Farmers have long known the value of producing and selling chickens and eggs. Beyond the chicken lies a wealth of possibilities, and
renowned author and poultry keeper Kelly Klober is here to guide you through the world of alternative poultry species.
The chicken may remain the undisputed king of America’s poultry market, but the organic and local food movements have ignited consumer interest in poultry varieties not seen in any great number on small farms in decades. Poultry keepers today have a unique opportunity to tap into new market niches. Demand is growing for chicken eggs of a different color, homing pigeons for special events, alternatives to the traditional holiday turkey, and more.
Klober walks poultry producers through the process of creating or expanding an alternative poultry venture and offers practical advice on raising and caring for each type of bird discussed as well as building a customer base in local markets.
Beyond the Chicken answers these questions and more:•How much should I pay for breeding stock?•What sort of housing and care will this breed require?•What are the potential markets for these birds?
This indispensable reference features sensible, down-home wisdom sprinkled liberally throughout with warm insights and humorous personal anecdotes from Klober’s decades of experience with poultry of all kinds.
Acres U.S.A. www.acresusa.com
KELLY KLOBER was raised on a small, mixed-livestock farm in Middletown, Missouri, where he began a lifetime of experience with various livestock species—including a range of poultry spe-cies. His grandparents, real country folk, raised White “English” Leghorns and sold three hundred dozen farm-fresh eggs along their weekly egg route in St. Louis County, Missouri.
Klober has been active in poultry and livestock breed pres-ervation for more than thirty-five years. He holds a state farmer degree from the Missouri FFA and has long been involved in 4-H Clubs in a leadership role. Klober is the author of hundreds of
articles and multiple books on small-scale farming, including Talking Chicken and Dirt Hog. Klober and his wife continue to farm about twenty miles east from where Klober was raised, with much love and attention to their heritage poultry flock.

Around the globe most people get their calories from “annual” agriculture — plants that grow
fast for one season, produce lots of seeds, then die. Every single human society that has relied on annual crops for staple foods has collapsed. Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel and many other needs — in your own backyard, farm or ranch. This book, based on real-world practic-es, presents an alternative to the agriculture system of eradication and offers exciting hope for our future.

Fertility & Human and Animal Healththe albrecht Papers, Vol. 8
Albrecht’s Hidden Lessonsthe albrecht Papers, Vol. 3
Albrecht’s Enduring Visionthe albrecht Papers, Vol. 4
This volume is a timely and worthy addition to the preceding Albrecht Papers. Those who read it will be inspired to spread the word about the
logical connections among soil health, animal health and human health until it grows into a public demand for fundamental change that is as compelling as it is necessary. That change must begin with a restored respect among both farmers and scientists for the importance of soil health. From this respect, a commitment to restoring the natural fertility and productivity of the soil must arise as a means of restoring health to humanity.
Albrecht includes convincing explanations of the relation-
ship between humans, plants and animals, and his substantiated theory and observation that declin-ing soil fertility is responsible for poor crops, pathological conditions in animals fed deficient feeds from
such soils, and poor human health.
This collection presents more of Professor Albrecht’s brilliant,
classic essays providing essential insights into the health of our soil. Albrecht was one of the first to see the danger in relying on agri-chemicals instead of soil fertility for healthy crops. In this carefully
organized collection of writings, Albrecht explains the soil-crop system.

Soil Fertility & Human and Animal Health
William A. Albrecht, Ph.D. was undoubtedly the preeminent soil scientist of his time. During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Albrecht made the case for an agronomy based on healthy soil ecosystems rather than simplistic chemical inputs, even as this latter approach was being introduced as the “scientific” agriculture of the future. Time has shown the destructiveness of chemical agriculture, and more and more farmers and agrono-mists are turning to the genuine science of Dr. Albrecht, whose observations and precepts are as applicable today as when they were first written.
“We are gradually coming to believe that the soil, in terms of the food it grows, is a controlling factor in agricultural creation. That this fertility pattern maps out the nutri-tional quality of feeds and foods is not yet widely recognized or appreciated. That it should be is not so expectable when we have been measuring our agricultural output in terms of only bulk and weight increase rather than in terms of nutrition, reproduction, and better survival of the species. The life of the soil is not attractive. The death of it is no recognized disaster. Hence, it may seem farfetched to anyone but a student of both the soil and nutrition to relate the nutritive quality of feeds and foods to the soil.”
— William A. Albrecht, Ph.D.
This valuable collection of classic essays reveals the insights of a brilliant soil scientist who was ahead of his time. In this volume, readers will find a carefully organized and con-vincing explanation of the relationship between soil and human and animal health. It was his substantiated theory and observation that insufficient soil fertility, due to a lack of major elements and trace minerals, was responsible for poor crops, weeds and ultimately declining human and animal health. Albrecht’s work provides essential insights into the health of our soil for anyone interested in sustainable, ecologically responsible agriculture — his teachings are more critical today than ever.

