The physiotherapy role involving exercise prescription, home modifications and footwear evaluation will be discussed. Specific exercises and fall risk assessment will be practiced. PART 3 – Specific Challenges in Geriatric Rehabilitation Challenges in physiotherapy management of frailty and cognitive impairment will be explored. Participants will also discuss mobility impairments and treatment planning for elderly with musculoskeletal conditions. Lastly, we highlight the issue of goal setting and motivation for change in rehabilitation of the older adult.

Course Objectives

After this workshop, the participants will be able to: select the most appropriate mobility and balance tools for any given patient and interpret the findings of the assessment tool to choose impairment measures and inform the treatment plan implement effective exercise strategies for any given patient design a treatment plan based on an evidence-based assessment for a patient with a history of injurious and non-injurious falls using a multi-disciplinary team approach evaluate and intervene in balance problems considering the three systems of balance recognize the components and causes of frailty and how to intervene appropriately analyze motivational problems and challenges with a multiple stakeholder perspective gain knowledge about and apply the principles of person-centred care in the management of persons with cognitive impairment identifies the primary functional problems and associated impairments in specific musculoskeletal systems and relates their significance to mobility discuss multifaceted interventions for the elderly with musculoskeletal problems
