Executive Summary

Overview: The first day (Smarter Cities for a sustainable future) will look at how can we create a sustainable city in the current economic climate and we’ll make a bold start to answering this question by examining how to get the whole city involved.

Expected outcomes: On going dialogue between civically minded city leaders and stakeholders who want a part in shaping the future of our cities towards a sustainable future, who will develop a coordinated approach to what's required to prepare our cities for the 22nd century.

Why attend: You will have the opportunity to discuss and collaborate with other senior leaders, develop new actionable ideas for enhancing the sustainability and “livability” of UK cities for citizens. Be inspired by forward-thinking speakers, explore new ways of working across public and private sector boundaries and discuss the obstacles that might get in the way and how they can be overcome.

How will this stimulate action? Aside from the networking opportunities that this event provides, participants will be able to submit “pledges” on the day and connect with like-minded individuals over a particular challenge, programme or initiative on a large wall at the event. There will also be the opportunity to submit questions for the panel discussion in the afternoon.

Bubble 1 - Place

OverviewInfrastructure, buildings, parks, ambience, noise, smell, transport, things to see and do, overall "feel / buzz" of a city.

Discussion topics to cover

What makes a city feel liveable?

how we design our cities to make them great places to live and work, so that citizens feel proud of their cities physical environment.

The future of city planning

The life and vibrancy of a city comes partly from the appearance of its buildings, streets and spaces, but mainly from its uses and activities, and most importantly its people.

Moving between places needs to be convenient, safe, pleasant and easy for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users, and other vehicles in our city, balancing the needs of all types of transport.

Discussion topics to cover

In the twenty-first century, growth, economic value and competitive differentiation of cities will increasingly be derived from people and their skills, creativity and knowledge, as well as the capacity of the economy to create and absorb innovation. To compete in this new economic environment, cities will need to better apply advanced information technology, analytics and systems thinking to develop a more citizen-centric approach to services. By doing so, they can better attract, create, enable and retain their citizens’ skills, knowledge and creativity

How will the current economic climate effect the development of sustainable cities?

UK cities role in the global economy – competing for business

How can the Public & Private sector work together to support positive urban growth?

What can cities do to improve their economic performance?

Discussion topics to cover

What are the pressures facing local communities

As city communities continue to grow and change in diversity, how can they remain relaxed and at peace, with a strong sense of place and citizens able to get along with each other?

With the key question of immigration and diversity in the media spotlight how can cities build or maintain a good track record in community relations.

What is the meaning of community spirit in today’s city?

What are the strengths and challenges of having such as rich and diverse community of people from different backgrounds living in our cities?