“Nature produces her mineral-rich, high protein crops only where there is a deep, dark-colored surface soil nourishing a crop of microbes on a generous supply of organic residues grown in place. Through that combination the microbes, as the primordial crop, serve to balance soil fertility potential for crops of more nearly constant nutritional ser-vices to the life forms fed by them. We do not yet appreciate the truly living soil, reflecting its degree of development of the rocks into creative potential according to the climate, all pictured in the profile of less than three feet of depth. Of that, the highly organic surface horizon buffers our shocking mechanical and chemical treatments, and yield nutritious crops in spite of, rather than because of, our management of it.”

“Nature has been unique in balancing plant diets. She used no soluble salts. She grew crops on soils where reserve rock minerals were decomposing through microbial help from decayed organic matter. This growth accumulated to bring about inorgano-organic combi-nations of elements and compounds for balanced plant nutrition by selection and synthesis from the same kind of preceding crops. Now that we are testing soil to detect the first limit-ing element, which we then apply, then the second limiting one, and so on, we are bringing about an imbalance of salts, rather than a balance as achieved by the natural plan of plant nutrition through balance of elements and all other factors in the combination of weathering minerals and decaying organic matter from which solubles are leached out to sea.”

Science in Agriculture
by Arden B. Andersen, Ph.D.
By ignoring the truth, ag-chemical enthusiasts are able to claim that pesticides and herbicides
are necessary to feed the world. But science points out that low-to-mediocre crop production, weed, disease, and insect pressures are all symptoms of nutritional imbalances and inadequacies in the soil. The progressive farmer who knows this and adds a measure of common sense will grow bountiful, disease- and pest-free commodities without the use of toxic chemicals. A concise recap of the main schools of thought that make up eco-agriculture — all clearly explained. Both farmer and professional consultant will benefit from this important work.

Foundations of Natural Farmingunderstanding core concepts of ecological agriculture
Organic No-Till Farmingadvancing no-till agriculture: crops, soil, equipment
by Harold Willis, Ph.D.
Join longtime ecological farming author/research-er Harold Willis as he explains the foundation
concepts of natural farming and issues the call for cleaner forms of food and fiber production. In this single volume, the author details the interconnec-tions between soil chemistry, microbial life, plants and livestock. He discusses the current problems in agriculture and suggests how lessons from nature provide the roadmap to efficiency, effectiveness and profitability. This book does not stop at providing recipes of what farmers need to do to farm better, but also passes along an understanding of the why of ecological agriculture.
by Jeff Moyer
Organic No-Till Farming offers a map to an organic farming system that limits tillage,
reduces labor, and improves soil structure. Based on the latest research by pioneering agriculturists, this book offers new technologies and tools based on sound biological principles, making it possible to reduce and even eliminate tillage. Field-tested over many seasons, these methods make cover crops into a source of fertility as well as a tool for weed manage-ment. As traditional tillage turns into rotational till-age, natural soil biology is maximized and synthetic inputs are minimized. For organic farmers who want to refine their practices and conventional farmers interested in new ideas, Organic No-Till Farming is indispensable.

