1 October 2011 (The full color copy of this newsletter with pictures and hamfest flyers can be found at www.az-arrl.org or http://www.arrl.org/Groups/view/arizona ) EMERGENCY COMMUNICAITONS After a summer of relenting heat, the largest wildfire in Arizona history and rather strange weather, summer is finally over. This means that the public service season is beginning in at least the warmer climates of the state. There are a number of public service events scheduled around the state. Maricopa County alone has 34 events for hams to volunteer for. Public Service Events are the perfect way to practice and hone your disaster communications skills. Contact your local group and sign up for at least one this year. Remember, the only difference between a public service event and a real disaster is one is scheduled and one isn’t. On November 9th 2011 at 12 Noon there will be a National Emergency Alert Test. The test will include all television and radio stations including cable and satellite and will last for three minutes. The Arizona Department of Emergency Management has asked the ham community to help spread the word of the upcoming test. The official public awareness campaign kicks off October 12th. Watch the media for further information. I’ll also try and post further information in next month’s newsletter and on the azhamserve yahoo group as more information comes available.
