The New Lake BarringtonIn spring 2015, Lake Barrington wastreated with Alum, a substance that at-tracts phosphorus, creating a floc. Thefloc settles to the bottom of the lake, preventing the nutrients from beingused to fuel algae blooms. The treat-ment was done to prevent blue-greenalgae blooms that were restricting lakeuse during the prime summer season. Aknown side effect of the Alum treat-ment is clear water and increased plantgrowth. One of the plants that has in-creased dramatically is a native plantcalled Elodea (Elodea canadensis). Itprovides habitat for aquatic inverte-brates, fish and amphibians and is afood source for waterfowl, beavers andmuskrats. This plant was not intro-duced in Lake Barrington, but eithercame in from waterfowl or was intro-duced from someone’s aquarium.

Elodea is normally a low growing, dense plant, but it does fragment. Largemats of Elodea fragments this summercreated extra work for the marina staff.Staff and volunteers removed bags offloating fragments that washed up onthe beach and shoreline, and interferedwith the boaters. Raking the plants andremoving them from the lake helps re-duce the spread of the plant.

A healthy, diverse aquatic plant com-munity in Lake Barrington improves thequality of life for the residents andmeans fewer problems from blue-greenalgae blooms in the future.

Once again Mother Nature pro-vided wonderful weather for a great day.The event was match play in foursomeswon decisively by team Europe with 7-1/2points to team USA’s 4-1/2. Europe’swinning team members wearing theirtraditional black & tan were SallyWesolowski, Diane Boger, Sue Allen,Kathy Wilson, Elaine Teschner, LindaCollett, Sharon Trevino and Ann Paineall received nice Tervis tumblers as a win-ning prize. Landscape ReportWe have 1,317 units in LBS, so ourweekly maintenance cost averages $54per residence per month over an eight-month landscape season. Think aboutthis in terms of what a typical single-fam-ily homeowner pays—maybe what youpaid in the past—for landscape care of astandard-size residential lot. Marketpricing for weekly “mow and blow”services is $50 per week, and that pricedoesn’t include shrub pruning, weeding,or turf treatments. That $570,000 peryear also includes more than the care ofareas around your residence—it includesthe maintenance of all 88 acres of turfand 32 acres of planting beds throughoutLBS as well.

Our second largest category of operatingexpense is tree care; it’s the cloud in thesilver lining of living in the unique, forested community that is LBS. Wespend nearly $200,000 per year on ourapproximately 8,800 trees—that’s about$22 per tree! Compare that expense withhomeowners who lived on wooded lotsprior to moving to LBS and have re-ported to me that their annual tree carecosts ran $2,000 to more than $10,000.Most of our tree-care expense—about84%—covers routine pruning to keepour tree population healthy, and to limitthe risk of harm to people or structuresfrom overgrown or weak tree limbs. Therest of our tree-care expense is treatingtrees suffering from insects or disease, re-pairing turf areas left bare after deadtrees are removed, and watering newtrees during their first two years after installation while they establish in theirnew sites.

Mulch expense represents $100,000 peryear. We’ve controlled the rise in this costcategory by purchasing our mulch inbulk—as many as 30 semi-trailer loadsper year!—and using the contractor withthe lowest bid to apply it. As you know,we install our mulch in the late fall sothat winter’s snows compact and stabi-lize the mulch layer, and we mulch bedsin one-third of the community each year.

We can’t overlook our LBS forest pre-serve and natural areas, which are in theprocess of restoration. Our expenses forthese areas total about $85,000 per year,

September brings us shorterdays, cooler nights and thebeginning of Mother Na-ture’s colorful annual dis-play. It’s also when our pacequickens, as kids return to

school and we get “back to business,”after summer days spent in leisure in theoutdoors. For me, it’s also time to final-ize the landscape budget for the upcom-ing year. I thought it would be helpful toprovide some perspective on the annuallandscape operating budget. I’ll focus onthe five major categories of expense thatmake up about 98% of the operatingbudget allocated for landscaping tasks.

