Aloha All,

Our Labor Day event was fantastic thanks to John Pope, Chef Ken and Skeeter. This year our LYC softball team got “creamed” by the Thundercocks, a well-deserved win yet I hope we can win the trophy back next year.

The Dinsmoor Trophy event where junior sailors compete against Oahu teams is getting enormous; I was told this was the biggest sailing event ever in Maui County. Fur-thermore several of our junior sailors took places with Kai Ponting and Sophia Marchesi taking first overall. Sev-eral of the Oahu juniors are competing in the nationals, so this is an amazing accomplishment for our sailors. Congratulations to all the sailors.

The golf weekend had all teams filled and lots of fun. The main beneficiary was Hospice Maui. Thanks to all the volunteers for making this a great weekend.

With this being the end of the season we only have two major events remaining: Jackpot/Halloween fishing tour-nament and the Keiki fishing tournament. Please check our calendar and get involved either as participants or vol-unteers.

The LYC Sailing Championship will be decided on No-vember 22nd with a two event regatta and the Lasers will be out for their Final on the 15th of November.

We are already in preparation for elections, so please check calendar and turn up for election day/general mem-bership meeting. Your voice counts, but if you don’t speak up it won’t. See you Sunday, December 7th with a gen-eral membership meeting being called to order at 10am, ballot open and election results after 3pm.

I will be running for a third term as Commodore as I feel I still have more to accomplish, whether I get reelected or not, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the pres-ent Board of Governors as well as the staff for working with me and getting us where we are today! Remember it takes a team not just one person.

With all of this being said, I am excited about 2015 and all the plans we have for our 50th anniversary. I will not reveal too much at this time, but can assure you all you will be pleasantly surprised.

Aloha:

At the end of October we will be having the Jackpot Fishing Tournament that makes for a double-header day of fishing. We hope that all fishermen have reg-istered for both tournaments to win the grand prize of biggest fish takes all the money!

A big thanks to Steve Clark for spearheading the event and all the businesses that have generously contrib-uted to make these two separate tournaments. If all goes well this year, then we may keep with the same program. Let us know your thoughts after the tourna-ment to give us an idea to plan for next year.

Any fishermen who still want to sign up, the captain’s meeting is Wednesday (10.29) and Thursday (10.30) at the Club for Jackpot from Noon - 4:00PM. Manda-tory Captains meeting for jackpot begins at 4:00PM at LYC on Thursday October 30th.

This year our Keiki Fishing tournament On Novem-ber 16, will be held from 9:00AM – Noon at Lahaina Harbor. Bamboo Poles, Bait and bucket are provid-ed. After fishing the kids will enjoy lunch as well as prizes. Thanks to all the contributors to make another successful year for our keiki! A BIG Mahalo to John Domingo and Norval Ayres for 16 years of leading the tournament. That’s 6,000+ bamboo-fishing poles that needed to be tied, weighted and hooked! Scott Pear-son and I are honored to learn from the masters, and look forward to having the same success as they did.

Good Luck to the fishermen.

I have enjoyed learning the tasks of the RC Power and look forward to putting my name in the election for the 2015 Board of Governors!

Sincerely, Mike Byres

It has been a great year for the LYC sailing programs! We have seen enthusiasm in everything form the Big Boats to the beginning sailing programs.

Vic Maui continues to be a highlight for Hawaii Sail-ing. The boats arrived (mostly) safe and sound with happy crews and happier greeting parties. The events surrounding the actual sailing were well run and fun for all. Planning is underway for the next event!

Our Big Boat races have been well attended. Our new program of cooperation with MBYC has opened the possibilities for the racers. In November we will have the championship series for both clubs with bragging rights on the line!

The Dinsmoor Regatta has evolved into the premier Junior Sailing regatta in Hawaii. It was a real team ef-fort to get the event to the level it is! Big props to all who jumped in to make it happen! The kids were the stars. Our LYC kids have shown great improvement and kept quite a bit of hardware here on Maui!

Speaking of JR Sailing, the program has grown to the extent that we have moved several boats back up to Mala for the advanced sailors. The venue offers next level sailing and will complement the beginner pro-grams that will be run out of the club. We have several schools lined up to introduce kids to sailing and the LYC and the Summer program is already being talked about.

I will be running for RC Sail once again and hope to continue the momentum that the LYC sailing programs have developed. See you on the water!

