Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city of Brazil and is noted for its spectacular natural setting, Carnival celebrations, amazing beaches, and Maracana which is one of the world’s largest football stadiums. The city is vibrant, colorful and is filled with stunning architecture, museums, and marvelous food. Here is a list of 10 amazing tourist attractions which should not be missed on Rio trip starting with number 10.

Introduction

The Statue of Christ the Redeemer is the main attraction as well as sometime the sole reason of visiting the city of Rio De Janeiro which makes it the number one attraction on this list. The statue of Jesus known as Cristo Redentor in Portuguese and it was the largest Art Deco statue in the world at the time of 1931 to 2010. The statue is resting at the height of 700 meter in Corcovado Mountain and 220 steps should be climbed to reach the statue. It is of 30 meter height, 8 meter pedestal, arms are about 28 meter stretch and 635 tones weight.

2. Copacabana Beach

Copacabana is a magnificent confluence of land & sea and its has a more active vibe than its equally famous neighbor, Ipanema. One can spot the Rio locals, called as “cariocas,” having a game of soccer or volleyball in action, and vendors vociferously hawk their drinks and snacks from the kiosks that line the beach. Fort Copacabana, a military base with a wartime museum that is open to the public, stands at one end of the beach. On the length of beach fronting the fort, fishermen offer up their morning catch for sale. This beach is surely a must visit on a trip to Rio.

3. Sugar Loaf Mountain

Sugar Loaf Mountain is a peak at Rio de Janeiro and it is about 396 meter in height. The mountain resembles a concentrated loaf sugar which is known as Pao de Acucar in Portuguese. Sugar Loaf Mountain is at the meeting point of Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The name was proposed in 16th century by the Portuguese during the trade of sugar in Brazil. One can witness the rock climbing at sugarloaf and other two nearby mountains.

Ipanema Beach, the “sticky lake” is located in south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The place became popular by the song “The girl from Ipanema’’ written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ipanema beach is situated near to Copacabana beach and Leblon beach. This beach reflects the notion of freedom and innovation. The water becomes green color and muddy after the heavy rain hence it is known as sticky lake. One can play volleyball and frescobal at the beach, so it is a favorite spot for the people who like sports. 

5. Tijuca National Park

A lush Atlantic rainforest, Tijuca National Park is an absolute wonder it is the world’s largest urban forest which covers 12.4mi² (32km²) and was a result of incredible forward thinking by Emperor Dom Pedro II. The national park includes the Corcodova which offers stunning views from its summit where the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer is situated. It also offers fantastic picnic areas, many waterfalls and some great walks. Wildlife in the park includes insects, ocelots and howler monkeys. The reintroduction of birdlife has been particularly successful and it is a birdwatchers heaven.

6. Santa Teresa

The Santa Teresa is one of the artistic hotspot as well as the bohemian neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Santa Teresa is a neighborhood city at Rio de Janeiro, which is located on top of the Santa Teresa hill. This was commenced from the Santa Teresa Convent which was built in 1750s on the Desterro or Exile hill by the sisters Jacinta and Francisca Rodrigues Ayres. The place serves as the home to several artists, art studios and galleries. One of the Santa Teresa’s colonists was Raimundo Otoni Castro Maya, an art collector who lived in his Chacara do Ceu mansion.

The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a world famous festival held before Lent every year and considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723.  The type of energy that the city of Rio festival emulates is just simply electrifying. What is even more exhilarating are the deliciously bronzed samba dancers, the pulsating music, the energy and applause of the spectators filled with Cariocas and visitors from around the world who call come to the same place to experience the world famous Rio Carnival.

8. Jardim Botanico

The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden or Jardim Botânico shows the diversity of Brazilian and foreign flora. It houses around 6,500 species (some endangered) which are distributed throughout an area of 54 hectares, and there are many greenhouses. The Garden also has monuments of historical, artistic and archaeological significance. It also has an important research center, which includes the most complete library in the country specializing in botany with over 32,000 volumes. This botanical gardens are indeed more than just garden.

9. Lapa Neighborhood

Unlike many of Rio’s most popular destinations, Lapa is not admired for its beachfront real estate or bikini-clad models. Although this  neighborhood claims a bit of coastline, Lapa is known for something much more sultry: its signature rhythm. Sounds of samba, forró, and choro emanate from Lapa’s packed nightclubs—establishments bursting with passionate self-expression and all-night energy. The neighborhood’s colonial aqueduct and colorful parks promise that its cultural richness extends beyond the evening.

10. Maracana Stadium

The Marcana Stadium is famous soccer stadium in the city of Rio and is counted as one of the most iconic soccer temples in the world.  It was built for the World Cup of 1950, and fully renovated for the World Cup 2014.  The stadium is characterized by two large rings of tiers laid down around the entire playing field. The architecture of the museum itself is a masterpiece which should be marveled at the visit.
