin.

Miranda: Hindi pa 100 per-cent, kaya makakatulong talagaang trainings. Kailangan langng focus. If ever nandoon na,kung may laslalsan, dapat ala-gaan ang sarili at gamit.

Datul: Yes, ready na po ako.

Kasi sanay na po ako sa pres-sure, stress, problema. Katuladdin ng buhay ko. Kung paanoko nalampasan ang hirap ngbuhay namin, alamkong malalampasanko rin ang pressuresa international. Fo-cus lang and i-se-cure ang mgabagay, walangmawawala o

magkakaproblema. Disiplinalang.

Pia, are you ready for nextyears Binibini?

Wurtzbach: Ngayon pa langready na ako, iniisip ko na siya.Pero siyempre Im still focusingon being first runner up. Imstill enjoying my experience

with them. And they can sharetheir experiences with me, kasiako lang first-timer dito. Andsana, hopefully, makakasali ulitako next year, and pasahanninyo ako ng korona ninyo.

Any message for your fans?
