Burgoyne Debate

Principal’s Message
The Burgoyne Debate was held at the Tottenham Golf Club last Wednesday night. Once again this was a very entertaining evening with the audience being treated to a high quality debate and a delicious dinner. The Year 5 & 6 students worked extremely hard in the weeks leading up to the debate, preparing their arguments and techniques. The students had obviously put a lot of thought and time into researching the topic - “That life is better for children today”. Both teams presented very good arguments, and of equal importance on the night, each speaker demonstrated excellent technique as well as making some very good rebuttals. The standard of the debate was outstanding and members of both teams should be proud of the way they spoke. The adjudicators, Mrs Chrissie Baldwinson and Mrs Carmel Logan were also very impressed and awarded the Year 5 team a narrow victory. The students were well prepared, and my thanks go to Mrs Rose Martin and Mrs Kim Williams for the excellent job they did in coaching the students and for ensuring that this important event was a success. A night such as this requires the hard work and input of many people and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those involved behind the scenes. Tottenham Lions Club initiated the Burgoyne Debate in 1980 and last week the tradition continued. Thanks to Mr Ted Wright, who was an excellent MC, and Tottenham Lions Club members for the organisation and support for this event. I would also like to thank the Tottenham Golf Club for providing such a great venue and many thanks to Kerrie, Wanita and Hannah for the delicious dinner and dessert. Special thanks to Mrs Cynthia Berryman who presented the Burgoyne Shield for 2013 to the winning team - Year 5! Last week we also had our Well-Being Day, which was a huge success, with students enjoying the various activities and especially joining in the circus skills with much excitement and enthusiasm. All students had the opportunity to try out a number of circus skills and apparatus including hula hoops, diabolos, juggling bean-bags, balls, and bowling pins, tight rope walking, and balancing on boards and a large ball The highlight for older students, must have been walking on stilts and learning how to ride a uni-cycle. Other activities on the Well-Being Day included yoga classes, a
presentation from a dietician, as well as other ‘team-building’ activities. I am sure secondary students will have gained much from the Graham Hyman seminar which was held between recess and lunch. Graham spoke to our secondary students- with students from Trangie CS, Tullamore CS and Trundle CS also in attendance. He had many vital messages for the students, including the importance of positive relationships in our lives and how valuable parents and family are to well-being and quality of life. As well, there were strategies for how to handle other teenage issues such as stress and bullying. He also presented a good insight into the dangers and impact of the many negative, subtle messages that teenagers are exposed to from various media and advertising. Graham Hyman has given our school his presentations- “Understanding You Teenager” and “Preparing for Your Teenager, on audio CDs. These CDs can be borrowed from the library. My thanks to Mrs Jane Baker, Mrs Kate Lees and Ms Katie Francis as well as all parents who donated muffins. The wraps and muffins were delicious and appreciated by all students and staff. Many thanks also to Mrs Janelle Hopkins for presenting several yoga classes throughout the day. All in all a wonderful day - a very special thanks to Mrs Susan Larkings, who worked extremely hard to make the Well-Being Day the success it was! Week 4 is Primary ‘Excursion Week’ which I am sure will also be an exciting time for all students. I am sure students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will have a great time during their four day Sydney excursion. The Year 3 students will also enjoy their overnight excursion at Wambangalang and I know the K, 1, 2 students will have the best time out at Dubbo Zoo on Wednesday. Trusting everyone will have an enjoyable week!

Amanda Smith PARENTS OF YEAR 5 STUDENTS - SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT - YR 7 2015 Government schools use a range of strategies to meet the educational needs of gifted and talented students. One strategy is selective high school placement which provides intellectual stimulation and an educationally enriched environment for gifted and talented students.