Organic No-Till Farming offers a
map to the Holy Grail of organic
farming — a system that limits
tillage, reduces labor, and improves soil
structure. Based on the latest research
by pioneering agriculturists, this book
arms you with new technologies and tools
based on sound biological principles,
making it possible to reduce and even
eliminate tillage. Jeff moyer’s clear and
comprehensive guided tour of organic no-
till is based on using soil biology to power
the system. Field-tested over many sea-
sons, these methods make cover crops
into a source of fertility as well as a tool
for weed management. As traditional
tillage turns into rotational tillage,
natural soil biology is maximized and
synthetic inputs are minimized. Combin-
ing the best aspects of no-till and satis-
fying the requirements of usDA organic
regulations, the system laid out in this
book “provides great potential for agri-
cultural change,” moyer writes, “through
the use of cover crops and reduction of
synthetic herbicides, while giving organic
farmers what they need in terms of weed
management and soil building practices.”
For organic farmers who want to refine
their practices and conventional farmers
interested in new ideas, Organic No-Till
Farming is indispensable.
JeFF moyer has been working in organic agriculture all his life.
For over 28 years he has been the farm manager/director for the
rodale institute in southeastern pennsylvania. Here moyer conducts
his own research and manages the farm operations department.
Because of his conviction that organic farmers could benefit from
reduced tillage, he has worked for 20 years designing equipment and
techniques specifically for managing cover crops and no-till farming.
moyer has served as chair of the usDA’s national organic standards
Board, which serves to advise the secretary of Agriculture on organic
issues. Jeff is also a founding board member of pennsylvania Certified organic.
moyer also manages sky Hollow Farm where he and his
family have lived for over 30 years. He maintains 52 acres of
crop and woodland, raising beef cattle, hay, grains, and now
as his son orin takes over, pastured poultry.

Eco-Farman acres u.s.a. Primer
by Charles Walters
In this book, eco-agriculture is explained — from the tini-
est molecular building blocks to managing the soil — in ter-minology that not only makes the subject easy to learn, but vibrantly alive. Sections on NP&K, cation exchange ca-pacity, composting, Brix, soil life, and more! Eco-Farm truly delivers a complete education in soils, crops, and weed and insect control. This should be the first book read by everyone begin-ning in eco-agriculture . . . and the most shop-worn book on the shelf of the most experienced.
Weeds, Control Without Poisons
Ask the Plant
by Charles Walters
This book contains specifics on a hundred weeds, why
they grow, what soil conditions spur them on or stop them, what they say about your soil, and how to control them without the obscene presence of poisons, all cross-referenced by scientific and various common names, and a new pictorial glossary. One reader told us that one sentence alone in this blockbuster book saved him $50,000 in one year.
by Charles Walters & Esper K. Chandler
This detailed exposition of the agronomy of consultant
“K” Chandler offers farmers a better way to grow crops. By learning the unique language of plants and utilizing leaf and pet-iole testing, you can determine which fertilizers and soil-build-ing ingredients are truly needed, when they are most needed. Instead of following the conven-tional model of copious amounts of soluble nitrogen fertilizers, it is time to “Ask the Plant” and find out what our crops and soils are really telling us.
Charles Walters & Esper K. Chandler
Soil Fertility, Plant Analysis & Crop Nutrition
Walters &
Chandler
ACrEs U.s.A.
Conventionally grown plants have for decades relied upon the fertilization philosophy of copious amounts of soluble nitrogen aimed to force-feed the landscape green. But after more than seven decades, the soils are being mined, not replenished — especially of organic matter and minerals.
Ask the Plant, based on the agronomy of Esper K. Chandler, offers farmers and growers a better way. Author Charles Walters draws on Chandler’s copious knowledge and experience to teach readers how to read the unique language of plants, utilize the benefits of leaf and petiole testing, and formulate strategies to produce a better crop using only the fertilizers and soil-building ingredients that are truly needed, when they are most needed.
The plant is the judge, jury and sometimes executioner of the grower. “Asking the plant” through petiole or leaf tissue testing is the best way to find out what nutrients are being taken up by the roots right now – a much more timely and accurate conversation, Chandler asserts, than conventional soil testing.
EspEr K. ChandlEr (1926-2008) was a professional agronomist and soil scientist who traveled the country consulting with growers in a quest to improve yields, quality and profits. He was the owner of Texas Plant & soil Lab for more than 27 years. K. Chandler was a founding member of the National Organic standards Board and a Certified Professional Agronomist (CPAg) by the American society of Agronomy. He has been proclaimed as a leader in the soil fertility and plant nutrition field.
CharlEs WaltErs (1926-2009) was the founder of Acres U.s.A and has penned thousands of articles on organic and sustainable agriculture. He has also authored (or co-authored) dozens of books on this subject including Eco-Farm, Weeds: Control without Poisons, Hands-On Agronomy,
Grass, the Forgiveness of Nature, Dung Beetles, Reproduction and Animal Health and more.

