Child Safety before and after school
As we are starting to see those wet cold mornings
(and doesn’t it always seem to rain just as the 3:10pm
siren sounds!), we thought it important to revisit
what happens before and after school. All of this in-
formation is around the safety of your child and duty
of care at school.
A bell goes at 8:30am and that means a teacher will
be on duty so children can come into the yard. The
exceptions are children booked into OSHC or on
Breakfast club mornings, Tuesday & Wednesday,
(where plenty of food is out at 8:15am).
The yard duty teacher supervises the asphalt area,
play equipment and the oval up to the cricket pitch.
These are the areas children can play until it’s time to
go into class. Please note: the canopy/courtyard area
is not a play area.
Teachers will usually have their classroom doors open
by 8:40am - perhaps earlier if there is inclement
weather. Occasionally there may be before school
meetings which effects the time children can enter
their class before the bell. For duty of care reasons
children are not to be in their classroom without
teacher supervision.
When the bell goes at 8:50am it is the expectation all
children immediately go to class.
The school day ends at 3:10pm, children need to be
collected or attend OSHC at this time. At 3:25pm the
siren sounds to inform everyone that the after school
duty is finishing. Any children yet to be collected by
an adult must present to the front office so we can
phone emergency contacts for collection.
Thank you for your support in these procedures.

Fractions in our world! In Room 4, the year 2/3 students have been investigating FRACTIONS and
how we use them each day.
‘We use fractions to share with our friends and to tell the time’ – Eli.
We discovered that we use fractions when we play sports, like Football,
when we play 4 equal quarters. We use fractions when we eat food like
pizza and sandwiches and when we are measuring things.
‘We made bath bombs for our mums for Mother’s Day. We measured how
much to put in the mixing bowl using the measuring cups. The cups had
fractions like ½ and ¼ on them. We followed the recipe and needed to use the
right measuring cups’. - Sarah
Students have been using what
they’ve learnt to create art work
using fractions.
‘We made posters using fractions.
We used paper circles and squares
and cut them into fractions. I made a
picture of a Theatre using fractions.
A fraction is a part of a whole’. –
Edward
‘This is my bird sitting on a fence and
there is a sun and a beak and a body. I
used sixths for the fence and a half for
the sun. We’ve been learning about
fractions in maths and this is a maths
picture. I figured out a really easy way to
make sixths out of a rectangle; I made
thirds and then folded it over and then
you have six pieces and they are all
even’. – Heidi
‘We’ve been learning about halves and
quarters. These are called fractions. I made The Very Hungry Caterpillar. For the legs and
antennae, I used sixteenths, for the body I did quarters and halves and for the head I used eighths. It was quite hard because I
didn’t know how to make sixths and make them even, but I figured it out’. – Paige

Governing Council Update
Governing Council met last Tuesday for our first meeting for
Term 2 with a number of issues on the agenda.
At the end of this year John will have been with us for five
years, meaning that the role of principal has to once again be
advertised. Education Director Deb Graham met with Council
to explain the process and get our input into what we value
about Torrensville and what we are looking for in our Principal
going forward.
John provided an update on a number of current issues and
events at the school, including the plans for fixing the drains in
the courtyard as well as dealing with the recent influx of mice in
the school!
Jen McLelland provided Council with an update on the work of
the Sustainability Group who are looking at getting some well
labelled bins for the school yard to help kids (and parents!) put
things in the right bins and reduce our landfill even further!
Our next meeting is Tuesday of Week 8.

Governing Council has approved the availability to staff,
students and parents at Torrensville Primary of Office 365. This
means our school community can access a suite of products and
resources for free provided by the Department for Education.
Some of the available products include:
LearnLink Email LearnLink Email provides staff and
students with a unique email address through Microsoft's Office
365. It includes a 50GB mailbox, and enables sending of email
attachments up to 6MB.
OneDrive for Business OneDrive for Business is a cloud
service where staff and students can store, share, sync, and
update files from compatible devices.
Office Online Office Online opens Word, Excel, OneNote,
PowerPoint, and Visio documents in your web browser. This
makes it easier to work and share Office files from anywhere
with an internet connection, from almost any device.
Office 365 ProPlus ProPlus lets Office applications be
downloaded and installed on up to 5 personal devices owned
by staff or students (including parent-owned devices).
Skype for Business Skype for Business is an application
that provides instant messaging, audio and video calls, online
meetings and sharing. It also allows conversations to be
recorded.
For this great opportunity to happen for your child, there needs
to be a new internet user agreement signed by parents.
Watch out for the documents coming home next week. We will
give students a week to return the forms. After that only
students with returned user agreement forms will be able to
access the internet.
Office 365 for our school community!
