EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Pinchin Environmental Ltd. (Pinchin) evaluated Ontario Regulation 455/09, of the Toxics

Reduction Act as it applies to the facility Ensyn Technologies Inc. (Ensyn) located in Renfrew,

Ontario. Ensyn is a world leader for the production of renewable liquids from the thermal

conversion of biomass material using their proprietary Rapid Thermal Processing Technology

(RTPTM

).

Products generated from the liquids depend on the specific feedstock being processed but can

include: specialty chemicals (food flavorings, pharmaceuticals), binders (adhesives, road

stabilizers), preservatives, road de-icers and co-polymers (structural foams, plastics). The char

by-product can be further processed to yield quality activated carbon for applications like

wastewater treatment.

The liquids are also suitable as a direct substitute for fossil fuels in a wide range of applications.

They can be direct-fired in boilers/combustors/kilns as well as used to fuel large stationary diesel

engines and gas turbines for co-generation of electricity. These liquids can also be used to

produce transportation fuels. (Diesel, Gasoline and Jet fuel)

Their processes include raw material receiving, sorting and sizing, thermal conversion and

condensation, combustion, product/by-product storage and shipping. Ensyn reported to the 2012

National Pollutant Release Inventory and to the Ministry of Ontario Toxics Reduction Act under

O. Regulation 455/09 for Particulate Matter PM10 and is required to prepare a Toxics Reduction

Plan.

2.0 STATEMENT OF INTENT

Ensyn is committed to playing a leadership role in protecting the environment. Whenever

feasible, we will eliminate, or reduce the use and releases of Particulate Matter (PM10) in

compliance with all Federal and Provincial regulations.

PM is created as a by-product during the material handling and conversion processes. PM is not

intentionally added to the process.

Ensyn considered the substitution of the process media as a potential PM10 reduction options but

unfortunately it is not a viable option since the material costs are about 70% greater and the

annual operating costs were shown to increase by about 20%.

Consequently, at the present time, there are no toxic reduction options that were identified that

will be implemented. Ensyn will continue to monitor new technologies as they emerge.

With reference to the Ontario Toxics Reduction Act, the reduction objectives are outlined in

Section 4 of this Plan Summary.

3.0 SUBSTANCES REQUIRING PLANS

The following substance requires a plan – PM10 - based on 2012 Toxics Reduction Act

accounting information.

PM is created as a by-product during the material handling and conversion process. PM is not

intentionally added to the process.

4.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE PLAN & ANY TARGETS

Ensyn prides itself on technological innovation in order to produce high quality products in an

environmentally responsible manner. We will strive to minimize the creation of Particulate

Matter (PM10) at the facility.

Technical and economic feasibility analysis was conducted on a reduction option but

unfortunately it was not a viable option. Consequently, no options have been identified that will

be implemented, but and as part of the continuous improvement practices at the facility,

technology advances will be monitored for new opportunities to reduce the use of Particulate

Matter (PM10) at the facility.

5.0 OPTIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED (OR STATEMENT THAT NONE ARE TO

BE IMPLEMENTED)

Ensyn’s commitment to continuous improvement has resulted in an extraordinarily lean and

efficient manufacturing facility. PM10 is created at the facility due to material handling and the

thermal conversion process. PM10 is not added to the process.





A process media substitution option was considered as a potential option to reduce the PM10

creation but financial analysis proved the option to be non-viable as it increased annual costs by

18%. Consequently, at this point in time, no toxic reduction options were identified for

implementation that would reduce the amount of PM10 created at the facility. Ensyn will

continue to investigate new technologies and advances as they emerge.

6.0 CONTENTS OF THIS PLAN SUMMARY REFLECTS PLAN

This Plan Summary accurately reflects the Toxic Substance Reduction Plans dated December 19,

2013, prepared for the substances listed in Section 1.0 of this Summary.
