Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide1) Maps for walking tour from Oranjestad port and bus routes, 2) Directories for malls, and 3) An islandtour with photos and maps. Aruba is a shopping paradise with duty-free pricing on international brand names. The gorgeous, white sandy beaches are north of the port in the upscale hotel-resort area. It's toofar to walk. Take a bus for ~ $ 2.30 cash USD or take a cab to the hotel/resort area beaches.

Aruba is a favorite vacation spot and a popularscuba diving destination. Unlike much of theCaribbean, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid,cactus-strewn landscape. Visitors can expectwarm, sunny weather. Year-round temperaturesrange from 76 to 91 F with ~ 77% relative humidityand low rainfall. Often, there is a gentle breezemaking it very comfortable.

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are referred to as theABC islands of Netherlands Antilles or the DutchAntilles. Aruba is 31 km (19 mi) long and 8.1 km(5 mi) wide located about 20 miles from Venezuela. It is generally flat with a few rolling hills. MountJamanota is the highest point at 188 meters (617 ft).

Visitors will be pleased to find Aruba is very clean, crime is very low, and there is almost no poverty. This is anexcellent place to spend a vacation, not just a day in port on a cruise ship.

The local currency is florin designated as Awg. The bank exchange rate is 1 USD = 1.77 Awg. U.S. Dollars arewidely accepted in Aruba. Businesses accept credit cards, but not personal checks.

Oranjestad Aruba Cruise Port

Oranjestad is the island of Aruba’s capital and its most important port. The port is tax-free and located about 25miles north of Venezuela. See http://www.arubaports.com/cruiseships/

The cruise port is 2.7 miles (4.4 km) from the airport. (map below)

Aruba-02-28-2013 Page 2 of 18 For more guides, see www.TomsPortGuides.com

Page 4: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

The map on the previous page shows details for the cruise port. Exit the port via the security gate. There is aTanzanite International on your right. Proceed to L.G. Smith Blvd and turn right. The bus station is across thestreet. The streets are lined with stores. The Royal Plaza Mall, Renaissance Mall, Renaissance/SeaportMarketplace, and Seaport Village Mall are only a short walking distance. Terminology is a bit confusing;Renaissance Marketplace and Seaport Marketplace are two names for the same location.

ShoppingAruba is a virtual nirvana for shoppers. You'll find a better selection of international brand names thananywhere else in the Caribbean or South America with prices 10% - 35% lower than in US. Aruba’s duty-freepricing ensures that shoppers don’t pay import duties or taxes because prices are set by the manufacturer. Anyadditional costs are absorbed by the retailer.

Royal Plaza Mall

From Tommy Hilfiger to Benetton, the Royal Plaza Mall is one of the most traditional shopping areas on theisland. Retailers specialize in jewelry, apparel, accessories, linens, perfumes, cigars and souvenirs. Stop herefor a bite or a cocktail; the harbor view is awesome. The mall has an escalator and elevator.

Renaissance Mall see http://www.shoprenaissancearuba.com/mall/index.php

Renaissance Mall offers exclusive international luxury retailers of jewelry, ready-to-wear, perfumes, shoes, accessories, beachwear and more. It has over 60 stores, cafés, restaurants, and entertainment.

Bus Route Map from Airport North

This is the northern section of the bus route map from the Reina Beatrix International Airport and cruise ship terminal to the hotels and beaches.

GPS Coordinates Throughout this port guide, I use GPS Coordinates to pinpoint the location of tourist sites. You probably won'tbe driving a car, but GPS has many benefits. The coordinates allow you to find the location of a site at any mapscale, whether you are using a street, terrain, satellite, or Google Earth map view. The “Get Directions” mapfunction allows you to determine travel distance and time by car, walking, or bicycle if there are public roadsand pathways between the sites.

GPS Coordinates to start to explore Aruba

Popular Tourist Sites – North of the Cruise Port

GPS coordinates are useful to locate sites on Google Maps and determine traveldistance and time. If you are staying at a hotel in Aruba, enter the street address forthe hotel in Google “Get Directions” and use coordinates for the tourist sites to plan atravel route. If you have a portable GPS device, you'll find these coordinates helpful.

