Home Learning Guidance Topic: Explorers Year 1-wkc 22.06.20 This is a guidance document of suggested activities which could be completed at home to support home learning whilst your child is not in school. Please refer to our school website and the curriculum pages for specific information for each subject on learning outcomes related to age related year group expectations. The activities are only a guide for home learning and could be adapted or extended. All children have access to online learning. If you have any questions about log ins, please email the school. Reading Independent reading – All children should read daily at home either independently or with an adult. Hearing a story and the language is extremely beneficial. Reading Challenge: Read as many different books about travellers and explorers as you can. If any of the story events link to things which your child has experienced, do please discuss this with them. Keep a book diary to share at school. When reading your child a story, if it has a repeated pattern, can they join in with the repeated words and phrases? Challenge- Can they make up any alternative endings to the story? Our suggested book for in school this week is “The treasure of pirate Frank”. The authors, Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham. There are versions of it available to watch on and read along with on YouTube if you do not have a copy. Discuss the story, who are the characters? What is special about Frank? What won’t Frank do? Purple Mash – You could try “magic in the moon light” on Serial Mash. Phonics – Practise using phonics to read and write real and nonsense words, sounding them out together. This week focus on the alternative spellings for the /oa/ phoneme. Practise reading sentences that contain various spellings of the /oa/ phoneme. The old toast is as hard as stone. Will you moan if your phone is thrown out of the window? Will a bad throat or a bad toe make you croak like a toad? Practise reading the tricky words: water, where, who, again and then write them in sentences. There are Phase 5 games with these sounds on PhonicsPlay.co.uk and a free login for home learning during the current situation. It is MARCH20 with a password home. Purple Mash also has some good games. We have added some phonics games as a “2Do”. Maths KIRFS –Practise the Key Instant Recall Facts. (Ongoing.) This week’s work is from White Rose Maths. There is a lesson to watch for each worksheet to help you with your understanding of halves and quarters. Perhaps you could write some sharing stories for your maths to help Pirate Frank learn to share? Purple Mash – The addition and subtraction racing games will continue to be available on Purple Mash. Writing Handwriting – Practise your handwriting – Our handwriting guidance on letter formation is available on the website. (Ongoing) Writing: On our theme of Explorers the book we plan to use in school this week is “The treasure of pirate Frank”. Read this, or another favourite book about pirates, together, then try making lists of what pirates should or could share. Can they write a sentence about sharing something at home with their family? Can you write your own adventure with Frank and what do you think she should share with you? You can story board this first using pictures and captions then go onto writing it. Remember to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Practise this week’s spellings in groups of 5 words at time with your child. (These can also be found on Spelling Shed.) The digraph ‘ie’ making the /ee/ sound. Chief, thief , piece, brief, handkerchief, field, belief, priest, shield, grief ‘Common exception words for year 1’ can be found online if you want to practise these as well. There is a common exception words spelling quiz on Purple Mash as a “2Do”.

Science

Our topics this term are: Seasonal Changes and Plants If you have grown any plants, keep a record of it by measuring and recording it. It would be lovely to see some photos of them. Can you go on a plant hunt around your garden and make simple drawings of them? You could label them using petal, flower, leaf, stem.

Topic/Project Carrying on with explorers: can you find out about Christopher Columbus? Where was he from? When was he born? What did he do? Where did he travel? Who did he meet? Make a mind map of all the facts you find out about him. In Design and Technology, this week can you design a healthy snack for another member of the family. It could be anything from a fruit kebab to healthy breakfast muffin. Draw and label the picture and say why it is healthy. Online learning:

BBC Bitesize - there are some short clips about food groups and making healthy choices at https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv4cwmn/resources/1

Purple Mash - There is a food groups poster available as a 2Do until the end of June and the opportunity to plan a healthy meal. There are also some fun drawing activities for a pizza and a meal. Top tip – if you choose to draw the pizza, I recommend starting with the base, and drawing the rest in order! They will all be available until the end of term.
