History of Towniprene®

In the early sixties, Jake Townley revolutionized slurry handling in the phosphate mining industry by introducing polyurethane as a critical component when applied to wear surfaces in these processes. Working with DuPont, he developed a proprietary urethane formulation called Towniprene® which far outlasted the OEM wear materials.

When it comes to upgrading troublesome wear-parts, Townley was the first commercial supplier of specially

formulated industrial grade urethane used to replace rubber linings and metal process-parts. With excellent abrasion and corrosion resistant properties, many customers rely on Townley to provide the same high quality castings day in and day out for the most severe service found in mining

and power plant processing with abrasive slurries.

Pump Liners & ImpellersTownley pump liners and impellers are the best choice

for handling sliding abrasion of slurries under ¼” and high velocity solids. Very suitable for media with pH between

3-10 and temperatures below 165˚F. Towniprene® can exhibit substantial wear improvement over alloy in certain

applications and often double the life over rubber liners. Consult your Townley representative about when to use our proven TDI and MDI formulations, yielding hardness ranges from 65 shore A to 95 Shore A, for the best results on your pumps applications.

Townley produces parts to fit many of the following legacy OEM slurry pump wet-ends found in mining, sand and gravel and power plant service: Warman, GIW, Thomas, Pemo, Lightning, Galigher, Metso, ASH, Hazelton, and others.

Knife Gate ValvesTownley has created a unique line of Series 80-TP Towniprene® Lined Knife Gate Valves designed to provide an excellent lifetime of service in fine slurry found in mining beneficiation, tailings handling and Coal fired FGD limestone slurry circuits. These rugged one piece cast ductile iron body, urethane lined valves provide absolute sealing when closed because of the precision machined radius on the edge of the blade and the compression seal at the apex. Butterfly Valves

Designed for high flow and throttling applications, Townley butterfly valves span a size range from 3-96” diameter. All Townley butterfly bodies are fully Towniprene® lined with integral gaskets to provide unsurpassed erosion and corrosion resistance. Series TM1, TM2, and 12T valves are equipped with Towniprene® disks, permanently attached to the valve shaft for exceedingly long life in slurry throttling situations. Larger Series 120

valves are designed for high flow and are equipped with neoprene lined disks that provide consistent tight

shutoff without sacrificing corrosion resistance.

HydrocyclonesTownley engineers and manufactures hydrocyclones tailored to the

phosphate, sand, silica and power industries. Townley has the capability to review customers throughput and operation criteria as the basis for design and equipment selection to achieve optimal performance. Our standard DO80 cyclones for classification or dewatering range in sizes from 4” to 48” diameter and 14 ,̊ 20˚ and 30˚ cone body to match the application. Townley also manufactures smaller limestone classification cones for power plant applications.

Additionally, Townley provides urethane lining and replacement components for other legacy OEM hydrocyclones and separators including: Krebs, Linatex, Metpro, Cavex, McClanahan and other OEM installations.

FlotationWorking directly with mining operations, Townley pioneered the Towniprene® urethane formulation for flotation cells more than fifty years ago. Upgrading from OEM rubber materials, these engineered parts have provided improved wear life in all flotation circuits.

Townley produces or is able to reline: Wemco, Denver, Dorr Oliver and Galligher parts along with other mixing and conditioning agitators.

• Towniprene® urethane provides improved abrasion performance with fine feed found in the flotation process

• Towniprene® urethane is naturally resistant to the chemical degradation caused by reagents used in the separation process

• Perfect fit and simple robust construction means trouble-free service

• Metal inserts are integrated where mechanical strength is required

Lined Pipe & FittingsTowniprene® fabricated and lined piping systems are available from 4 inch to 60 inch ID’s up to 25 feet in length with lining thickness from 1/4 inch to 2 inches depending on the requirements of the application. Towniprene® is excellent in fine feed applications up to 165°F and has found widespread use throughout industry. The lining and gaskets are continuous over the flange through the use of cores or centrifugal lining and are chemically bonded to the pipe.

Whether a new build or a re-line, our craftsmen use the same rigorous process to provide you with the best quality lined pipe in the industry. From fabrication of the pipe to your specifications to surface preparation, these industrial-grade lined pipes withstand abrasive and corrosive slurries in suction or discharge service.

The lining is typically supplied in our premium polyurethane formulation. The pipe is molded or spun to the proper ID, then heat-cured in our temperature controlled ovens to ensure tough abrasion resistant physical properties.

Gaskets & SpacersEnsuring a proper seal with pipe flanges and fittings is the perfect application for resilient Towniprene® urethane gaskets, spacers and wedges! Molded from Townley’s proprietary urethane formulations, these unique products are used by the thousands in mines and power plants across North America for connecting tailings pipe or in-plant process piping. The products are great for sealing and fitting common misalignment problems in piping, especially where terrain or plant settling has occurred.

Typical properties of these Towniprene® parts include:

• Drop gaskets come standard with molded-in safety tabs to reduce finger injuries when installing

• Typically produced in yellow for easy identification; other colors available

• Continuous operating temperatures to 165°F

• Mold designs available to fit all standard classes of flanges

• Gaskets available in full-face flange or drop-in style

• Higher durometer to absorb flange compression

• Thicknesses from 1/4 inch to 4 inch

• Custom sizes available

Wear Parts Townley was the first commercial supplier of an industrial grade urethane called Towniprene® for the mineral and metal mining industries. This proprietary elastomer was used to replace rubber linings and metal process parts, where fine slurry processing especially with reagents were prevalent. This rudimentary beginning has grown into a large North American business with applications in sand mining, tailings and coal fired power plants where limestone slurry handling is critical to FGD circuits.

Utilizing state of the art solid works and CAD / CAM methodology, Townley produces the highest quality molds to ensure perfect fit and finish of intricate designs. Anywhere fine slurry changes direction and is subject to “sliding abrasion”, Towniprene® is the perfect solution to extend the life of these linings.