A Complete Guide to the Sustainable & Profitable Biological
System of Farming
Biological the
farmer
the Secret to Better farming . . .. . . is that there is no secret — no magic product, no miracle fertilizer.
Biological farmers work with nature, feeding soil life, balancing soil minerals and tilling soils with a purpose. The methods they apply involve a unique system of beliefs, observations and guidelines that result in increased production and profit. This practical how-to guide explains their methods and will help you make farming fun and profitable.
A safe and sustainable system designed to obtain optimum production. Biological farming does not mean less production; it means eliminating obstacles to healthy, efficient production. Once the chemical, physical and biologi-
cal properties of the soil are in balance, you can expect optimal outputs, even in bad years. Biological farming improves the environment, reduces erosion, reduces disease and insect problems, and alters weed pressure — and it accomplishes this by working in harmony with nature.
A common-sense approach. Biological farming focuses on ways to reduce input costs and to increase profits while improv-ing soil conditions and livestock health.
Taking care of the soil. Skilled biological farmers learn how to take care of soil life — they nurture it, feed it a bal-anced diet, and use tillage tools and methods to enhance soil life.
Learn how to fertilize. Biological farmers learn proper fertilizer uses to correct mineral and nutrient imbalances and to feed plants and soil life.

increase profits while improving soil conditions and livestock health. This is the farming consultant’s bible. It schools the interested grower in methods of maintaining a balanced, healthy soil that promises greater productivity at lower costs, and it covers some of the pitfalls of conventional farming practic-es. Zimmer knows how to make responsible farming work. His extensive knowledge of biological farm-ing and consulting experience come through in this complete, practical guide to making farming fun and profitable.
by Gary F. Zimmer & Leilani Zimmer-Durand
One of the leading authorities on biological farming, Zimmer is recognized for improving
farming by restoring soils. Arguing that an optimally productive soil contains a balance of inorganic miner-als, organic materials and living organisms, he relies less on modern improvements than on “the things we’ve learned by improving fertility in a natural, sustainable way over many years.” This book offers invaluable scientific support for committed organic farmers as well as conventional farmers who’d like to reduce chemical inputs and use natural processes to their advantage. Updates and expands upon Zim-mer’s classic, The Biological Farmer. Technically precise yet written in friendly language.

Fertility Farming Fertility Pastures
Herdsmanship Cure Your Own Cattle
Fertility Farming explores an approach that makes
minimal use of plowing, es-chews chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and emphasizes soil fertility via crop rotation, composting, cover cropping and manure application.
Turner details his methods of intensive pasture-based
production of beef and dairy cows in a practical guide to profitable, labor-saving live-stock production. He developed a system of complex “herbal ley mixtures,” or blends of pasture grasses and herbs.
Turner explains that live-stock illness is a result of
bad farming practices and that real livestock health begins with true natural farming disciplines such as compost-ing, biodiverse pastures with deep-rooted forages and herbs, and the avoidance of vaccines, pesticides and antibiotics.
Turner relied on his lifetime of observing animals and
herbs in their natural environ-ment to guide his conclusions. His clear and simple systems and advice remind farmers of the fundamentals that consis-tently work.

by Neal Kinsey
This fascinating DVD details Neal Kinsey’s most important lessons. He teaches a sophisticated,
easy-to-live-with system of fertility management that focuses on balance, not merely quantity of fertility elements. It works in a variety of soils and crops, both conventional and organic. In sharp contrast to the current methods only using NPK and pH and viewing soil merely as a physical support media for plants, the basis of all his teachings are to feed the soil, and let the soil feed the plant. The major princi-ples outlined here will take you a long way down the road to improving the productivity of your soil.
Hands-On Agronomy
by Neal Kinsey & Charles Walters
The soil is more than just a substrate that an-chors crops in place. An ecologically balanced
soil system is essential for maintaining healthy crops. This is a comprehensive manual on soil management showing the “whats and whys” of micronutrients, earthworms, soil drainage, tilth, soil structure and organic matter. Kinsey shows how working with the soil produces healthier crops with a higher yield.
Neal Kinsey draws on his wide range of experience as a master consultant to deliver valuable knowledge in an entertaining, anecdotal style. Growers willing to learn from Kinsey will come to truly understand soil fertility — and not just from a theoretical point of view, but in a practical, “hands-on” manner that can be put to use in the field.

