Where is the one place the American flag flies 24 hours a day, is never raised or
lowered and is never saluted?
Dining Services Committee
The first meeting of the Dining Services Committee
was held on Wednesday, July 12th. Committee
members are Doris Davies, Chair; members, Betty
Birdsong (A702), Jo Ann Doyle (A603), Jim
Meriwether (B711), Director of Dining Services, Steve
Hamilton and Executive Director, Chris Peterson. The
committee will meet monthly as long as is needed
and will then revert to meeting quarterly. The
members were chosen because they all eat in the
dining room regularly and are owners in good
standing of the Towers.
Their duties do not include providing feedback on
staffing requirements, equipment needs, salary
information or procedural matters. These things fall
under the supervision of the Executive Director.
The committee is NOT meant to be a complaint
committee. We will be pleased to hear your ideas on
ways to improve service both in the dining room and
at the various Sun Porch functions. If you have a
problem with your dining experience please let your
server and a member of the dining room staff know
immediately. It is always better to address an
oversight or a poorly prepared meal item on the spot
than try to construct the incident after the fact.

Emerson William Peet III A913 (Known as Bill, but prefers Emerson)
In 1991 when Emerson was 26 years old he woke up one morning with an excruciating headache. Emerson, a handsome young man, worked as the assistant manager at Buckhead Men’s Shop in Perimeter Mall. He was always impeccably dressed. At night he played his beloved drums in a band performing in nightclubs throughout Atlanta. He had a girl friend. He had a great life. Everything was perfect. He planned to marry, buy a house and raise a family. Emerson’s story is a heart-warming tale of overcoming adversity with bravery and courage. Life changed for him overnight. He walked into St. Joe’s Hospital and was wheeled out. His headache was caused by a brain aneurism and surgery had left him with severe neurological problems. He couldn’t stand. He was paralyzed. He had trouble with his speech. Emerson was devastated. He remembered when he was in middle school at an ice cream social seeing a boy in a wheelchair and thinking ‘this must be the boy’s destiny’. Now this had become his destiny. His girl friend wanted to “stay the course” but he wouldn’t let her. He thought himself a “lesser man…inferior. He went through the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. It took him 7 years following surgery to accept that he would never again be able to play his beloved drums. He sold them. Over the years he slowly began to count his blessings. He saw people much more damaged than he….people who not only had had their bodies destroyed but their minds as well…... people who had been in terrible car accidents, suffered from gun shot wounds and other tragic causes. He realized how lucky he was not to be mentally impaired. He said “It is amazing how much one takes for granted.” He worked hard in physical therapy to improve his condition. Finally in 2012, 21 years after his surgery, fate decided to reach out and give Emerson a break. Lightning struck his childhood home and he and his mother were forced to move. They chose a two bedroom unit in MVT. When Emerson’s mother was relocated to a nearby memory care facility Emerson moved to a studio on the 9th floor. “When I moved here I totally ‘lucked out’ he said, I cannot believe how happy I am. For the first time since the surgery I am independent. I can move freely here in my wheelchair. I don’t have to cook. The food here is ‘San-fran-tastic (On Golden Pond). It’s a place where ‘Everybody Knows Your Name’ (Cheers). I am surrounded by at least 50 people I know from my old neighbourhood. I am happy. I found a home”. Before MVT was built it was the site of Emerson’s old school. He has many fond memories of cycling to school here. Now he welcomes newcomers to his MVT home. What has life taught him? “Never say never” he said. Written by Jennifer & Marti

CIVIL WAR TOUR WITH JIM HOWE & LUNCH AT MARIETTA DINER TOUR IS AUGUST 27TH 10:15 The Depot
Will visit the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park Visitors Center and see the free museum and video that explains the Civil War strategy and fighting that took place on June 27, 1864. We will learn the
story about how the North feinted toward Kennesaw Mountain, but actually staged their attacks at nearby Pigeon Hill and Cheatham Hill. We will also see how the South was able to repel the Union Army attack on
June 27, but later had to retreat all the way to the Chattahoochee River one week later because of the Union Army’s flanking maneuver. We will see Civil War riffles, cannons, flags and maps, etc. used in the museum and see three dimensional maps in the video that will fully explain the strategy and tactics used
by both sides during this battle. Lunch at Marietta Diner and a walk to Cheatham Hill to see the site where most of the fighting took place.
