brewed in temperatures rangingfrom 70 to 60 degrees (Celsius).Anything beyond this will makethe tea taste bitter,” he ex-plained. “The brewing shouldtake nine minutes, because theleaves have to spread,” addedChang.
The chemistry doctorate de-gree-holder said Fiftea focuseson brewing the perfect tea, which is the base for all of thebeverages that the store offers.Whether using Jasmine, Oo-long, Green or Red, all teabases for the beverages must bebrewed the only way it shouldbe made, he explained, addingthe tea must stay for a periodno longer than three hours.
Aside from employing strictbrewing practices, Fiftea alsotakes pride in using only thefinest ingredients for its menuitems.
“All ingredients pass through
what we call ‘SGS laboratorytests’ to determine if they aresuitable in producing the per-fect milk tea,” Chang shared.
Because of this, the tealeaves and creamers used in thePhilippines are imported. Theonly locally-sourced ingredientsare the fresh fruits (especiallythe calamansi), milk, ice cream, and the brown sugar which isused in making the syrup.
And to make sure that thebest ingredients are perfectlyprocessed, Fiftea’s baristas un-dergo a crucial training pro-gram, to come up with an eliteplatoon of personnel who canguarantee that the company’sstrictest standards are appliedin all the products that comeout of the kitchen.

IF YOU think you have tried all the milk tea in theland, think again. Even with the deluge of milk teastores that the Philippines has seen recently, Filipinoshave yet to discover the beverage maker that dominat-ed the Taiwanese market for two decades now.
Taiwanese milk tea store“Fiftea” brought its own brandof refreshments to the Philip-pines, the first market outsideTaiwan and China that thebrand has explored.
Dr. Si Chang shared at an in-timate gathering with the localmedia yesterday the experiencehe had with milk tea stores inthe country during a recent trip.
“I was surprised! They’re to-tally missing the point of the
’tea.’ What they’re just servingare tea-flavored drinks,” Changtold members of local media atFiftea’s third Philippine outlet atthe Rustan’s Supermarket in Al-phaland Place at the corner ofMalugay Street and Ayala Av-enue Ext. in Makati City.
Chang said the stores he ob-served either used tea bags, orwere brewing tea leaves the“wrong” way.
“Tea leaves should be
progress, and stayed for addi-tional training,” explainedChang. “And the Filipino baris-tas impressed the trainer,” headded.
Since opening its first storein Taiwan in 1994, Fiftea onlyset foot outside Taiwan last yearwith the inauguration of its firstoutlet in China. It took decadesfor the company to develop aunique franchising strategy be-cause it wanted to make surethat all products across all out-lets will carry the brand’sunique standards.
And with the Philippines asits first market outside Taiwanand China, Chang said Fifteaplans to make the country ahub for its further expansion inthe region.
“Baristas may be trainedhere in the Philippines, and thetrainees may be deployed to ei-ther Indonesia or Singapore, orother countries where Fifteamay open in the future,” Changshared.
But for now, Fiftea plans toopen around 40 more stores inthe country. It hopes to expandits customer base through wordof mouth. “Our customers bringin their friends, and then theirfriends come back with otherfriends,” Chang explained.
Fiftea stores are also locatedat the ground floor of LepantoBldg. and the Lower GroundFloor of Cityland III, both inMakati. A fourth store is set toopen in SM Davao next month.

Great monster
The opening scene in Godzil-la takes place somewhere in thePhilippines in 1999. See themovie in a good theater so youcan hear clearly a few voicesspeak in Tagalog.
In the movie, a monsteremerging from deep in theearth in the Philippines gestatesfor many years in a nuclearplant in Japan, where theAmerican Joe Brody (BryanCrantson) works as a specialist.Joe loses his wife Sandra (Juli-ette Binoche) in an accident inthe nuclear plant, caused, at thetime unknown to the humans,by the gestating monster. Sincethen, Joe has devoted his timeto search for answers why theaccident happened.
Fifteen years later, the mon-ster wakes up and wreaks havocin Tokyo. As the humans scram-ble to defeat the monster, a sec-ond MUTO (Massive Unidenti-fied Terrestrial Object) appearsand wreaks havoc in the US.Scientist Dr. Serizawa (KenWatanabe) leads the human ef-fort to control the menace usinginformation collected by Joe.Joe’s soldier son, Ford (AaronTaylor-Johnson) joins the mili-tary charge. Just when thingslook hopeless for the humans, athird monster awakens from thePacific to fight the MUTOs. Thatthird daikaiju (great monster) isGodzilla.
This Godzilla is a differentGodzilla from the Japanese To-ho versions for a few reasons.First, I like the old Gojiramovies because they usuallyhad strong female charactersin the story. Because this newone is from Hollywood, thelead is male. Tsh.
The movie’s weaknessis with its lead character,Ford and the actor por-traying him. There’s littleto latch on Ford’s charac-ter, there's nothing toroot for him whether helives or dies—the more emo-tional story is with Joe. Taylor-Johnson looks miscast as alead—his screen presence isn'tstrong enough.
The movie itself is a little flat—it doesn't build up to an excit-ing monster battle in the cli-max. It just isn’t as fun as theother recent kaiju movie, PacificRim. Godzilla looks great, though, design and effects-wise.
Also, the Japanese movieshas Godzilla as a bad guy. There's a reason for this—be-cause every time Godzillaemerged to destroy cities, itbrought out the strength andresilience from humans, whowere to blame for the menacein the first place. Kind of likekarma.
This movie makes the lord ofmonsters a superhero. Tsh.
I ’m both happy and sad for this edition of the kingof monsters. Happy, because it is Godzilla. Sad, be-cause it’s not the same Godzilla from Japan, char-
acteristically speaking.
‘Banaue’ at the CCP on May 17
THIS movie version says Godzilla was made in the Philippines.
WE used to know Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the costumed hero Kick Assin the movie movie of the same name. He plays soldier here.
GERARDO de Leon’s “Ba-naue” will have a specialscreening at the Tangha-lang Manuel Conde of theCultural Center of thePhilippines (CCP) on Satur-day, May 17, 4 p.m. Thefree screening is part of theyearlong celebration of thecentennial of the nationalartist for film.
The movie’s lead actressand producer, Nora Aunor, isexpected to grace the occa-sion. The 1975 film tells thestory of the Ifugao tribe, builders of the famed Ba-naue Rice Terraces.
The screening is present-ed by the CCP, Society ofFilipino Archivists for Film, and the National Commis-sion for Culture and theArts. Seats are limited, soseating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.Bayani San Diego Jr.
