Osteopathic Pledge of CommitmentAs members of the osteopathic medical profession, in an effort to instill loyalty and strengthen the profession,

we recall the tenets on which this profession is founded – the dynamic interaction of mind, body and spirit; the body’s ability to heal itself; the primary role of the musculoskeletal system; and preventive medicine as the key to maintaining health. We recognize the work our predecessors have accomplished in building the profession, and we commit ourselves to continuing that work.

(As part of his 2002-2003 “Year of the Member” campaign, the American Osteopathic Association’s Anthony A. Minissale, DO, appointed and charged the Task Force on the Osteopathic Code of Leadership with creating a pledge to help build loyalty within the osteopathic medical profession that begins during day one of osteopathic medical school and continues throughout the osteopathic physician’s career. Over 150 delegates convened in February 2003 for the annual AOA Leadership Conference and endorsed this Osteopathic Pledge of Commitment, as well as identified strategies for promoting the pledge throughout the profession. Subsequently, the AOA Board of Trustees adopted this pledge on February 28, and encouraged its affiliated organizations to assist in its implementation. Hence, the American Academy of Osteopathy’s leadership recommended communication of this initiative to all AAO members at the AAO Convocations and in AAO publications).

• AAO Convocation 2014 Trauma: An Integrative Osteopathic Approach

Osteopathic Education ServiceChairperson Clay Walsh, DO, encourages AAO members to volunteer at least one hour at the Osteopathic Education Service (OES, formerly OD & TE) sessions open to all program participants—physicians, students, guests and exhibitors. The OES will be offered during Convocation from 9:00 am to 11:45 am and 2:15 pm to 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 21 (Exhibit Hall); from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Friday, March 22 (Exihibit Hall); and 9:00 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 23 (Wekiwa 5). Physicians will receive a 1/2 Category 1-B AOA credit for each person they treat. There will also be a drawing at noon on Saturday. For every person a physician treats during OES hours, his/her name will be added to the drawing (e.g., 25 patients, 25 chances to win). The prize is a complimentary registration for the 2014 AAO Convocation in Colorado Springs, CO!

Speaker EvaluationsIn lieu of paper evaluation forms, an e-mail was sent to all participants prior to Convocation containing a link to Survey Monkey. Sessions may be evaluated individually as they are completed, or all at once at the end of Convocation. Your feedback is highly valuable in helping us improve our future programming.

Session Entry and CME DocumentationWhen you check in at the self-service computers across from the registration desk, you will receive a ticket for every session you registered for. These tickets are very important! They are the only way you can gain access to an event. You will turn in the ticket when you enter the room, and it will be scanned at the end of the session to record your CME hours. If your tickets are not deposited in the designated locations, you will not receive CME credit for those sessions. Attendees must also have their badge with them to enter the ballroom for the President’s Banquet. They will not be required to wear their badge throughout the evening, but it will serve as proof that they are registered for this event.

Touro University California, a rapidly growing university offering graduate programs in health sciences and education, has an excellent opportunity for a Chair of OMM Department for Touro University, College of Osteopathic Medicine on our Mare Island campus. The university is part of the Touro College and University System and is located on the northern tip of San Francisco Bay in Vallejo, California. Touro University California is an independent, non-profit Jewish-sponsored institution. It has 1,403 students in three graduate professional colleges (Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Education and Health Sciences).

REPORTS TO: Dean, College of Osteopathic Medicine

POSITION DESCRIPTION:The Chairperson is the academic and administrative leader of the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine department of 6 faculty and 6 student Fellows who serve a class size of 125 students. In addition to these faculty, a highly qualified cadre of community based Osteopathic Physicians participate in the pre-clinical and clinical curricula. Many have national and international reputations that enrich didactic training and further increase the already high faculty to student ratio in the laboratory setting. The Chairperson reports to the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Through his/her authority over the department, the Chairperson is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the department and the long-term development of the department.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Oversight of OMM clinical activity. The Chair of the department is responsible •for the allocation and appropriate participation of faculty to provide clinical care and educational settings. Faculty participation in clinical settings is an important part of the educational and service aspects of TUCOM. The current settings include providing OMM services at the joint TUCOM/Solano County Family Health Services clinic. This clinic has over 30,000 patients and TUCOM provides OMM services full time as OMM specialists. The faculty also provides OMM precepting at the Student Run Free Clinic and other community settings.

