About this document

This document summarises the outputs and initial observations from the Tombolo City Partner workshop on the 16th of June 2016.

What we need Your input and feedback is vital. Based on outputs from that session we have identified some opportunity areas which we wish to pursue further in collaboration with our city partners.

Workshop Objectives

• To get all our city partner’s together for the first time • To show you what we have been working on

throughout the project so far • To get feedback and input on the future direction of

the project

Summary of inputs

Exercise 01 We presented our progress on each city use case, and asked for your feedback.

Exercise 02 We introduced you to Tombolo Labs, and asked you to create your own experiment.

Use cases Exercise 01—

City Challenges

We have been working with each city partner to understand the challenge areas that Tombolo might be able to address with integrated modelling.

Use Cases We have identified key challenges relevant to each city, and begun exploring these use cases through available data and models. We presented our progress on each use case and asked for your feedback.

Obesity

In 2014, 24.3% of men were categorised as obese and 26.8% of women in the UK. Obesity is associated with a range of health problems including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The resulting NHS costs attributable to overweight and obesity are projected to reach £9.7 billion by 2050.

We want to understand the factors that may contribute to obesity in Milton Keynes.

Page 9: Tombolo Workshop Pack€¦About this document This document summarises the outputs and initial observations from the Tombolo City Partner workshop on the 16th of June 2016

Feedback observations

• Milton Keynes is atypical, and doesn’t follow the same patterns as other cities in the UK

• Motorised transport is a big challenge due to the Milton Keynes’ car culture

• The quality of accessibility could be investigated. (i.e to help understand why citizens are not using red-ways or public transport).

• Obesity needs to be understood at a more granular level. (e.g obesity data by LSOA)

Loneliness

Over 1 million older people in the UK say they are ‘always or often feel lonely’ and 12% of over 65’s say they feel ‘cut off from society’.

We want to help understand loneliness in Leeds, by identifying where lonely individuals may live.

Page 11: Tombolo Workshop Pack€¦About this document This document summarises the outputs and initial observations from the Tombolo City Partner workshop on the 16th of June 2016

Feedback observations

• Loneliness is difficult to measure due to subjective metrics.

• There are other loneliness investigations to consider and compare with. (e.g Leeds council have their own definition of social isolation, as well as Age UK).

• Loneliness can be measured in different ways. (e.g The Leeds Community Resilience Index uses alternative social isolation indicators).

• Having feet on the ground gathering insights is important to confirm model outputs

Access to services

Greenwich is experiencing a rapid population growth and has a number of ongoing/forthcoming large-scale development projects. New systems, such as the driverless car pilot, are also expected to supplement gaps in the current transport systems.

We want to understand how access to a range of services in Greenwich can be improved for those in need, to provide equal opportunities for citizens.

Page 13: Tombolo Workshop Pack€¦About this document This document summarises the outputs and initial observations from the Tombolo City Partner workshop on the 16th of June 2016

Feedback observations

• Accessibility can be investigated in different ways (e.g the quality of accessibility could also be considered, as some walking routes are not actually pedestrian friendly or often used).

• Services can be investigated in different ways. (e.g the quality of services could tell us whether the town centre is fit for purpose, or focussing on the local assets an area has, such as community hubs, rather than public service gaps).

• The data can sometimes be misleading. (e.g some areas in Greenwich, such as Thamesmead, appeared in our initial data analysis to be more connected than it actually this).

• The investigation could be extended to look at specific services (e.g access to ‘life services’ such as GPs and schools).

Opportunties • There was similarity amongst the cities, who share the same challenges

• All cities were interested in each use case being investigated for their own city

• Each use case can be investigated further to better understand the city challenge

• Our investigations could benefit from further input and data from our city partners and their teams

• Working closely with cities will enable us to sense check and get validation on our model outputs

Tombolo Experiments Exercise 02—

Tombolo Labs

We have been working on Tombolo prototypes that begin to explore the city challenges identified. These prototypes are browser based experiments, which showcase potential applications of the Tombolo software.

The Experiments An experiment is a hypothesis-led question that allows us to test ideas to see how Tombolo can help solve urban challenges. We presented an example of how an experiment allows you to combine models and play with outputs and then asked you to create your own.

When planning development, how can you ensure access to GPs?

The Milton Keynes team focussed on access to services, investigating the capacity and connectivity of GP’s in the local area.

The format of the experiment would be a heat map, visualising what demographic access looks like now and in the future. The team also discussed the ability to map development scenarios, testing in particular the impact of fewer but bigger GP surgeries on the local area. The outcome of the experiment would be used by the council planning team, as both a decision tool and a communication aid to open up dialog with the NHS.

Can we identify areas with poor access to One Stop Services?

The Leeds team focussed on access to services, investigating the supply and demand of one stop services (OSS) in the city.

The format of the experiment would be an interactive map, highlighting the catchment areas for each OSS and subsequent areas where additional services are required. The visualisation would also contain other contextual information about what services are available at each location. The outcomes of the experiment would be useful for council planners and service commissioners, especially if there was the ability to test different development scenarios of potential OSS.

How can we identify privately rented properties with health needs?

The Greenwich team focussed on better housing to support health, investigating the pattern of ownership and housing quality across the borough.

The format of the experiment would be spatially represented at building or street level. The visualisation would highlight areas with poor housing quality, and environmental hazards (e.g mould). The outcome of the experiment would be useful for both the public and the council; creating triggers to investigate problem areas. Additional information around the cost savings made from these early investigations could also be visualised and monitored.

Opportunities • The format of an experiment was highlighted as a useful communication tool, for both internal and public engagements

• The city partners saw the potential of Tombolo Labs as a platform they could use themselves to create their own experiments

• All of the experiments designed in the workshop are investigations we could potentially pursue further

What we need from you

• We’ll be in touch to arrange further meetings and engagements with you and your local experts, to find the best way to make project deliverables impactful for you and your teams

• Please share this document and raise awareness about the Tombolo project internally, and identify people those work could also benefit

• We’ll share the next steps which outline in more detail the action points needed to support the upcoming work plans