Aloha,Ian Ponting

BOOMVANGERS CORNERShannon Fields

Aloha,

As we enter the fall season, the Boomvanger Ladies pre-pare for our busy time of the year. The Boomvanger La-dies assisted with the second annual Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta. We had a great time registering the sailors and assisting where ever needed especially at the youth only social. We look forward to participating next year.

As many of you know Boomvangers award scholarships to many deserving young adults of Lahaina. This fall Boomvangers plan to participate in Keiki College & Ca-reer Night hosted by Sacred Hearts School here in Lahai-na. Last fall Boomvangers awarded a $500 scholarship to a deserving youth in the community. This scholarship is different as it will provide the families with a “jump start” on the dream of attending college. We are thrilled to be a part of the wonderful opportunity.

The third annual Boomvnagers’ Holiday Gift Show will take place on November 16th at Lahaina Yacht Club (2pm-4pm). In addition to many of our favorite vendors returning, we will have some new and exciting locally made goods. This is a great event to make new friends, support local vendors and do some Christmas shopping all at one place. So mark your calendar and we will see you at the Club!

Boomvangers continue to give to our community through our Keiki Christmas Program. This year will be no dif-ferent and we cannot do it alone. We are so grateful to the many generous donations made to us. You really do make a difference in the life our youth. Be on the lookout for the Giving Tree at the beginning of December.

It is time for the Boomvangers traditional winter activity of whale watching cruises. Dates will be posted in the near future. If you would like to assist with any planning or volunteering please join us at our meeting held the first Tuesday of every month at the club.

Have a wonderful fall and thank you kindly for the sup-port over the years.

A Hui Hou!

Glade Feike - Regular Member Glade is an omnipresent and active mem-ber of LYC. She is always present at our event-parties, usually with a group of 14+! A very lovely lady Glade was born in Idaho and spent much of her married life in Northern California. Starting out with

the USO in Los Angeles she and her husbandEarl(now passed)moved to Maui and became very involved in our club activities,.Earl, a handsome gentleman was often known as the “Marlboro Man, As a career home-maker she was a motivating force in P.E.O., a sister-hood dedicated to furthering education in young girls and the Children’s Home Society. She continued her spirit of volunteerism with a special fondness for Vic Maui and she has been a”folder and flapper” for twenty years. Now residing in Honokawai, she is the mother of two and a strong supporter of daughter Kathi’s craft/jewelry business ”Zelda’s Zori’s” (named for her fam-ily nickname). Glade is often seen lunching at LYC, doing water aerobics and indulging in her artistic en-deavors-she dances hula, paints, and plays a plethora of instruments including the ukulele, piano and organ.Always her gracious and charming self I don’t think I have ever met a more beautiful person(think Loretta Young!). the camaraderie and generosity one can come to ex-pect from those in the hospitality industry. As purvey-ors of casual dining , spirits and catering they fit right in and love LYC and in fact their youngest daughter who recently married in Maui held her reception din-ner at the club. Great menu, venue and party! Walt and Roxanne originally came to LYC via guest passes from Ken and Martin Stevenson. Later, sponsored by Chuck Dicker, they have become the poster children of guest cards. Does anyone participate more in this great little membership perk? GALLEYChef Ken

The month of August was a “love in the air” kind of month with a total of four large wed-ding parties. Congrats to all the newlyweds!

We started September with an unfortunate loss to the Thunder Cocks. The food was a grand slam, at the softball field and at LYC. The middle of the month we hosted the Dinsmoor Trophy a two day sailing event for junior sailors from Hawaii Kai and LYC. The club hosted a pupu party on Saturday night of the race for the parents and juniors. I surprised ev-eryone with a nacho cheese fountain, with lots of fun dipping foods. The kids had a “Juniors only” party on the upper deck with cotton candy, pop-corn, music, glow sticks and an ice cream sundae bar. Big Mahalos to everyone that made it happen.

The big event in September was the “Night un-der the Burgees” a four course wine paired din-ner. The reviews on the food was all positive and some members even tried new things (Pork) for the first time and loved it! A huge thanks to everyone that helped make it a great success.

Next few large event are Oktoberfest Oct. 22nd, Halloween Oct. 31st and member Christ-mas party is 12/13/14. Remember to get your reservations in early cause the special event nights fill up quick. As a friendly remind-er Holiday season is around the corner, and dates for your Christmas parties are filling up.