It won’t come as a surprise that the bulkof our landscape expense is the amountwe pay to the three maintenance contrac-tors: Sebert, Clarence Davids andGround Pros. These crews are on siteeach week for about eight months of theyear. In spring, they begin with shrubpruning and cleanup of the detritus fromwinter’s wrath and then move into bededging, mowing and weeding on aweekly basis. Another round of shrubpruning occurs in mid-summer, and theseason wraps up with more mowing, bedcleanup, and leaf mulching and removal.A specialty contractor, TruGreen, nowprovides fertilization and weed controlin our turf areas throughout the growingseason, while a waste contractor removesthe dumpsters the other crews fill withlandscape waste, such as the cutbranches from pruned shrubs.

What does this weekly maintenance cyclecost our community each year? About$570,000.

Bill ’s

but we anticipate that, as our naturalareas mature and require less mainte-nance, this expense category will de-crease significantly.

Our last major category of operating expense is the annual flower display located in 23 prominent beds throughoutour community, along with colorful, seasonal containers at our entrances andat The Lodge. Our flower-bed designerworks with the Landscape Commissioneach fall to create lush and interestingplantings and then oversees the contractgrowing of the plant material we will usethe next spring and summer. We budget$33,000 for this each year—that’s only$25 per homeowner. Based on home-owner feedback, the annual flower display is one of the favorite features ofthe LBS landscape.

Maintaining our landscape carries aprice tag, of course. Working together, staff, contractors and the LBS LandscapeCommission representatives deliver ex-cellent value in maintaining the healthand beauty of the landscape shared by allhomeowners at Lake Barrington Shores.

The members of Brushstrokes had a delightful summer painting outdoors. Westarted the season painting, having lunchat Lindy’s Landing. The playful children, glistening water and forever fun ducksgave us enjoyable painting subjects. Asthe summer heat became a challenge, theOnion Pub invited us to paint in a largeroom next to a magnificent field of wildflowers. Their waterfall offered an invi-tation to paint large rock formations. After several pitchers of refreshing ice teaand water, our group enjoyed a very tastylunch. Kelsey Road House has a uniquelarge garden and entrance that is a delight for painters and photographers. There is an old white iron headboardwith adventurous vines meanderingthrough it, many old wooden barrelsfilled with plants—an exciting area topaint and enjoy a delicious lunch. Severalof Kathleen’s cow paintings can be seenat the Kelsey Road House.

We all love Survivor Tennis. We had toplay our best game on August 7 in orderto survive. Perhaps some of us wouldlike to change the rules as we did notsurvive! We’ll give it another try in Sep-tember. If tennis is not great, the foodand the friendships that follow alwaysgive us a lift! Pete Peterson and CherylFlynn were the survivors of our tourna-ment that day.

August has been a really hot tennismonth. Congratulations to all of youwho showed up to play tennis or to feaston our delicious food and drinks. Wewill continue to play through October sosee you on the courts for several moremonths.

BRUSHSTROKES

Though Brushstrokes was chartered as apainting group, it is also a group that en-joys friendships and conversation—and asyou can see, many lunches together. Cometo a meeting and join in the fun. Brush-strokes meets the first and third Wednes-day of each month in the LBS Ballroom. For more information and possible Sep-tember outdoor location, call Kathleen L.McCann 847-989-8437. Watch for infoabout the Christmas in Williamsburglunch on Wednesday, December 7th…it isopen to all LBS residents.

SHORESMENThe Shoresmen season has provided 16 different winners to date, coming from all handicap players! There seems to be much moreparity in the group!!

LANDSCAPE

COSTS

Watering trees, shrubs, perennials and turf once a week will optimize plant health, and that helps keep landscape costs in check. Please do your part to keep the LBS landscape beautiful.

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT!!

Thinking about making changes to the landscape around your home? Before you begin, remember to review your plans with your condo association’s

Landscape Representative, and complete a Landscape Variance Application if needed. The landscape belongs to the association - not to you personally - and the community has adopted rules to preserve the beauty of our shared grounds.

HOSPICE? WHY SHOULD I CARE?There are two sure things in life, death and taxes.

We can’t help with your taxes. There is a lot of confusion, though, about hospice.Join Betsy Haraf to learn what hospice is, when it is time to choose and all the benefitshospice offers to support patients and families during a life limiting illness and be-yond. We’ll also hear about palliative care and how it is used to manage pain andsymptoms of declining health.

Someone said “it’s better to have and not need than to need and not have.” Let’sget this great information and hope we won’t need it.
