Ubuntu and Linux Mint will always be the top dogs but one mustn’t overlook distributions that have shown great potential. Let’s quickly dig into Linux distributions picks for 2016.

VeltOSVeltOS developed by Velt technologies is entirely a community driven project. VeltOS is giving the control authority to users to shape up the OS in the way they want it to be. You can decide how the operating system will feel, act, look etc. Is is entirely built by you in open source spirit. VOS is very young and is different as you are the visionair with other users of the community. VOS is created off Arch Linux as it is lightweight and is known for its simplicity, versatility and cutting edge software. Arch offers its own software through the Package Manager and Pacman and because of its rolling release nature, one can always avail the latest software packages and security updates.

PapyrOSPreviously known as QuartzOS and later on QuantumOS, PapyrOS rotates around an operating system which is material designed with an arch base. It is based on the idea of an operating system which is meant for normal human. PapyrOS is quite simple, desktop environment is designed in an eye candy material with an Arch base taking user-friendliness to another level in the world of Linux. PapyrOS will offer integration with all web services that includes Gmail, Evernote, and Inbox to make your desktop experience much better.This is also an open source project and the code is available on GitHub.

KororaKorora is an already established distribution which was originally developed in 2005 named as Gentoo Linux which was reborn in the year 2010 by the name of Fedora with some tweaks and other changes. The main objective was to make the usability direct without the requirement of post configuration after the system is installed in order to make your system functioning outside the box. Korora is created off Fedora and is different as it provides third party repositories by which you can easily avail applications. Korora is strongly related with fedora as default repositories of the latter is used for updating its core system. Another objective is to promisingly increase the user base of Fedora however providing great technology. Korora is available in different variants namely Gnome, KDE, XFCE, and Mate which share the same base. Korora is an open source project.

The Solus project was initially started as SolusOS based on Debian after that the developers thrashed it and started another SolusOS (Solus OS 2) which is the precursor to all current work which was built from scratch after that the project was closed down. The desktop has been revamped as per Ikey Doherty. SOS uses PiSi package manager as well as eopkg which are not like pacman and apt-get commands.