TIP FROM THE GALLEY:

Keeping Cheese Fresh - After you open any cheese, wrap it in wax paper before re-turning to a plastic wrapper or Ziploc. Cheese that normally would only last about a week will now stay fresh longer month.

...We found out Thursday afternoon that fifteen-foot waves were expected to be breaking over the reef at Fran’s all weekend. Plan B kicked in. We moved all the boats to the Mala shed and would run the re-gatta in the area between Mala and the Hyatt hotel.

Saturday morning was scramble time. Stacie Thorlak-son had worked her magic, which allowed the container holding all of the Hawaii Kai boats to be placed next to the canoe hale at 505 Front Street. This would be ideal if we were at Fran’s but at the wrong end of town for Mala.

The trucks were rallied, the boats loaded, and there was an instant small boat parade through Lahaina town.

At Mala there was controlled chaos. Boats were rigged, the skipper’s meeting was held, boats were launched and the regatta was finally under way.

Saturday turned out to be a great day to sail. The wind was just right and the kids got in five solid rac-es. Everyone came in with smiles on their faces.

Last year’s Saturday night event saw the kids gravitat-ing to the second deck to get away from the parents and discuss sailing skills, tactics and boat tuning. Seeing an opportunity to provide a real party for the sailors, Sophia and Gracie Marchesi petitioned the Board to hold one. Their presentation was so good that a number of Board members asked if they could attend the kid’s party.

Crissy Marchesi and Diane Sowers handled party plan-ning. With assistance from Tracy McIntyre, Jannette Knowley, Shannon Fields, Susie Peck, Helena Von Sy-dow and Chef Ken, they decorated the space and set up food, ice cream and cotton candy stations. It was a great event for both the kids and the adults that snuck upstairs to snitch some ice cream. The main deck event was also a great event. Chef Ken and his crew did their usual stellar job in providing a great party.Back at Mala on Sunday we saw the wind build-ing and the sea sending in some bigger waves. Ev-eryone launched to a second day of five races. By

the time the forth race went off we were seeing nuclear winds. The Bics were sent in, which left the course to the hot rod FEVAs for the last race.

Recovering the boats became a challenge with the waves hitting the beach. Sailors and parents all jumped in and got the sailors and boats in safely.

Trophies were presented by Keith Dinsmoor, the name sake of the Dinsmoor Trophy Regat-ta. The Lahaina YC team had a good showing. Bringing home metal for LYC were:

The RRS book had to be busted out and Rule A8 en-acted to determine first place in the FEVA class. Pon-ting/Marchesi had five first place races. The second place boat had three.

With the lowest points total for the regatta, Kai Ponting and Sophia Marchesi were awarded the Keith Dinsmoor Junior Sailing Regatta perpetu-al trophy. Congratulations to Kai and Sophia and to everyone that sailed and supported the regatta.

A Hui Hou!

the USO in Los Angeles she and her husbandEarl(now passed)moved to Maui and became very involved in our club activities,.Earl, a handsome gentleman was often known as the “Marlboro Man, As a career home-maker she was a motivating force in P.E.O., a sister-hood dedicated to furthering education in young girls and the Children’s Home Society. She loves to wear blue-it enhances her corn-flower eyes.

the camaraderie and generosity one can come to ex-pect from those in the hospitality industry.

DINSMOOR TROPHY REGATTA2nd Annual Inter-Island Junior Sailing Regatta

The Lahaina YC held the second annual Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta on September 13 – 14. A lot of club members and staff spent considerable time in preparing and delivering what turned out to be one of the best regattas ever seen on Maui. Many mahalos to Ian Ponting, Kea Ho, Fran Hinton, Tracy McIntyre, Diane Sowers, Crissy Marchesi, Jannette Knowley, Shannon Fields, Trish Link, Curtis Robb, Phil Link, Keith Dinsmoor, Chef Ken, Stacie Thorlakson, Ben Bland, Mike Atkinson, Bill Lewis, Phil Sneed, Dave Atkinson, Lars Bertelsen, John Pope, and everyone else that helped make this event happen. Thursday morning found us moving the boats to Fran Hinton’s back yard. Fran is very gracious in allowing us to use her place for our base of operations. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. . . Story continues on page 6
