The Dutch government identified nine sectors in which the Dutch economy is particularly strong. Several of these sectors also see rapid growths in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and provide mutual opportunities for Emirati and Dutch businesses in trade and economic cooperation.

HIGH TECH INDUSTRIES IN THE NETHERLANDS

High tech industries in the Netherlands are among the most innovative in the world, thanks to state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge research and development. Dutch techno-logical know-how and products are much sought-after and are exported worldwide.

Economic opportunities and social challenges will develop hand-in-hand in the coming decades. Global issues of sustain-ability, health care and mobility ask for high tech, multi-disci-plinary solutions.

The high tech sector includes a number of closely related in-dustries, including equipment manufacturing and machinery, ICT, automotive and aerospace.

EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING & MACHINERY

The Dutch industry of equipment manufacturing and ma-chinery plays an important role in many industrial chains and other sectors such as transport, medical appliances, semicon-ductors, automotive, aerospace, chemical, shipbuilding, and energy and engineering industries.

The industry is characterized by its focus on “low volume, high diversity”. Through its strongly developed collaboration between companies, its focus on innovation, cost control and high level of automation the industry can provide custom-made high tech equipment and machines for clients all over the world. Many smaller Dutch OEM’s are global leaders in niche markets worldwide.

ICT

The IT ecosystem in the Netherlands has given rise to global-ly-competitive software developers, hardware companies and IT consultancies in areas such as business, simulation, mobil-ity, healthcare and safety.

Dutch public-private partnerships, in which the government works closely with academia and the private sector, effectively push the boundaries in areas such as parallel computing, modelling, embedded systems, multimedia technologies and virtual laboratories.

AUTOMOTIVE

Automotive is one of the main manufacturing industries in the Netherlands. The Dutch automotive industry is characterized by the presence of a significant variety of manufacturers and suppliers. It covers a wide range of activities related to the production of vehicles ranging from manufacturing of trucks, buses and cars, manufacturing of special vehicles, construc-tions of coachworks and manufacturing of trailers, to innova-tive suppliers of high tech components and systems. They all are supported by a knowledge infrastructure of supporting (R&D) institutes and universities.

Dutch automotive worldwide

Dutch automotive companies develop and produce systems, components and materials for all the major manufacturers worldwide. Their clients range from major car manufacturers such as BMW, Daimler Chrysler, General Motors, PSA and the Volkswagen Group, to special brands like Maserati, Lam-borghini, Bentley and Ferrari.

Some Dutch companies with activities in the global auto-motive industry are Inalfa (roof systems), NXP (electronics), AkzoNobel (coating) and DSM (resins).

AEROSPACE

The aerospace sector in the Netherlands is high tech and based on almost a century of experience in military and civil aircraft and space systems. Close ties with the Air Force, airlines such as KLM-Air France, and government-supported research institutions provide the sector with specialized know-how on broad aerospace matters.

Aeronautics manufacture

Centrepiece in Dutch aircraft manufacture is Fokker Tech-nologies, which is today a prime supplier to major aircraft companies like Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Gulfstream and Dassault. Fokker’s main competences are in design and manufacture of parts, materials and complete cable assem-blies for aircraft and engines.

Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO)

The Netherlands has a strongly developed MRO-sector for all different aircraft segments, both military and civil. With the presence of a strong aerospace cluster and availability of highly qualified personnel, the Netherlands MRO-sector offers excellent opportunities for aerospace companies in the UAE, for instance in the development of international aircraft support networks, aircraft modification design services, and training.

Netherlands Aerospace Group (NAG)

The Netherlands Aerospace Group is supporting the strong Dutch aerospace cluster on the global market. Practically all enterprises that excel in education, R&D, engineering, produc-tion, MRO and the associated support functions have united under the umbrella of the NAG. In 2012 a three-year Partners in International Business (PIB) programme was initiated named “Desert Tulip”, to enhance the cooperation between

• KLM Maintenance & Engineering in combination with Air France Industries is the world’s second largest MRO company.• In 2014 the Dutch government, in cooperation with Nether- lands aerospace sector, announced a Knowledge-2-Knowl- edge program between UAE partners and Dutch aerospace companies to further strengthen aerospace R&D cooperation.

Space systems

As a member country in the European Space Agency (ESA), the Netherlands hosts the European Space Research & Technol-ogy Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk. Some 60 Dutch companies, knowledge institutes and university departments are involved in space activities, of which two-third is R&D related.
