What is Chrome? Chrome is a browser for accessing the Internet just like Internet Explorer or Safari. Chrome is Google’s Internet browser.

What is a Chromebook?A Chromebook is an Internet-dependent laptop that starts up in under 10 seconds. Chromebook is a device that allows users to access and search the web. When turning on the Chromebook users will see Google Chrome as the only available browser. Google Chrome is the key to using the Chromebook: any other work completed on the Chromebook will be done though Web Apps like email, Google Drive, and others that are connected to the network.

Using a Chromebook The Chromebook is much smaller than most devices. Keyboard and mouse features may slightly differ from your desktop computer but with a little practice you will find the device easy to use.

The TrackpadA USB mouse can be connected to a Chromebook, but the trackpad offers all the same options that a physical mouse could offer.

Right Click

When a user needs to right click to get the menu with options to download, copy, or paste, they will have to choose one of the following options.

2 Fingers

1. Place 2 fingers on the track pad.

2. Press the trackpad gently. The right click menu will appear.

Alt Key

1. On the keyboard, press and hold the alt key.

2. Tap the trackpad with your index finger. The right click menu will appear.

Scrolling

When viewing a long web page that require scrolling up and down through the page, the user can navigate through the page using the scroll bar adjacent to the page.

2 Finger Scroll

To use the trackpad to scroll, the user can place 2 fingers on the trackpad and swipe up, down, left, or right to move through the page.

Page Up/Page Down

If you work on long documents or spreadsheets, Page Up and Page Down may be important to maintain productivity. Fortunately, these functions are available even though the keys are not on the keyboard.

1. On the keyboard, press and hold the alt key.

2. Press the appropriate arrow to move through the page.

Chromebook Features The Chromebook’s features are simple and easy to navigate. A user can begin a task with a single click. Files and websites are easily accessed and available for the user to being their work.

LauncherThe launcher is the small magnifying glass located to the bottom left of the screen. Using this feature will allow the user to browse the web and find Apps and files on the Chromebook.

Google Search

1. Click the Launcher icon.

2. In the Google search box, enter a search term.

3. On the keyboard, press the Enter key, a tab will open.

Files & Apps

1. From the bottom left, click the Launcher icon, apps will appear below the Google text field.

2. To view a complete list of apps, click All Apps.

3. Select the desired app.

The OmniboxThe Omnibox serves a search and address bar. It is located above any webpage or the Launcher screen.

1. Open Chrome.

2. In the Omnibox, type a keyword or web address.

3. Select the desired link.

NOTE: Use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + L to begin a search.

Editing the Omnibox

The Omnibox can be used to quickly search your email or drive with just a few letters.

1. To launch the Omnibox menu, right click within the Omnibox.

2. Select Edit search engines.

3. Add a new search engine.

4. To search for files stored in Google Drive directly from the Omnibox complete the following fields to add the Google Drive search engine:

• name: drive

• keyword: gdr

• URL https://drive.google.com/#search?q=%s

5. To search email directly from the Omnibox complete the following fields to add a Gmail search engine:

• name: gmail

• keyword: gml

• URL: https://mail.google.com/mail/ca/u/0/#apps/%s

Using the Search Engine

1. Enter the keyword in the Omnibox.

2. On the keyboard, press the space bar key. You will now be able to perform a keyword search.

BookmarksAdding bookmarks is an easy way to keep track of frequently visited sites.

1. To the right of the web address, click the star icon.

2. Edit/shorten the name of the website as desired.

3. Click Done.

NOTE: A user can also drag and drop the address to the Bookmarks bar. Right click the name to edit if needed.

ShelfThe shelf is the task bar on the screen where a user can open windows and pin frequently used apps and websites to work more productively.

Adding and Removing Pins

Users can add and remove pins to the shelf. Keep in mind this feature will be per user and per device, settings completed will not be transferred to all devices used in a Chromebook cart.

