Training co-workers is primarily modeling of stories.

Modeling is informed by your investigation of the target people’s worldview and its issues that will affect hearing, understanding and acting on the claims of the Gospel.

Storying training often begins with a survey of all the potential Bible stories which might be used to evangelize a people.

Training then continues with a story-by-story presentation with comments on Bible background and supporting Scriptures.

Lead storying trainees to talk about the stories, letting them ask questions and discuss what God’s Word says.

Let the trainees talk about which stories they would use. They may not be able to tell you why they selected the stories.

Model in demonstration how to conduct a storying session.

Model what to do if questions arise the storyer cannot answer.

Model what to do if debate questions are posed or disturbances arise.

Begin a practicum in which storyers tell the stories and conduct a typical storying session. Let the trainees evaluate what each does.

Consider use of ancillary media used to illustrate stories: drama, songs, folk media, pictures, etc.

Talk about and model how to initiate a Bible Storying strategy among a people.

Have a time of commissioning the storyers before they leave to raise the expectation of using the stories with God’s help.

Where interpreters must be used, the interpreters often become storyers themselves.

Usually training is best conducted within a single ethnic or religious background. In some situations men and women must be trained separately.

Training of literates may require a written model replete with WV synopsis and implication, and stories with their accompanying lessons.

Be prepared to defend orality issues and oral modeling of Bible stories and lessons.

Missionary team members will represent a range of openness and patience toward oral modeling. It is difficult for some to do.

Introduction to Bible Storying for missionaries may be encouraged as they witness the training of primary oral communicators.

Resulting model story sets will likely be oral models which will reflect some variation among storyers and their target peoples.

An English written model may need to be derived from the oral models for sharing with short term team members.

Training Others To Use Storying

Storying camps or retreats with those who have used Bible Storying for at least one full track is helpful for getting feedback on their problems--both WV issues and doctrine, for a demonstration of their storying presentation, and for refreshing of critical Bible stories.

Introduce new stories which may be needed.

Begin training for new tracks.

To continue debriefing and to encourage storyers to share their experiences so that you as a trainer can learn from them.

Pray for your storyers, asking for God to anoint them for teaching His Word, to produce fruit for the kingdom, and to open doors for new storying tracks.

Be prepared to continue supporting the storying ministry and the equipping of trainers. Long term support is essential.

Deliberately begin training new trainers by looking for the most skilled and motivated and involving them in the training activities.