If you're arriving on a ship, use these GPS coordinates for the cruise port securitygate as your starting point, N 12 31 13.70, W 70 2 29.49.

Open this port guide in one window on your computer and Google Maps in a secondwindow. Copy and paste the tourist site GPS coordinates into Google Maps.

California Lighthouse GPS coordinates = N 12 36 48.91, W 70 3 6.95

The stone lighthouse (photo at right) was named after the S.S. California, a woodensailing ship that sank near shore. There are sand dunes next to the lighthouse.Children enjoy sliding, “surfing” down the dunes in durable trousers.

The La Trattoria El Faro Blanco Restaurant is next to the lighthouse. It claims tooffer the best Italian cuisine in Aruba. See http://www.aruba-latrattoria.com/. Ourguide told us the evening views from this area are gorgeous.

Alto Vista Chapel GPS coordinates = N 12 34 33.43, W 70 0 40.42

The bright yellow chapel is at the end of a long, winding road lined by stations of thecross. This is the site of the first Catholic church built in Aruba in 1750. It's aspecial place for peace and contemplation with panoramic views of the countryside.

There is a labyrinth path in front of the chapel used by “pilgrims” as they pray andmeditate. Photos of the chapel below.

Bird Sanctuary, Butterfly Farm, & Dutch Windmill

These tourist sites are close to one another.

Bubali Bird Sanctuary GPS coordinates = N 12 33 23.11, W 70 3 15.65 It's a large wetland with a canal connecting to the sea. There is a tower for viewing birds and the area. Thiswebsite describes the bird sanctuary in detail http://arubabirds.com/aboutBirds/BubaliBirdSanctuary.htm

Aruba-02-28-2013 Page 9 of 18 For more guides, see www.TomsPortGuides.com

Page 11: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

Butterfly farm GPS coordinates = N 12 33 48.81, W 70 3 0.69. See http://www.thebutterflyfarm.com/This is a very popular tourist site.

Old Dutch windmill GPS coordinates = N 12 33 48.56, W 70 2 48.21 It was built in Holland in 1804. In 1929, it was damaged by a storm and rendered useless as a workingwindmill. In 1960, it was disassembled and moved to Aruba for use as a tourist attraction and restaurant. Seehttp://www.arubablog.net/arubas-old-dutch-windmill/

I entered the GPS coordinates for the Bird Sanctuary [A], Butterfly Farm [B], and Old Dutch Windmill [C] intoGoogle Maps “Get Directions” to create the map below. It is 1.6 km from point A to C. Note the bus stops onthe map. Use GPS coordinates to locate a tourist site, then increase the map scale to read details for that area.

Sonny Binns - Bus TourWe took a private ~ 3.5 hour bus tour with Sonny Binns. It was excellent and reasonably priced at $ 35 USD/ person. You book individual seats to join the tour. I highly recommend this tour. Sonny's contact email = [email protected] or 297-568-2028. He also does transfers, see http://www.sonnytoursaruba.com/

The tour begins at the ship and visits Casibari Rock Formations, Bushiribana Gold Smelter, Natural BridgeAndicuri Bay, Alto Vista Chapel, and California Lighthouse. Sonny dropped some people off at the beach-hotelarea, took us to the port, and went back to pick up those who wanted to visit the beach. Note that it takes mostof the day. You'll have some time to shop when you return to the port, but not a lot of time.

Casibari Rock Formations GPS coordinates = N 12 31 49.33, W 69 59 46.31

The rocks are not very high. It is easy to climb the stone steps at the front (photo below left) and there's awood stairway at the back. The top of the rock has a fence (photo below right).

You don't have to climb the rocks. Walk the paths to enjoy the views of unusual rock formations, cactus, andflowers in bloom. (photos below)

NOTE: There is a small bar/cafe at Casibari Rock Formation. They charge 50 cents to use the toilet. This is common forthe toilets at businesses near tourist sites.

