    Message from the PresidentF

Its that time of the week again! It was a day or two that I had to write the last report buthere it goes with number 3. I thought Id write about some of the things within the club thatreally do touch me and put the old smile back on my face .

I have in the last while been attending Interact induction dinners and there is nothing more awesomethan to see what these young folks do and how little guidance they need. Standing one side and justlistening and watching them, I truly see that they are our future in this wonderful country we live in.What is a bit scary is to see how little time adults have for these youngsters. One would think, as aninvestment, we would be looking after them but somehow it does not happen. I would like to encourageevery one of you to just take the time to put a smile on a youngsters face only once between now andChristmas, and if you are serious, please do write to our editor and tell us how it left you feeling .

Something else that puts a smile on my face is to see PP Ken at his age just chomping at the bit to beinvolved and he does get involved - just look at the bingo evening. At his age all I can say is I hope Iget there one day Very well done PP Ken! And not forgotten is Rtn Leon and his team : thank you forkeeping us so well entertained. The fellowship was great.

A word of thanks to Rtn Alvin Dolley for introducing Rtn Ashwin and his family to our club. I would like towelcome them and encourage them to get involved and I encourage each one of you to help mentor RtnAshwin so that he has the best chance of enjoying being a true Rotarian.

I would like to congratulate my wife and the Anns for their successful performance at the steak braai that was great team work! Well done. As your Club President it leaves me feeling very proud of the wayyou portrayed Rotary in the public eye. (It was very good PR).

    Until next time.

    Editorial

    Hello fellow Rotarians,

Can you believe it! It's already the end of August!Time flies when you're enjoying yourself.

Although yours truly couldn't make it, by allaccounts the Bingo evening was a great success .Great fellowship, great soup and , of course, themaster, Ken, calling the shots with his DowningStreet, Key to the Door, Legs 11,etc.. We shouldhave a full report on this soon ( see some picsbelow ).At least, as a true Bok supporter, I'm a lot happiernow that we've beaten the Aussies although

there's still 1 game to go. As far as the Kiwis areconcerned, I'm not too upbeat with theirperformance. It's almost as if history is repeatingitself one year from a World Cup tournament. Whoknows what's going to happen. And staying on the sports front, congratulations toour local boy and recent guest speaker JohanBotha for being selected as the Proteas 20/20captain, with the ODI's captaincy to come soon.

    Hou die blink kant b..

    FIRESIDE FEEDBACK

I've heard about the District Training Committee and PRLS. What's this all about?

Let's set the scene.........There seems to be a Rotary tradition of inducting new members one day andelecting them President-Elect the next day. While getting new members engaged early in Rotary is a

good idea, engaging them without proper training is risky, particularly when the untrained member is theclub president. How many corporations do you know of which could afford to replace 32,000 branchmanagers every twelve months, half of those replacements being new-hires fresh off the street, at thesame time that it replaces its corporate president and half of the board members? AND STILL OPERATESUCCESSFULLY? The compounding problem of this baptism by fire method of training leaders is thatthe club is left with a chain of untrained former leaders trying to train future leaders.

The challenge.................In order to manage this,Rotary International provides training opportunities forall Rotarians. It produces and provides training resources for a variety of training seminars heldthroughout the year for district leaders, club leaders and members.

A very good program, endorsed by Rotary International and developed by Rotary districts is the Potential

Rotary Leadership Seminar (PRLS). This program has a predefined curriculum and materials and isbeing successfully run by various Rotary districts including our District 9320. PDG's Fred Roberts andDes Willis head up our District initiative with PDG Lionel Heath being the Trainer for the SouthernRegion. For a nominal fee training is provided to club leaders and members and is normally offered as aseries of Saturday sessions which are open to any Rotarian wishing to learn more about Rotary and tobecome a club leader.

Topics covered include:Membership Orientation Creating Service ProjectsInternational Service Motivating RotariansVocational Service Written CommunicationsPublic Speaking The Rotary Foundation

How to run a Meeting Effecting ChangeThe Object of Rotary Problems of LeadershipMembership Development Effective Committees

The coursework is primarily oriented around interactive learning such as workshops and role playing.Combined with excellent printed material, these courses produce better informed and more motivatedRotarians who can move forward confidently into Rotary Leadership roles.

A final thought..................... Besides being good for Rotary, leadership training is good for the Rotarianas well. Much of what the trainees will lean in these programs has direct application to his or herbusiness life. What a great recruiting tool for new members and future leaders!

DON'T JUST BE A ROTARIAN IN NAME ONLY. GET TO KNOW ROTARY, GET INVOLVED. YOU'LL

FIND THAT LIFE IS FAR MORE REWARDING. SO IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, PLEASE SPEAK TO

    PRESIDENT SHAUN

This old man in his eighties got up and was putting onhis coat. His wife said, "Where are you going ?"He said, "I'm going to the doctor."And she said, "Why? Are you sick?""No," he replied. "I'm going to get me some of those new

Viagra pills."So his wife got up out of her rocker and was putting onher sweater and he said, "Where are you going?"She said, "I'm going to the doctor too."He said, "Why?"She said, "If you're going to start using that rusty oldthing again,I'm going to get a tetanus shot."

    HA-HA

There was an old priest who got sick of all the people in

his parish confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in thepulpit, he said, "If I hear one more person confess toadultery, I'll quit!"Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a codeword. Someone who had committed adultery would sayinstead that they had 'fallen.'This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things wentwell until the priest passed away at a ripe old age. A fewdays after the new priest arrived, he visited the mayor ofthe town and seemed very concerned."Mayor, you have to do something about the sidewalksin town. When people come into the confessional, theykeep telling me they've fallen."

The mayor started to laugh, realizing that no one hadtold the new priest about the code word. But, before hecould explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at himand shouted, "I don't know what you're laughing about, because your wife has fallen three times this week!"

Human skin is actually made up of billions of tiny units of protoplasm, called "cells"! And what is even moreinteresting, the ones on the outside are all dying! This is a fact. Your skin is like an aggressive modern corporation, where the older veteran cells, who have finally worked their way to the top and obtained offices with nice views, areconstantly being shoved out the window head first, without so much as a pension plan, by younger hotshot cellsmoving up from below.

Can you guess the song title or artist?

    ANNS CORNER.

    Hello All

The Anns have been busy as usual and this time we made up 35 cool cotton

caps and 35 bandana's and donated them to Cansa who gave them to Cancer

patients who have lost their hair due to treatment. Each one was

individually put into a plastic packet with a message of hope and love fromthe Ann's of Uitenhage South and gratefully received by the Look Good,

    Feel Good co-ordinator.

Hows this for Bridging Continents: The wool that we use to have the jerseys and teddies knitted for us by old

folk in our community comes directly to us from CHINA. Shelley was able to get a contact that ships very usable

wool to her every few months and obviously she sends him plenty of pictures to show how his generous

intercontinental donation is used. Isnt email fantastic!

Our grocery collection went to Ubuntu Place of Safety again as they have been affected by the strikes at VW.

Denise Swift and myself have been co-opted onto their management committee for this year.

Mattys Home for the Aged and Huis Tevrede in Despatch were the recipients of the toiletries we collected and the

balance of the Romany Cream treats.

Our hostess for this months meeting was Linda Strydom but once again Vivienne Sandy jumped in to help her and

here follows the recipe of the evening:
