Mission Statement
1
On behalf of the Staff and Board of Directors, I am pleased to present the 2010 Annual FinancialReport. The report provides a comprehensive picture of the Tom Joyner Foundation's finances forthe 2010 fiscal year and a snapshot of important issues concerning our future.
More than ever, the Tom Joyner Foundation is committed to the future of Historically Black Collegesand Universities. HBCUs continue to play an important part of educating our nation’s youth andproducing future doctors, lawyers, business executives, scientists and philanthropists. Even asthe country is working its way out of one of its toughest economic periods in decades, the Foundationhas been working with HBCUs around the country in various ways through programs, scholarshipsand capacity building.
You know HBCUs are close to my heart. Every time I speak at a commencement, I am thrilled toget the hugs from students, parents, Aunties, Momos and PawPaws who are thankful, tearful and full of pride to have a college graduate. That’s why this 12-year-old Foundation is forever appreciative to the thousands of donors who have supported us, and as a result thestudents, faculty and administrators at these HBCUs.
Look, I know this economy is taking its toll on so many of us, but I remain driven to make sure our beloved HBCUs are here today –and tomorrow. It may seem cliché, but James Weldon Johnson said it best in his poem, Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, and what hasbecome known as the Black national anthem:
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,Let us march on till victory is won.
So, no matter what anyone says, the Tom Joyner Foundation will invest in programs that will continue to producescholars, athletes, politicians, corporate executives – in short, game changers. That’s right, students who willmake a difference in whatever field they enter. I know that graduates of HBCUs get an experience that’s en-riching, nurturing and confidence-building. That’s the foundation of success. Now, and well into the future, theFoundation will help arm the next generation of leaders with the tools they need to succeed.
Yours truly
Tom Joyner , Chairman

To Our Valued Supporters:
The Tom Joyner Foundation is extremely grateful to your support of our steadfast mission to support Historically BlackColleges and Universities through scholarships, capacity building and special programs.
Despite one of the most challenging fundraising years ever, the Foundation focused its efforts on several key initiativeswhile at the same time developing a strategy to adapt to the unstable economic climate. During the year, we (1)Assisted HBCUs as part of our ‘Schools of the Month’ program; (2) Helped keep black males in college and (3) Offeredcapacity building to help HBCUs develop sustaining fundraising campaigns; and (4) Raised in excess of $7 million.
In 2010, the Foundation worked with a streamlined staff and budget to survive a difficult economy that has been playinghavoc with philanthropies all around the country. If anything, we intensified our efforts to seek out new corporate andindividual donors from a broader number of sources.
For our programs, we awarded a Full Ride Scholarship to our third student - Cheyenne Boyce – from Detroit, Michigan, who is currently at Spelman College. Cheyenne, along with the previous Full Ride Scholars - had to have a 3.5 GPA, a
1300 on the SAT (Math and Verbal Only) and/or a minimum ACT score of 28. The Full Ride scholars receive full tuition waivers and stipends to coverroom and board (on campus only) and books. To renew the scholarship for up to 10 semesters, the scholar is expected to keep a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0scale) and 15 credit hours per semester.
As part of its on-going commitment to increasing the number of black males in college, the Foundation awarded nearly $80,000 to 52 Hercules Scholars, named after our late Board Member and my Grandfather Hercules Joyner, and remained an integral part of the Foundation's efforts to retain the numberof black males attending college.
The 11th Annual Fantastic Voyage™ successfully sailed out of Galveston, Texas to provide nearly 4,000 guests the ultimate ‘Partywith a Purpose’, sailing to Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico.
As we look forward, the Foundation is evaluating its programs, and is developing a plan to better serve the needs of HBCUs in newand exciting ways. We’re planning to build off our legacy of helping to keep students in school, but also:
• Strengthen the capacity building for all of our HBCUs,• Introduce new programs that will broaden HBCU students’ educational experiences• Provide more tools to enable supporters and donors to engage with the Foundation• Identify new sources of grants and strategic partnerships
Now, more than ever, the Foundation believes that HBCUs can play a critical role in preparing the next generation of students tocompete more aggressively in this fast-paced, ever-changing world.