Aruba-02-28-2013 Page 11 of 18 For more guides, see www.TomsPortGuides.com

Page 13: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

View of Hooiberg Mountain from the Top of Casibari Rock (photo below)

Aruba is a flat island with a few small hills the locals call “mountains”. This photo is taken from the top ofCasibari Rock, looking west. You can also see ships at the dock if you turn and face north.

Hooiberg (Dutch for haystack) Mountain Peak GPS coordinates = N 12 31 2, W 69 59 41 It's Aruba's most prominent natural landmark after the Natural Bridge. At 168 meters/551 feet, Hooiberg is the4th highest point on the island. There are stairs to the top. It's like climbing to the top of a 55 story building!

Ayo Rock Formation GPS coordinates = N 12 31.917, W 69 58.331

This rock formation is similar, but not as nice as the Casibari Rock Formation. We did not stop at Ayo.

Bushiribana Gold Smelter GPS coordinates = N 12 33 12.38, W 69 58 32.63

There is NO gold at this site; don't bother digging. In 1825, the Aruba Gold Mining company built this smelterto extract gold from ore. There is not much to see except stone ruins of an old building. Tours make a photostop here because it is on the way to the Natural Bridge.

Aruba-02-28-2013 Page 12 of 18 For more guides, see www.TomsPortGuides.com

Page 14: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

The Bushiribana Smelter (photo below)

Natural Bridge Andicuri Bay GPS coordinates = N 12 32 28.42, W 69 57 29.53

The northwest side of Aruba island has beautiful white sandy beaches and “high end” hotels. The east side ofthe island has a rugged, rocky coast with waves crashing against the rocks. Waves created the Natural Bridgeby sculpting the limestone. This is a gorgeous area, well worth a visit. The “original” Natural Bridge hascollapsed. Remains of the bridge are at the right in the photo below where the waves are crashing.

The “Baby” Natural Bridge Remains, But It Is Unsafe for Pedestrians. (photo below)

Rock formations along the shore are amazing. (photo below)

Tourist Sites Along Eastern Shore (map below)

I entered GPS coordinates for the Gold Smelter, Natural Bridge, Natural Pool, and Boca Prins into “Get Directions” on a Google Terrain map. Google cannot plot a route if it can't find public roads. There are no public roads connecting these sites. There are dirt roads, trails, and “unknown” roads. Note that Hooiberg Mountain appears as a small raised section on this map.

Natural Pool GPS coordinates = N 12 31 28, W 69 55 42

The Natural Pool or "conchi" called "Cura di Tortuga" is a secret, hidden pool on the windward coastsurrounded by rocks and is a perfect getaway for a moment of total relaxation. The pool is surrounded by someof Aruba’s most rugged terrain, so visitors truly get the feeling of having "discovered" something when theireyes focus on the site. Diving from the rock cliffs into the protected pool of ocean water is the main reason somany venture here, off the beaten path.

Boca Prins Sand Dunes GPS coordinates = N 12 29.760, W 69 54.397

Arikok National Park, Aruba’s peerless ecological preserve, protects approximately 18% of the island—unique rock outcrops, caves, and bays create microclimates that support wildlife found only in Aruba. Within the park’sboundaries, you will find the Aruban parakeet, Aruban whiptail lizard or Kododo blauw, Aruban rattlesnake or Cascabel, Aruban cat-eyed snake, and the Aruban burrowing owl. You might also see donkeys, iguana, and goats grazing the hillsides.

Aruba-02-28-2013 Page 15 of 18 For more guides, see www.TomsPortGuides.com

Page 17: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

Adventurous travelers who make their way toArikok will most likely be drawn to thelimestone cliffs and sand dunes that beautifythe coast. Boca Prins is one such exampleand it is easily explored on foot.

The trail head, located just off the main parkroad, has ample parking with the dunes andcoast immediately visible. Follow the markedpath towards the pounding waves. A sandypath bordered by rocks soon leads to awooden staircase that allows access to a bay,or boca. Descend the steps to the sandy inlet.A sign warns of the dangers ahead—turbulentcrashing waves within the bay makeswimming or getting near the waterhazardous.