Pinning a Website

1. Use the Omnibox to navigate to the website.

2. To the left of the Omnibox, select the Menu icon.

3. Select More Tools.

4. Select Add to Shelf.

5. Rename the website as desired.

6. Click Add.

Pinning an App

1. Click the launcher icon.

2. Right click the app.

3. Select Pin to shelf.

Removing a pin

1. Right click the pinned app.

2. Select Unpin.

Chrome Browser SettingsAs with any program, settings can be adjusted to make the user’s experience seamless and more productive.

1. From the top right, click the Menu icon.

NOTE: Use a keyboard shortcut by clicking Alt and E. The menu will appear and you can edit settings as needed.

2. Click the desired task.

• Add a New tab or window

• Edit Bookmarks

• View downloads

• Manage the shelf and extensions with More Tools

• Edit the device settings

Force Quit

If for any reason a user needed to force quit a program, that can be completed on a Chromebook.

1. Click the Menu icon.

2. Click More tools.

3. Select Task Manager.

4. Select the program that you wish to force quit.

5. To the bottom right of the window, click End Process.

6. If prompted to restart the program via a pop up, select the most appropriate choice.

Files and Downloads A user can download items to a Chromebook to be used in multiple applications on the web.

Downloading files from Google Drive1. Open Google Drive to locate the file(s) to download.

2. Right click the file or folder.

3. Click Download.

4. Click the number in the status area to view the downloads.

5. Select Show in Folder.

NOTE: Another option is to open your files from the search tool and view the files in the folder.

Images from the web1. Locate the desired image.

2. Right click the image.

3. Select Save Image as...

4. Towards the bottom of the window, enter a name for the image.

5. Click Save.

6. Click Show in Folder to view file.

Attachments and Files1. Locate the desired file.

2. Click the download icon.

• In emails, the icon will be seen on the file.

• For files on the web, preview the file. The download icon will be located to the top left.

3. Towards the bottom of the window, enter a name for the file.

4. Click Save.

5. Click Show in Folder to view file.

Screenshots Taking screenshots to enter in a slide show or project can easily be completed on the Chromebook.

Full Screen1. Press and hold ctrl and keys.

2. The snippet will be taken. A window will indicate the process on the bottom right side of the screen

3. Click the window to view the image.

Partial Screen1. Press and hold ctrl, alt, and keys.

2. The cursor will change into a crosshair selection tool.

3. Click and drag the cursor over the area to copy, release the cursor when the area is covered.

4. The snippet is copied, you can now view it in the folder.

Productivity

ShortcutsChromebook offers a great selection of shortcuts to assist the user in increasing productivity. A full list of shortcuts can be found at (goo.gl/j1QxyV). While the list is comprehensive, a user can always view shortcuts on the Chromebook screen by completing the following steps:

1. On the keyboard, click and hold ctrl, alt, and ? keys.

2. View available shortcuts.

• Tap ctrl to view shortcuts to use with the ctrl key.

• tap alt to view shortcuts to use with the alt key.

• tap shift to view shortcuts to use with the shift key.

• tap the search key to view shortcuts to use with the search key.

3. Click the esc key to close the shortcuts menu.

NOTE: There is also a list of Chrome URLs that will assist with shortcuts, for a complete list type Chrome:// in the omnibox.

Apps and ExtensionsA web app is an application program that is delivered over the internet. Extensions are add-ons to your browser, they are not actual websites. These are located to the top right next to the omnibox.

Adding Apps and Extensions

1. Click the Launch icon.

2. Click All Apps.

3. Click Web Store.

4. Enter a search term to find apps and extensions.

5. Once you locate the desired app or extension, click +ADD TO CHROME.

Logging Off the Chromebook When a user is finished with the Chromebook, it is imperative that they log out of the device to protect their information.

1. From the bottom right of the screen, click the account profile icon.

2. Select Sign Out.

NOTE: Use the keyboard shortcut ctrl, shift, and q twice to log out.

Turning Off the Chromebook1. From the bottom right of the screen, click the account profile icon.

2. Select Shut Down.

NOTE: Users can hold down the power button to the top of the keyboard for several seconds until the device shuts down.