The Non-Toxic Farming Handbook
by Philip A. Wheeler, Ph.D. & Ronald B. Ward
The authors successfully integrate the diverse techniques and technologies of classical or-
ganic farming, Albrecht-style soil fertility balancing, Reams-method soil and plant testing and analysis, and other alternative technologies. By understand-ing all of the available non-toxic tools and when they are effective, you will be able to react to your specific situation and growing conditions. The result will be ever-improving soil fertility, healthy crops that provide their own insect and disease resistance, fields without the curse of weeds, and the satisfaction that you are a true steward of the land.
Mainline Farming for Century 21lessons in reams-method agronomy
by Dan Skow, D.V.M. & Charles Walters
This book demolishes the mythology on which toxic chemical agriculture has been built. Dr.
Dan Skow’s teacher was the late Dr. Carey Reams, and the lessons he learned — and improved upon — are important ones. This book teaches how to mea-sure fertility down to the atomic level and project forward bins and bushels with Brix high enough to confer immunity to fungal, bacterial and insect at-tack — and to ward off weeds. The biological theory of ionization as applied to agriculture for all to understand. Practical, hands-on advice that is hard to come by.

Albrechton Soil Balancing
TheAlbrechtPapers
VOLUME 7
Agriculture U.S. $25.00
Albrechton Soil Balancing
William A. Albrecht, Ph.D. was undoubtedly the pre-eminent soil scientist of his time. During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Albrecht made the case for an agronomy based on healthy soil ecosystems rather than simplistic chemical inputs, even as this latter approach was being introduced as the “scientific” agriculture of the future. Time has shown the destructiveness of chemi-cal agriculture, and more and more farmers and agrono-mists are turning to the genuine science of Dr. Albrecht, whose observations and precepts are as applicable today as when they were first written.
“While the increased production of food is the major objective of agronomic research, such an objective does not exclude concern about the role of food in better health. In simpler terms, better health depends on better nutrition, namely, better edibles in service for growth, work, and maintenance of the vital processes. Only plants have the ability to synthesize from water and carbon dioxide the carbohydrates — stored in the plants and also transformed into fats — as the major source of food for energy. Only the plant can combine, through various reactions aided by soil fertility, the carbohydrates with nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur to give amino acids . . . essential for reproduction, growth, and repair of the protoplasmic tis-sues of the higher forms of life.” — William A. Albrecht, Ph.D.
This valuable collection of essays reveals the insights of a brilliant soil scientist who was years ahead of his time. In this volume, readers will find a convincing explanation of the interconnection between soil, plants and animals — that everything is related to everything else. In these papers Albrecht reveals the importance of the balance equation, that it isn’t enough to have nutrient to soil connections, it is the ratio of one element to another that counts. Albrecht’s insight further reveals that an ounce of prevention in the form of balanced plant nutrition from fertile soils is better than a pound of cure using dangerous poisons. Albrecht’s work provides an indispensable foundation for anyone interested in sustainable, ecologically responsible agriculture.

by Donald L. Schriefer
The farmer’s role is to conduct the symphony of plants and soil. In this book, learn how to coax
the most out of your plants by providing the best soil and removing all yield-limiting factors. Schriefer is best known for his “systems” approach to tillage and soil fertility, and his understanding of soil dynamics and familiarity with modern argriculture’s most ef-fective soil management techniques come together to present a practical, comprehensive guide to effective plant cultivation. Managing soil aeration, water, and residue decay are covered, as well as ridge planting systems, guidelines for cultivating row crops, and managing soil fertility. This book is essential to the grower who seeks to augment his knowledge of soil systems and apply this understanding to every aspect of plant production. Detailed analyses of soil struc-tures and systems helps you develop your own soil fertility system for long-term productivity.
by Donald L. Schriefer
Agriculture in Transition represents the paradigm of innovation and dedication that embodied
Schriefer's life work. He was a pioneer in developing an awareness of the relation of tillage to soil fertility, focusing three major soil basics — soil aeration, soil water, and soil decay — as the foundation of sound, productive agriculture. This book presents a bounty of information, covering such topics as soil chemistry, plant and soil dynamics, above- and below-ground plant management, row support fertilization, zone-tillage, disc-chiseling, and more. Schriefer’s unique approaches to the business of farming involve sys-tems-based analyses that allow the grower to manage the more intimate details of plant/soil care and still account for all aspects of farming.

