My Winter Trip 2017:

Tourist in Silicon Valley & around

Kristi Rohtsalu © February 2017

“You are on holiday… in Mountain View? Why?”

The guy who had just agitated me to join a local movement,

seemed astonished. As if nobody came to Silicon Valley for

holidays…

“Because I like here and nearby – and because I

find the place inspirational.”

For me, travelling has two complementary dimensions:

a) External journey: changing environments physically

b) Internal journey: withdrawing from daily hassles to look at

things from perspective

2

Landing in San Francisco International Airport

(Ok, my plane landed late in the night and I stayed there in the airport over night.)

3

San Francisco for a “normal” tourist on a cloudy dayThis view inspires songs like

Sniffing around in Google’s placesFrom a Google bike on the road, one can “smell” closeness of

working there

Not-so-often pictured Executive Briefing Center

One of the buildings in Googleplex: there is The Garage, a community of hackers, makers and designers

I found this shared accommodation also from Airbnb.com for a fairly reasonable price

Neighborhoods

Trying out: Google’s self-driving car Waymo and TeslaWaymo: Sitting in a car without the wheel feels a bit… unusual Waymo: A number of those were driving on the streets

Tesla, Model X; According to the description: the safest, fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle in historyI’m in no position to comment on this, but it felt great. Elegant car in any case!

4h in Computer History Museum. Geek appeal: *****Tried to understand how slider, Napier’s bones and abacus work(ed)

Browsed through 20 collections from calculators to computers to supercomputers and robots
