TOM’s main space is a 300-500 capacity room with the flexibility to showcase everything from rock bands to exciting new theatre or cabaret. Recently re-fitted, TOM is also home to production facilities and art and photography galleries. TOM’s bar, open on all main event nights, also hosts its own entertainment from DJs to live music and comedy.

TOM’s auditorium suits intimate theatre, shows which demand large stage space, or even creative staging arrangements. TOM has a strong, loyal theatre audience.

TOM’s Main House and Bar both host live comedy, mixed-bill and touring. Seating can be arranged in rows, or with cabaret tables. We also host Brighton Comedy Festival.

Bands, musicians, choirs, orchestras and audiences agree that gigs at TOM sound great. Gigs regularly sell out, and we also host club nights with live acts.

Combined with TOM’s Bar, the auditorium becomes an ideal event space for private or public functions. Launch events, celebrations, conferences, and bespoke dining would all be ideally placed at TOM. The elegant Waterloo Room is a fantastic additional function space.

Recently fully refurbished, TOM’s Main House is a fantastic 11mx24m room which

can be built in a huge range of set-ups. Hanging between gorgeous wooden roof

beams, the truss is 5.15m above floor level. Standard theatre, music and comedy

staging arrangments comprise a 6 to 6.6m stage at one end, however the space has

the flexibility to accomodate multiple stages, catwalk staging or other arrangements

to suit your show or event.

192 raked seats can be extended out and combined with extra freestanding seats to

boost seated capacity to 300. Maximum capacity for audience members standing is

500. Variations on these arrangements are numerous, and we’re happy to discuss the

best set up for your event. Below we have summarised the standard specification.

Stage door is located on the South side of building -

Lower Market Street – with ramp access. There are

parking restrictions and access issues for vehicles

over 7.5tonnes. Please check parking in advance.

Laundry facilities and personnel can be made available

on request.

seating and mirrors

The majority of these dressing rooms are located

underneath the Main House, and therefore do not

Any equipment supplied by the hirer must comply with standards

equivalent to British/EU safety standards. TOM will only work

with equipment that meets relevant British/EU safety standards.

Electrical and sound equipment should be sufficiently insulated

to protect the user from electrical shock and the equipment

should be protected by a suitable electrical trip mechanism.

It will be at the sole discretion of the TOM Production Manager

to stop any use of equipment supplied by the hirer that does

not meet these high standards or which causes concern for the

health and safety of the persons using such equipment.

TOM operates a PPE policy and recommends that local crew

wear steel toe capped boots, hard hats and protective gloves

during the load in & out. Should stage hands and technicians

be required to climb above 3 metre on access equipment, we

strongly advise that fall arrest equipment is worn. Personal PPE

is not provided by TOM.

TOM will advise the hirer of any curfews, inspections by

licensing, fire or safety departments. All in house equipment

safety certificates are available on request.

Every hirer must supply evidence of Public Liability insurance

and risk assessments.

The Hirer is to advise TOM of any strobe, water, fire, smoke,

aerial activity during their performance. Helium balloons are not

permitted in the venue.

Structural loading permits only one person to be suspended

from the central node of each wooden beam for aerial work.

Suspension from truss to be reviewed at installation.

The Hirer must advise TOM if the performers have any special

requirements, eg Wheelchair accessible facilities, PEEP

requirements, induction loop, chaperone requirements etc.

Building hire includes

FOH Staff, Stage Door, Show Crew and Technical staff can be

provided on request at additional cost.

Stage Door cover will be required if your tech team/company is

taxis home.

Next door to the Main House, TOM’s Bar provides

a secondary space for performances, events,

presentations and live music. This is available as a

supporting or standalone space, and can be set up to

Additionally or seperately, The Waterloo Room

adjoins TOM’s Bar and can be used for smaller

readings, workshops or as a break-out room.

There is no freely-available parking directly beside the venue.

There is however a dock by stage door for temporary loading.

The adjoining Waterloo Room provides a small, pleasant meeting space or quieter room during larger events.

Additionally, they can be used on their own; for performances [we have a semi-permanent stage in the corner of TOM’s Bar]; talks [using our pre-rigged projector and in-house PA]; meetings [the Waterloo Room is a light and pleasant space]; or gatherings of any kind.

// TOM’s bar: hot and cold drinksTOM’s Bar is fully stocked with draft beers, spirits and soft drinks. We’re also proud to offer a carefully-chosen wine list that is exclusive to TOM. If your audience has a particular tipple, we’ll happily order in something special too. Hot drinks - cappucinos, espressos, teas - are also served at the bar.Although TOM’s Bar has the capacity to serve large numbers of guests, if you’d prefer to have an additional bar in the Main House next door, we can arrange for another.

These caterers know our facilities well, but - more importantly - we know their food well and it is delicious. // The Old Market’s HistoryThe Old Market (originally less ‘old’ of course) began life in 1828 housing meat, fish, vegetables, sellers and buyers. It supplied the residential development of Brunswick town, which was originally independent from Brighton and Hove village. As Brighton and Hove have grown up around it, the building has catered for changing needs, operating as a stables, warehouse and more recently as an arts venue.In 2010 current owners Yes/No Productions bought and rennovated the building, fitting it out for gigs, theatre productions, events, performances and generally transformed The Old Market into TOM; a fantastically flexible cultural space.

There’s also NCP Parking slightly further East. A loading bay by our stage door makes it easy to drop off kit directly.