We don’t need to poison the earth in order to grow better food, and what is harmful to the
environment when improperly disposed of often can be turned back to the soil in a beneficial way through composting — if you know how. Here’s how. Malcolm Beck’s Garden-Ville is one of the largest commercial composting operations in the country. He shares his insight into the processes of decay that can trans-form everything from lawn trimmings to sewer sludge into life-giving earth. Coupled with Beck’s insight into nature and practical advice are remarks from Charles Walters, author and founder of Acres U.S.A.
Fletcher Sims’ Compost
by Charles Walters
Fletcher Sims’ Compost covers the optimal conditions for converting plant and animal
wastes into compost by balancing the correct ratio of raw materials, using the correct microorganisms and moisture content, proper pile or windrow con-struction, and efficient mixing. Fletcher Sims, the Dean of Composters, has elevated the “art” of good composting to a “science.” The book explains not only the complexities of commercial-scale compost production, but also the benefits of the use of this gentle fertilizer. A book that really draws you in, it is a combination of a biography and technical guide.

Fertility from the Ocean Deepnature’s Perfect nutrient Blend for the farm
by Charles Walters
Charles Walters examines Dr. Maynard Murray’s career
and the amazing successes that growers have experienced with his methods of using concen-trated ocean water, as well as further developments in this technology by others. Using hard data obtained in the field, Walters demonstrates that sea-solids fertilizers produce stress-resistant plants and food with naturally extended shelf life and vastly increased nutrient levels.
Sea Energy Agriculturenature’s ideal trace element Blend for farm, livestock, humans
by Maynard Murray, M.D.
Maynard Murray was a med-ical doctor who researched
the importance of minerals — especially trace elements — to plants and animals. Dr. Murray used sea solids — mineral salts remaining after water is evapo-rated from ocean water — as fertilizer. His extensive experi-ments demonstrated repeatedly that plants fertilized with sea solids and animals fed sea-solid-fertilized feeds grow stronger and more resistant to disease.
Food Power from the Seathe seaweed story
by Lee Fryer & Dick Simmons
This book by great minds of eco-agriculture explains
how we can produce our food by using seaweed and fish-based inputs rather than wasteful and unsustainable chemical fertil-izers. Fryer and Simmons tell how growers can harness the sea’s energy to extend growing seasons, increase yields, protect crops from insects and disease, and more. This is a classic work of eco-ag.

Dung Beetlesthe Greatest invention & a cowman’s Profits
Grass, the Forgiveness of Natureexploring the miracle of Grass, Pastures & Grassland farming
by Charles Walters
Dung beetles have always been nature’s greatest recyclers — in a way, they were the first organic
farmers. They were also the first casualties of indus-trial farming. As farmers rediscover the many benefits of grass-based livestock production, dung beetles are given a solid shot at reestablishing their rightful place. Charles Walters digs deep into modern science and ancient history, traditional folklore and the best practical advice to resurrect the dung beetle, exposing farmers and ranchers to this amazing creature. Meet the world’s leading scientists and farmer/researchers who have dedicated years to understanding the roles, actions and value of dung beetles in bringing a graz-ing operation into compliance with nature’s laws, and then harvest the profits.
by Charles Walters
What is the most important plant in the world? In terms of nutritive content, function within the
ecosystem, and even medicinal properties, the answer to this question may very well be grass. Walters makes the case that grass is not just for cows and horses — that in fact it is the most nutritious food produced by nature, as well as the ultimate soil conditioner. Leading agrono-mists not only explain the importance of grasses in our environment, they also share practical knowledge such as when to look for peak levels of nutrition. A must-read for anyone interested in sustainable, bio-correct agriculture.

This 25th anniversary edition of Philip Callahan’s pioneering work, updated by the author, reveals
the miraculous communication systems present in nature. Learn how plants and insects communicate through emissions in the infrared frequency range and why poisonous pesticides do not solve the real problems facing agriculture. In this breakthrough book Callahan uncovers why certain insects are at-tracted only to certain plants, the role of pheromones work in nature, and how plants under stress literally signal insects to come devour them. Classic Callahan!

This book was the first work to attack von Li-ebig’s salt fertilizer thesis, and it stands as
valid today as when first written over 100 years ago. Conventional agriculture is still operating under misconceptions disproved so eloquently by Hensel so long ago. In addition to the classic text, comments by John Hamaker and Phil Callahan add meaning to the body of the book. Many who stand on the shoul-ders of this giant have yet to acknowledge Hensel. A true classic of agriculture.

