With July 4th onWednesday we will not be having an auction on Tuesday, July 3rd. This pastweek I had the privilage of heading to California and attending the WorldLivestock auctioneering championships and livestock marketing associationmeetings. First the winners. Bailey Ballou from Elgin, Okla. was crownedchampion. I had the honor of teaching Bailey in 2003 at the Missouri AuctionSchool. Darren Carter from So. Carolina finished 2nd and placing 3rd out of 33contestants was one of the best friends I have, Brian Little from Wann, Okla. Itwill be fantastic to be here on Aug. 3rd for our 62nd anniversary auction thatwill feature Baily and Brian selling all day. The contest was held at TurlockLivestock which is just south of Sacramento in one of the most uniqueagriculture areas of the world, the San Joaquin Valley. They offered over 6,000head of feeder cattle and the genetics would be outstanding. Rural and urbanvalues collide here every day. It’s amazing to drive by a shopping center andimmediately past it will be a 20 thousand head dairy. Produce abounds in thisdesert valley. I’m amazed they can grow enough food for their dairies much asless enough food to feed a significant portion of this country. The dairies arehuge. One auction I attended sells nothing but cull dairy cows 3 days a week.This week they marketed over 2,000 of them. I met a gentleman who has a verylarge operation. They have 40 thousand baby Holstein calves on the bottle everyday. Understandably they have a full time person that does nothing but pick upnewborns at the dairies every day of the year. My coolest thing about the tripwas sitting next to an 86-year-old man named Martin Morgan, a consigner onthe auction of 139 home raised 600# steers. Martin, a Jewish immigrant, spent4 years in Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp. When Martin told me he LOVEDAMERICA, he meant it. I think of all the struggles we go through every day. Iknow mine are pretty small compared to Martin’s. Our industry is full of greatpeople. We here at the Dunlap Livestock Auction are happy to be able to serveyou.

FED CATTLE/WEIGH COWS TUES, JUNE 12TH: Weigh cow trade was basicallysteady from a week ago! Fat cattle trade was $1 lower. Show lists are quite a bit biggerthan one week ago. More new crop calves showing up. Sure feels like we’ll get throughthem pretty quick.
