translations swbat: identify isometries to find translation images of figures
TRANSCRIPT
TRANSLATIONSSWBAT:• Identify Isometries• To Find Translation Images of Figures
What is a Transformation?
•A transformation of a geometric figure is a change in its position, shape or size.
Transformation Vocabulary
•Preimage - The original figure
• Image - The resulting figure or new figure
• Isometry - A transformation in which the preimage and and image are congruent. (No Stretching or Shrinking!)
Ex 1: Identify Isometries• Do the transformations appear to be Isometries? Explain...
You Try:• State whether the transformations appear to be an isometry.
Explain.
Notation• A transformation maps a figure onto its image and may be
described with arrow () notation.• Prime (‘) notation is sometimes used to identify image points.• In the diagram, K’ is the image of K • Read (K K’) as “K maps to K prime”

Key Concept: Translation
A translation (or Slide) is an transformation that maps all points of a figure the same distance in the same directions.
Translation Notation• For a translation that will slide right 4 spaces and down 2
spaces
Algebraic Rule
(x,y) -> (x+4, y-2)
Shorthand
T4,-2
Vector Notation
You Try• For a translation that will slide right 2 spaces and up 5 spaces
Algebraic Rule
(x,y) -> (x+2, y+5)
Shorthand
T2,5
Vector Notation
You Try Another• For a translation that will slide left 10 spaces
Algebraic Rule
(x,y) -> (x-10, y)
Shorthand
T-10,0
Vector Notation
Practice 8.1
Lets look at the Rule…
What’s going on with the x?
Slide to the left 4
What’s going on with the y?
Slide up 3
Examine the Rule…
x does not changethen
Slide down 2
Think…
•Would a Translation of a figure be an isometry?
•Does the figure stretch or Shrink?•Does the figure stay congruent?
Find the Coordinates!
• Find the coordinates of the vertices after the translation.
Find the Coordinates!
• Find the coordinates of the vertices after the translation.
Think…
What would the coordinates of ABC be if:
