These residents, friends and sailors formed Lahaina Yacht Club at a Spring meeting in the old Anchor Cove on Front Street. In 1965 the board consisted of Bob Hoehn (Commodore), Floyd Christensen (Vice Commodore), Jack Ackerman and Jerry MacDonald (Rear Commodores), Jim Greenan & John Lawson (later Rear Commodores), Dick Fairservice (Port Captain) and Carolynn Fairservice (Secretary/Treasurer). The burgee was designed by Sam Kaai who won the burgee contest, a white whale in a red field, Lahaina’s traditional colors. LYC was incorporated as a non-profit club on June 21, 1965. We are off to a great start! Opening day on the last Sunday of March was a huge success and thanks to our new Port Captain Crissy, we never ran out of food or beverages, and we even had a DJ for entertainment. Thank you to all the volunteers that showed up early to make this happen, some as early as 6am to tape off the area. Our Junior sailors were showing their skills and taking members out on the Fevas. What a great day!

Talking about Junior Sailors, they did great again competing against Hawaii Kai in February. We sure have some real sailors in the club. Also, one of our juniors (Kane) competed at nationals in Miami; he took 9th overall. Congratulations Kane! As part of an expansion of Vic Maui to further build the relationship between the two clubs, we are trying to get the two junior sailing teams from both clubs to compete and hope to see Royal Vancouver Yacht Club next year sailing in warm waters. We hope this will be a yearly event with one year in Vancouver, BC and one year in Lahaina.

A lot of changes have happened over the past 6 months and the most successful was to make Sunday a family day where the Club serves food and all families are free to enjoy the facilities. Another change has been opening on major holidays. Easter brunch was fantastic thanks to chef Ken and his staff.

Please check our website for upcoming events as we have a busy year planned. The 50th anniversary on June 20 is one of the biggest events! We have secured JD and Harry for music so please come join us for dinner, cocktails and fun at the Sheraton lawn.

See you in the club or on the water.May your boat be leak free.May your sails be in good repair, and your engine start.May the winds be fair, the weather kind. May your days be fi lled with the exquisite pleasure of new adventures, fabulous destinations and excellent friendship.

Aloha All,

What does The Lahaina Yacht Club have in common with the Pillsbury Doughboy, Charlie Sheen, the bands The Who and The Grateful Dead, the movies Sound of Music and Beach Blanket Bingo and our nation’s Medicare and Medicaid programs? Well in 2015, they all have been around for 50 years. Turning 50......it’s a big deal. Many of us (like me) may have put that milestone astern but trust me, I do remember my 50th vividly. 50 is a pretty cool number in my opinion.

Fifty years ago our Club’s founding fathers envi-sioned a place where individuals who have a love for all things ocean could gather in friendship and comradery. It was to be a Club that perpetuated boating and ocean activities and would also pro-vide a highly social and fun environment for its members. I’d like to think that we have been do-ing a pretty good job over these 50 years of keeping that legacy going and hope that we have continued to steer our course in the direction that our found-ing fathers and charter members can be proud of.

So whether you have hit 50 or not, you do have a great opportunity as an LYC Member to celebrate The La-haina Yacht Club’s 50th Anniversary! What kind of things are happening for members to join in the cel-ebration of our 50th Anniversary? Well for starters there are both men’s and women’s aloha shirts and golf shirts along with Tervis tumblers sporting our commemorative 50th Anniversary LYC logos avail-able for sale. There will a fantastic coffee table book (coming soon) with 50 years of photos and memo-ries from LYC, and of course the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner ocean front at The Sheraton Maui on June 20th so get your tickets now before it sells out.

By the way, LYC has also set up special room rates at the Hotel for our members over that weekend so

see the LYC website for details on how to get your tickets and book hotel rooms for the event and make it your LYC 50th party “Staycation”!

Hope you have a chance to take advantage of the various opportunities for The Lahaina Yacht Club’s 50th year celebration. As I said earlier, I think 50 is a great number; I mean when else can I talk about Charlie Sheen and LYC in the same sentence?

Aloha and see you on the water or in the Club!

Mike Masterson

2015 RACE SCHEDULE

RC SAILIan Ponting

The season has started! Opening day was a blast as usual. The kids sailed the RS Fevas up to introduce club members to the fun of the-ses great boats. This year the wind cooperated and several people were introduced to the boats.

The Spring Series is in the can and all the boats showed flashes of brilliance. The series got off to a solid start on February 28th. The North winds rumbled down the channel and kept the sailors and RC on their toes with zero to 20 on the course. Event #2 was again in-fluenced by North wind and the boats raced outside the mooring field. #3 was off Puamana and featured some of the tightest racing in the past few years!

Unfortunately we did not get the first dinghy event off due to some logistic issues, but its a long sea-son! We did get some visiting sailors from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club who hopped in a Feva and chased our teams around the course at Mala. Nice to have the added competition!

Speaking of Competition the 3rd Annual Dinsmoor is in the works for August 22-23. The NOR is published and the sailors are frothing. The earlier schedule will ease some conflicts and allow better participation.

Sailing continues to grow with the LYC. There are more and more opportuni-ties to get on the water for all ages.

Aloha,Ian

Congrats to the Sacred Hearts kids for completing their sailing program at LYC! Mahalo to their Teacher, Fleet Captain and Volunteers for their time and efforts!

Chuck and Julie Dicker Regular Member

Chuck and Julie married in 1992 at Alexandra Morrow’s home on Front St. They had met on a blind date. Chuck comes from northern Illinois,

one of six children, and grew up an avid sports fan. Not surprisingly his favorite teams remain the Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls. In keeping with his love of sports Chuck chaired the Jackpot in the early 90’s, Julie run-ning the banquet. Always a strong volunteer Chuck also did back to back stints on our Board of Governors as RC Power and Port Captain. Together, they’re known for their “Dicker’s Pickles” which are a scrumptious product they often showcase at our events. They are grown and canned at home-they do a bang up job at the holidays including the shipping. The beautiful gift baskets are a sight to behold! They both have served on the Nomi-nation Committee at LYC and have the best Vic-Maui greeting parties. Chuck has served as “Head Greeter” and may yet do it again at this time consuming and popular event. As a young adult Chuck moved to North-ern California, (the Bay Area) to work at Kinko’s, later managing his own store in Palo Alto. Later he hooked up with Kinko’s in Oahu and then moved to Maui. He has been in the printing business for over thirty years and still does our newsletter. Julie hails from a Yugo-slavian family who had settled in Southern California. She matriculated at Loyola-Marymont and graduated with degrees in electrical engineering and math. Later she was employed by Hughes Aircraft and worked on two space shuttle missions. She moved to Maui to teach at Lahainaluna and is now Head of the Math Depart-ment-consequently she knows many of your children! She says she married Chuck because he is “...funny, car-ing and entertaining”. As a consummate hostess she is defi nitely part of this dynamic duo. They keep in touch visiting many of the members they have sponsored over the years. This is a couple who is omnipresent at LYC and has devoted a great deal of time and energy to our club. From auctioneering to general assistance helping at our event they never turn down a request for work hours and they do it with enthusiasm and a smile.

RC POWER Mike Byrnes

Aloha,

Welcome to Spring everyone! It has been a rough winter for all who have been on the ocean. We welcome the new season with the beginning of fi shing season. Coming up on May 30th is the Spring Wahine Fishing Tournament! First is our own “Mixer” on April 12, which is an opportunity for the ladies who want to fi sh to meet the fi sher-men who may have boats to support them. Post-ers have been placed in areas and businesses that may attract the likes of both. LYC is trying to bring back the attraction of the Wahine Tournament that in the past has been such a fun fi lled event! Last year we only had 6 boats involved. The ladies still had a great time, but with a lot more publicity we are hoping for a much greater turn out. This is a tournament for the ladies to go on a boat and be the ones who bring in the catch. Maybe it will be a huge pacifi c blue marlin? We will have prizes for the 3 biggest fi sh! Chances are good that you could be the one to win a fi shing tournament!

Ladies, go round up your girlfriends and fi nd some-one who has a boat and get in this event! The entry is $200 per boat and up to (4) anglers. Each ad-ditional angler $50. If we have just 10 boats the prize will be $2000, not a bad day of fi shing and getting a great Maui tan! If it goes as well as we hope, we will have another one in the fall on Oct. 30, the day before the Lahaina Jackpot Tournament.

Come on out and make Maui and LYC proud of our Wahine fi sherwomen!

LAHAINA YACHT CLUB CELEBRATES 50 YEARS ON JUNE 20, 2015

Join us to celebrate 50 years of the Lahaina Yacht Club under the stars at the beautiful Sheraton Maui on the world famous Ka’anapali Beach. Dinner, dancing and no host bar between 5PM - 10PM Saturday, June 20, 2015. Be a part of this historic event! Tables may be reserved for 10 guests. Please email [email protected] with ALL names. Ticket Sales close June 16th at noon. No tickets sales at the door. Details online: www.lyc.us.

We will revisit the history of the club with old photos, Tale of the Whale Archives and other memorbillia. If the walls could talk there would be some great stories! Pay tribute to the 27 Charter Members, ocean-racing and cruising yachtsmen who sailed to Lahaina and made it their home port.

The photo was provided by Alex Smith. His dad was involved with LYC. As we still learn the history and faces in the photograph we have been able to identify Charter Members Floyd Christensen who is holding the whale plaque and John Law-son to the right of Floyd in the back row.