Natural Horse Care
by Pat Coleby
Proper horse care begins with good nutrition practices. Chances are, if a horse needs medical
attention, the causes can be traced to poor feed-ing practices, nutrient-deficient feed, bad farming and, ultimately, imbalanced, demineralized soil. Pat Coleby shares decades of experience working with a variety of horses. She explains how conventional farming and husbandry practices compromise live-stock health, resulting in problems that standard veterinary techniques can’t properly address. Natu-ral Horse Care addresses a broad spectrum of com-prehensive health care, detailing dozens of horse ail-ments, discussing their origins, and offering proven, natural treatments.
Natural Goat Care
by Pat Coleby
Goats thrive on fully organic natural care. As natural browsers, they have higher mineral
requirements than other domestic animals, so diet is a critical element to maintaining optimal livestock health. In Natural Goat Care, consultant Pat Coleby shows how to solve health problems both with natu-ral herbs and medicines and the ultimate cure, bring-ing the soil into healthy balance. Topics include: correct housing and farming methods; choosing the right livestock; diagnosing health problems; nutri-tional requirements and feeding practices; vitamins and herbal, homeopathic and natural remedies; psychological needs of goats; breeds and breeding techniques.

with 35 years of experience in measuring bulls from a fertility standpoint. He followed 1,500 bulls from birth to death and recorded findings that are un-equaled by any other researcher. Herd Bull Fertility will teach you how to recognize whether a bull is fer-tile even before the semen test. This manual, gener-ously illustrated with photographs and diagrams, is a must for the cattle grower choosing a bull for his or her breeding program.

A Farmer’s Guide to the Bottom Linea handbook to secure success and Profits on the family-scale farm
by Richard Alan Miller
Millions of people are rediscovering the healing power of herbs and the traditional medicines
of our ancestors. The market for fresh, locally-grown herbs and spices is seemingly unending. In this de-finitive work, herb growing, processing and market-ing authority Richard Alan Miller shares his decades of experience. Miller takes herb production out of the home garden and plants it firmly into the realm of the commercially viable enterprise.
by Charles Walters
For more than 35 years, Charles Walters, founder of Acres U.S.A., promoted sustainable agri-
culture while calling attention to the pitfalls and tragedies of the “bigger is better” mentality that has gripped conventional farming. It is precisely this mentality that has led to the unprecedented growth of the corporate farm while ensuring the loss of America’s family farms. A Farmer’s Guide to the Bot-tom Line provides how-to information on each step from planning to implementation of business prac-tices for the eco-friendly farm and includes abundant examples of people who are making a living, and a profit, by demanding a fair price for their labor.

In an organic garden, plants in optimum health thrive abundantly, have harvests with amazing
taste, and have the ability to fight off plant preda-tors. When they don’t there’s often something lack-ing in their proper nutrition, they are missing benefi-cial microorganism companions, or they are short of the energy needed to reach their full nutrient-dense potential. The solution is to “start with the soil.” But healthy soil doesn’t happen just by composting, fertilizing or companion planting alone. The solu-tion is in Building Soils Naturally, where gardeners will find a hands-on plan of how to create productive, living soil by using a practical holistic approach — crafted right in your garden.

Want to win the deer war? Love your garden plants but live in an area with hungry deer that are notorious for
munching your favorite garden plants? Preventing Deer Damage offers successful defensive strategies using natural homemade products, fences and barriers, mechanical noise makers, scent repellents, and other least-toxic products. Now you can enjoy the garden of your dreams and also cohabit with deer.
The more you understand deer habits, the easier it is to choose the best way to deter these marauding browsers. This book will help you pick the best methods to prevent the destruction of your landscape. Often, a single solution is not the answer, but several deterrents will be effective when used together.
This informative book includes selections of plants that deer usually avoid, ones they occasionally eat and those they love to eat. With Preventing Deer Damage, you can live in deer country and still grow the plants that you and deer both love without worrying about when your plants will be the next free meal.
After 50 years of gardening in deer country from New York to North
Carolina to Washington state, Robert G. Juhre has tried just about
every repellent and barrier option there is and shares his many tips
about what works and what does not. On his remote mountaintop
property near Kettle Falls, Washington, Juhre successfully secured
four acres of gardens and orchards from deer, bear and elk and left
the rest of his 16-acre property for
the wildlife to habit. Battle won!

