Towers Watson is one of the leading firms offering consulting and solutions in the fields of human resource management and employee benefits. This includes devising strategies to not only attract new employees but also to retain existing ones. The firm is responsible for assisting clients to get the maximum from their employees while at the same time ensuring job satisfaction. This requires a thorough assessment of the clients organisation to formulate appropriate remuneration schemes, incentives and rewards programs, health plans, and retirement and pension plans. These issues are faced by almost every organisation, though the solution offered to each will vary according to the specific needs of the client. In addition to the more widely applicable HR consulting, Towers Watson provides strategic advice to insurance and financial institutions. This involves risk and financial management, and formulating investment strategies. The company traces its roots to the worlds oldest actuarial firm and uses this expertise to identify, analyse and minimise risk for a number of the worlds leading insurance companies. It also oversees mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring in the insurance sector. By using statistical and mathematical tools to analyse the data at hand, the company aims to model the future in order to anticipate risk and accordingly manage capital and investments.

Towers Watson provides a range of services such as HR consulting, risk management, mergers and acquisitions advisory, employee benefits consulting, and actuarial services to the insurance sector. My role as an analyst would be to work in the department dealing with life and general insurance companies. As a part of a team, I will work with other analysts to research and consolidate preliminary data required by the consultants and project managers. I will be supporting the project by contributing to risk assessment studies, financial modelling, reserve studies and mergers and acquisitions valuations. I will help in formulating and analysing the initial results. I will get to interact with the clients during meetings and ensure smooth flow of ideas between the team and the client. I will thus enhance my understanding of the insurance sector and gain knowledge about the process and the tools necessary to provide an effective solution to the client. I will also get on opportunity to work with the latest softwares and applications in the actuarial and financial modelling sectors. All this would require effective teamwork and strong communication and analytical skills. All the while, I will be working towards clearing actuary exams under the mentorship of some of the brightest minds in the industry. Exposure to a multitude of projects, each offering its own unique challenges, will further add to my understanding of the industry. Maintaining a balance between work, personal life, and studies will be the biggest challenge I will face, one that can be tackled only through careful planning and hard work.

I enjoy outdoor sports such as badminton, basketball and cricket. I have regularly played these sports right from my school days and have continued to do so in college through various intra-college competitions. As a part of the school field hockey team, I have won various inter-school events and also managed to win the Delhi zonals. Physically exerting myself has always proved to be a great stress buster. Apart from being an entertaining way to stay fit, playing sports has developed within me the virtues of being humble in victory and gracious in defeat. It has taught me the importance of being patient and working hard towards achieving ones goals. I have learnt how to align ones personal aspirations with the larger goals of the team. This spirit of camaraderie has always helped me to gel easily with people and to work well in a team. Perseverance, even in the face of defeat, is a universally applicable quality that I have developed playing sports at different competitive levels.

I would consider successfully organizing an event for our college fest 'Moksha' as one of my proudest moments. It took weeks of careful planning, budgeting and lobbying to coordinate an event that was attended by almost 500 people. The said event was dubbed 'Battle of the Bands', an inter college rock band competition. This involved coordination with various teams handling different aspects of the event. Often, even the most trivial details led to heated debates and extended arguments. Finding the middle ground that suited everyone proved to be an enormous challenge. Interacting with teams from different colleges and also with people handling logistics such as sound systems, lighting etc. was often difficult, but turned out to be a great learning experience. In a very short period of time, the experience contributed greatly to my interpersonal skills and also to my ability to work on strict timing and monetary constraints. The most satisfying experience of all was to see 500 people thoroughly enjoying themselves during the event. It was very rewarding to see that weeks of hard work had finally paid off in the form of an immensely successful event.
