The latest in digital electronics is the OLED based transparent television that is flexible, sleek as can be, light and of course transparent.

The transparent TV was first seen in the Tom Cruise movie, Minority Report. Today you can have one in your own home. Unbelievably thin and energy efficient, the images displayed on a transparent television are crisp and vivid, with better contrast and better colour reproduction, making viewing an altogether new experience. Being flexible, they can be bent and allow for incredible viewing angles of 150 degrees an above.

How the television works

In a transparent television, designed by Michael Friebe, the screen is made up of big sheets of plastic made up of OLED, or Organic Light Emitting Diodes, sandwiched between glass panels, making the it transparent. The TV is also extremely thin and light, with a 55”, 4mm thick screen can weigh as little as 3.5 kg

OLEDs are thin film solid state devices made of either small organic molecules, or from organic polymers. A transparent TV screen has a cathode and anodes in the design that enable the current to enter and leave the screen. This current excites the OLEDs causing them to emit light, forming images on the screen. The colour of the light emitted depends on the strength of the current.

Reduced power consumption

The plastic in the screen itself emits light, and therefore does not need back light, unlike liquid crystal display (LCD) screens. This reduces the power consumption to a great extent, as the only power that is needed is to generate the images. This also results in a better contrast and faster refresh rate.

Plasma television screens do not need back light either, but they contain gas in the screen, need thicker glass, and hence are bulky. With the rate at which research is being conducted in the field, it shouldn’t be long before one can buy a transparent television that can be rolled.