Dr. Richard Olree believes that the key to the biological role of all trace minerals has been
available to science for decades, but nobody real-ized it. Through sequencing the amino acids in the process of constructing proteins, Olree has traced all the elements to their participatory function in the life process.
In this cutting-edge book, the connection is made between the physical, chemical and biological aspects of minerals and subatomic particles in the life pro-cess, and assignment is made of the specific mineral that governs each entry in the genetic code.

The Miracle of Milkhow to use the milk diet scientifically at home
by Barnarr Macfadden
Milk is the greatest of all diet cures,” writes Mac-
fadden in the first line of his book. He continues with, “It will undoubtedly give you more life while you live and it may add many years to your life.” Origi-nally published in 1923, this book touts the health benefits of milk and outlines the milk diet, which when properly prepared for and properly used, Macfad-den says is capable of bringing about miraculous changes.

One Vital Element CanBring You Vibrant Good Health . . .
or Rob You of It.
There’s a mountain in the water you drink. You can consume approximately 450 poundsof inorganic minerals from some tap and well water in your lifetime. This could settle inyour vital organs like it did in grandma’s teakettle, causing all kinds of trouble. Distilledwater is the answer to remove all impurities.
Water, Your Liquid Lifeline to HealthWater — it makes up most of every human being
— all of the bodily processes depend on it — yet thewater we drink is being steadily polluted by thousandsof toxic substances, from disease germs and viruses topoisonous chemicals added by industry or, deliberate-ly, as controversial “medication.”
Tens of thousands of people have turned to dif-ferent types of “purified” water out of concern fortheir health. Yet, what are they really getting? Andwhat will it do for — or to — them? Dr. Allen E.Banik, author of The Choice is Clear, explains howwater functions in the body, what the effects of myr-iad pollutants in drinking water are, their contribu-tions to disease — and most important of all, what really pure water is and howto obtain it.

Charles Walters recognized the national and international implications of applied raw
material economics as revealed in the analyses of the U.S. economy by Carl H. Wilken, Charles B. Ray, John Lee Coulter and J. Carson Adkerson. They demonstrated how all new wealth enters an economy as raw materials provided by Na-ture. By fairly monetizing these raw materials, an economy is diverse, balanced, and free of debt.
In Unforgiven, Walters presents not only the causes and effects of our continuing rural and urban decay, but also a way to stop it — the con-struction of an economy operating in tune with the laws of physics.
by John Ikerd
Since the middle of the last century, American farm policy has taken the nation into the dead
end of industrial farm production and food distribu-tion. Farming, at its core a biological process, has been transformed into an industrial process, thus demolishing the economic and cultural values upon which the nation was founded. Along the way, small farms have been ridiculed and dismissed as inconse-quential — but now the seeds of a rural renaissance are being planted, not by these industrial behemoths, but by family-scale farms. In this collection of essays by one of America’s most influential proponents of sustainable agriculture, the multifaceted case for small farms is built using logic and facts.

This is a primer that makes clear that the only economics that count must square well with the
observed facts. Those facts say that values placed on raw materials as they enter the economic cycle govern the earned income of any economy. Charts, tables and a special summary by the late Vince Ros-siter make Raw Materials Economics a history of the past and a blueprint for the future. If you’ve wanted to gain a better understanding of raw materials eco-nomics, this book is a great way to begin.

This book is a preview of what is being created from almost six decades of Washington’s tinkering with
the foodbelt. This is the story of debt, agency mendac-ity and violations of the law by land banks and Farm-ers Home Administration so blatant they beggar the imagination. The human dramas detailed are more than an indictment, they are a crime, and a sorrow on the land. Documents with personal stories the plight of the American farmer. Everyone concerned about agricul-ture should read and understand the message of this book.

A Beast of Muddy Brain
by Charles Walters
Drawing upon his own experiences of life in the 1930s as well as a lifetime of reporting on agri-
culture and economics, Charles Walters has crafted a new work of fiction. The tale that unfolds in this intensely gripping, often instructive, novel begins in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and grows with its characters through war and peace. Here is the real story of what happens when public policy takes the food from the farmer, giving him very little in return. Page after page, Charles Walters adds to the best of times the fact of rural worst of times, answering questions that are still to be asked.
“Beast of Muddy Brain is, I suspect, more than a little autobiographical. The plot echoes family stories told around campfires and kitchen tables.”
