CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. January 21, 2018 Today’s Readings ome. (Mark 1:17) Scripture has a way of condensing a lot of information into a few short sentences, and today’s Gospel is a perfect example. It’s possible that all Jesus had to do was say, “Come after me” to get Peter and Andrew to drop their nets, leave their families, and become disciples. But it’s far more likely that this story is the climax of a number of other encounters Jesus had with them. This observation can teach us two things. First, our decision to follow Jesus is never a onetime choice. Second, our decision to help other people follow Jesus is never a onetime choice. Some people marry only a few days after they meet. It’s unusual, but it does happen. And when it does, the couple has to deepen their marriage commitment if they want to stay together. Just so, even if Peter and Andrew said yes at a moment’s notice, their commitment to Jesus needed to grow. If it didn’t, they would have eventually left Jesus. The same is true for us. No matter how mature our yes is, the Holy Spirit wants to take it to a deeper level. He wants to help us mature in our commitment to him so that we can know him better and become more effective servants of his kingdom. This principle applies to our call to help other people follow Jesus. It’s always possible that our children and friends will immediately take our advice and give their lives to the Lord. But knowing human nature, it’s more likely that they will need more time and attention than one simple invitation. This means we need to be consistent in mirroring Jesus to them. Never stop showing them your love. Never stop caring for them. Never stop telling them that Jesus is about love and mercy, redemption and reconciliation. Jesus is calling you to follow him today. He is asking you to keep evangelizing people with love and compassion. It’s a challenging call, but you don’t have to do it alone. Jesus has all the grace you need. “Lord, I will follow you all the days of my life.” Taken from The Word Among Us, January/February 2018 Vol. 37, Number 2: Used with permission. CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. January 21, 2018

Today’s Readings

ome. (Mark 1:17) Scripture has a way of condensing a lot of information into a few short sentences, and today’s Gospel is a perfect

example.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Cardinal’s Appeal

Many parishioners have received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl asking them to consider making a pledge to the 2018 Cardinal’s Appeal. The Cardinal’s Appeal funds the operation of the Archdiocese and services that support ministries active here in our parish. For example, Appeal funds support Catholic Charities, the Spanish Catholic Center, seminarian activi-ties, continuing education of priests, and school tuition assistance. The Appeal theme is: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” (Mt. 6:33) We can make the Kingdom manifest in our lives and in the lives of those around us through works of charity and compassion. The Cardinal’s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the need of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2018 Cardinal’s Appeal.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Looking for a convenient way to support our parish offertory?

Faith Direct is the innovative solution that allows you to support our parish using electronic funds transfer from either a credit card or bank account. It is a hassle-free, simple solution for today’s busy families. Sign up using the enrollment form on the other side or go online to www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code DC284 to enroll today!

How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing [email protected], or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.
