October Wellbeing Report from Sara Janssen – Student Welfare Officer  Student wellbeing – You Can Do It! Term 4 focus – Resilience Our whole school focus for Term 4 is resilience. Resilience underpins the other themes we have worked on this year – ge ng along, being organised, showing persistence and feeling confident.  Mrs Purvis spoke with the students about resilience and emo ons on Wednesday. They looked at  pictures of different emo ons and talked about when they have felt that way, e.g. “I felt sad during the movie Red Dog”. Mrs Purvis emphasised the idea that all emo ons are ok, but it is what we do with those feelings that is important. They also discussed what we can do to make ourselves feel happier when we feel sad or angry, rather than just sit there and feel bad. Students suggested that they find a friend to play with, have a good cry then get up and do something else, listen to music, find a quiet space for yourself, ride your bike or even ask mum or dad for a “great big hug”.  Students then put their resilience into ac on. The senior  students taught the Prep/1 students to do a bush dance – the “Heel and Toe Polka”. Some students felt shy or nervous, but with encouragement they all joined in the dance and worked  together successfully. Students showed resilience and worked to achieve something  together.

According to the You Can Do It! program, resilience means  not ge ng angry, worried or down,  calming down when you do get very upset, not figh ng or staying away from  people when you are very  upset, and bounding back to work or play a er a set‐back.

Habits of Mind (ways to think) to help us be resilient. It’s not as bad as I think it is I can stand it Accep ng myself, and remembering all the good things about me Taking risks, it is ok to make mistakes when I am learning new things Being independent, and not worrying about what other people want me to do I Can Do It, thinking I’m more likely to be successful than to fail

Pu ng resilience into prac ce: Somers Camp Four of our senior students are at Somers Camp this week. We know they will have fun, even though ini ally there will be nerves and perhaps even a few tears. These students will be able to put their  resilience into prac ce, using what they have learnt at school and at home. Young people need  confidence and strength to take risks – like going to camp and mee ng new people, or a emp ng a new topic of work – so that they can move into secondary school and into the world outside school. I am  really looking forward to hearing about their experiences when these four students return to school next week. I expect that they’ll show great resilience!
