Wrapping Paper...To Recycle or Not to Recycle?

When trying to determine if a paper product is

recyclable, we often go by the simple rule, 'If it tears, throw it into the recycling bin.' However,

wrapping paper poses several issues when it comes to recycling. Many of the materials used to create

specialty wrapping paper include dyes, laminations, non-paper additives like glitter, foil, or plastic, and tape. All of these added materials deem most

wrapping papers NON-Recyclable.

If you are using a wrapping paper for your gifts that

contains any of the before mentioned items, your paper will more than likely end up in a landfill. If

you choose to be a 'Green Wrapper', higher

quality papers do exist that can be recycled they are free of any foils, glitter, or add-ons. Tape will have

to be removed after opening.

Holiday Tips: Don’t Advertise Your Gifts

Don’t publicize new and expensive gifts by placing boxes out on the curb. Big screen TV’s, laptops,

iPads, and other expensive gifts can attract the attention of potential buglers. Take time to break or cut down your boxes and place them inside your

recycling container.

If boxes are too large, you may place them out on the curb for bulk trash pick-up. Be sure to hide the

writing on the box by turning and facing the box inward in the pile.

For questions regarding sanitation services or to

sign up for bulk trash service, please register on-

line at www.tollesonaz.org/bulktrash or by

calling (623) 936-7141.