See http://www.naturalbornhikers.com/trails/bocaprins.htmlFor photos, see http://www.panoramio.com/photo/3626158

The GPS coordinates are for the Boca Prins restaurant next to the sand dunes. Google displays the GPS location as a down pointing green arrow. The red balloon shows the nearest street address.

Caves (map right)The Fontein Cave is just south of Boca PrinsSand Dunes. There are many caves in this area. These are natural caves with NO electriclighting. Some of the pathways are difficult, and many of the caves are filled with bats.

For an excellent description of the caves, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caves_of_Aruba

Fontein Caves GPS coordinates = N 12 29.630, W 69 54.399 In the deep recesses of rock along the island'swindward coast, shallow cave formationsintrigue visitors, who, in seeking to penetrate itsdamp chambers, are rewarded with mysteriousviews of rock drawings, the sudden, flappingwings of a nervous bat, and nature's artwork ofstalagmites and stalactites. The Fontein Cave isthe most popular of the caves as it is the onlyone that has the drawings of Arawak Indians onthe ceilings, providing a real sense of islandhistory to this cave.

Page 18: Toms Aruba Cruise Port Guide

Guadirikiri Caves GPS coordinates = N 12 28.904, W 69 53.898

The Guadirikiri Cave is famous for its two chambers, illuminated by the sunlight streaming through holes inthe roof. The cave extends for about 100 feet. In the darker portions, there are hundreds of harmless bats.

The Huliba Cave is also known as the Tunnel of Love. There are multiple entrances.GPS Coordinates = N 12 28.362, W 69 53.794 N 12 28.309, W 69 53.834 N 12 27.972, W 69 53.849

The Huliba Cave is nicknamed the "Tunnel of Love" for its heart-shaped entrance. The entrance is through asteep and narrow stairway which dips into the cave. It has five entrances. At places, one has to crouch to seethe formations. Flashlights are needed to explore the 300 feet (91 m) long passageway, as it is totally darkinside the cave. The cave is studded with stalagmitesand stalactites formations in limestone rocks. Twobat species reside in this cave.

Lourdes Grotto (map right)GPS coordinates = 12 27.019, W 69 54.362

The grotto is a Roman Catholic shrine built into therocks in Seroe Preto (black hill) near San Nicolas. The Lourdes Grotto, named in commemoration ofthe famous French religious landmark, was createdunder the guidance of a priest named "Erkamp". Astatue of the Virgin Mary, weighing 700 kilos, washoisted into place in the grotto. On February 11(feast of Lady of Lourdes), a procession leaves fromthe St. Theresita church in San Nicolas to the grotto, where a mass is performed.

User Feedback Is Welcome GoalMy guides are designed to help you plan a great cruise vacation by providing information such as where the ship docks, location of tourist sites, public transit, walking tour maps, things to see and do, travel issues unique to the port, etc. Knowledge of ports is important when planning shore excursions because you have to make many decisions and commitments long before your ship docks. I believe the information in this guide is accurate, however you are responsible to verify accuracy of the information that you use to plan your vacation.

Information on cruise ports frequently changes such as bus routes, admission fees to sites, rental car locations, etc. Cruise Critic is the best source for up-to-date, detailed information on travel details for shore excursions, reviews of cruise ships, etc. There are many knowledgeable people on Cruise Critic who are willing to share their expertise and travel experience. I highly recommend www.CruiseCritic.com; it's free to join.

Why feedback is importantUser feedback helps me make corrections and improve the format and content in my quest to produce the“ultimate” port guides. I welcome offers to collaborate with me or provide materials for use in my guides.

PLEASE Help “spread the word” about my websiteThe only negative feedback I get is, “I wish I knew about your port guides before my vacation”. Please tellyour friends and post a reference to my guides and website on the blogs. To receive email notification whennew guides are available, send your email address to me at [email protected]
