Top 10 Green Tips for Businesses August 2011 Jennifer Lopez, country head of ACCA in Malaysia, once mentioned the need for higher standards of carbon accounting and disclosure. She linked her reasoning to UN’s 2006 data which stated Malaysia’s carbon emissions stands at 7.2 tonnes per capita; representing one of the world’s highest per capita. While she might have a legitimate point of view, her call for better standards of carbon accounting does not directly contribute to greener practices. At the end of the day, the big words ‘climate change’ and ‘reducing carbon emissions’ boils down to small, simple steps of being environmentally conscious. Below are ten helpful steps to being greener which can be implemented instantaneously: Shut down and unplug your PC when not in use It is a known fact that shutting down your PC saves more power than merely putting it in standby mood. Did you also know a PC which has been shut down will still consume a small amount of power? This happens if it is still plugged into a socket. To save energy consumption (and cut your electric bill), it would be ideal to unplug all appliances while not in use. If this sounds too troublesome, consider using a power extension strip to disconnect many appliances in just one move. Use the PDF function We live in a progressive generation- most smart phones these days are equipped with a document reader which is fully compatible with the PDF file type. Thus, as an alternative to printing copies of articles or journals to be read on-the-go, consider saving the document into your phone instead. Start a recycle bin This is probably the first step any office should undergo in the process of becoming greener. The recycle bin does not have to be a fancy 3-color yellow-blue-green bin; just a simple box to contain non-confidential papers which can be recycled would suffice. Start a re-useable printing tray Possibly the easiest way to practice green printing habits is to set aside a tray in your office’s printing machine specially for re-using the blank side of a printed page. My office simply sticks a label on a tray with instructions on how to load the re-useable papers. Cut printing wastage