The integration of OMM education into the regional clerkships, and in •the future residency education, is important to the mission of TUCOM and the department.In the 2014-15 academic year a new clinical facility will be completed •on campus, which will expand OMM services.

Directing faculty research. TUCOM seeks to be a national leader in •the demonstration of osteopathic manipulative treatment efficacy. The Chairperson is expected to promote a faculty-wide initiative within the department to demonstrate the various ways that osteopathic manipulative treatment improves patient outcomes. The Chairperson will work closely with the Associate Dean for Research and with senior TUC leadership to establish a culture of active research on campus and national identity of the department’s strengths.

Staffing and distribution of curriculum responsibilities. The department provides •a lecture and laboratory sequence in each of the pre-clinical semesters. In the clinical curriculum, the department provides an OMM clerkship and also works with adjunct Osteopathic Physicians to offer a wide range of experiences in preparation for continued use of these principles and practices though the later phases of their education and practice. Integration of OMM and OPP in the clinical curriculum is a high priority for the Chairperson and the department.

Leadership. The Chairperson represents the OMM department in college-•wide leadership councils and standing committees such as Curriculum and Admissions Committees. The Chairperson is responsible for maintaining the

department’s fulfillment of COCA accreditation standards, annual reporting to AACOM and AOA, and for participation in council and committee service at the national level.

Faculty development. In keeping with accreditation standards, TUCOM •provides as much osteopathic principles and philosophy faculty development as possible both within the OMM department and across the college. The Chairperson coordinates and sustains this faculty development program.

QUALIFICATION(S):

Graduate of an AOA accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine.•

AOA board-certified through the American Osteopathic Board of •Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine or have received a Certificate of Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (C-SPOMM).

Three (3) years proven experience in teaching and academic leadership in a •medical education setting.

Demonstrated leadership and productivity in the areas of clinical or professional •service, scholarly activity, medical research or education.

Evidence of successful scholarly and/or research accomplishments.•

Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.•

Applications are reviewed in the order received, and for full consideration should be received prior to 1 April 2014. Finalists will be scheduled for a public presentation and a series of interviews on the TUCOM campus.

Purpose• Promoting continued education in osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) in postgraduate training programs;

• Forming a network for interns and residents interested in OPP;

• Identifying interns and residents at the annual AAO Convocation;

• Providing a platform for intern and resident issues; and

• Strengthening intern and resident representation at the AAO and the American Osteopathic Assocation (AOA).

Lawrence J. Bellew, DO

Dr. Bellew is a third-generation osteopathic physician in a four-generation osteopathic family. He is a 1985 graduate of PCOM and is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice as well as the American Board of Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He has earned and maintains a Recognition of Proficiency in Osteopathy in the Cranial Field. He is a clinical assistant professor in the department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at PCOM. He has been course director of its Osteopathic Cranial Academy–approved 40-hour introductory course to Osteopathy in the Cranial Field since 2006. Dr. Bellew has been in private practice in Claymont, DE, since 1990. His practice is currently limited to the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in treating a wide variety of clinical problems.

Friday, March 21Physician Workshop 5B/6B — Impact Injuries: Description, Diagnosis and Treatment of Four Common Patterns of Viscoelastic ChangeThe four most common impact injuries will be described anatomically. Techniques for diagnosing and treating these utilizing observation, gross motion testing and the PRM will be discussed and, when possible, demonstrated. Given the observed incidence of this type of injury (14% ) it is anticipated that participants will have the opportunity to observe, if not diagnose and treat, an impact injury in their colleagues. A well-developed ability to perceive the PRM is necessary to obtain maximum benefit from this workshop.

As a European osteopath, Dr. Beuckels graduated from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy Westminster University–UK (DO, BSc) and from European School of Osteopathy/Greenwich University–UK (MSc). Dr. Beuckels practices in Belgium and chairs the Department Osteopathic Medicine and Research at the University Witten/Herdecke (Germany). He has been involved in all aspects of osteopathic education for 15 years, working as a senior lecturer, tutor and examiner within many schools in Europe and as a former Clinical Associate Professor at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). Dr. Beuckels is currently finishing his doctorate on integrative osteopathic testing at the University Witten/Herdecke.

Saturday, March 22Physician Workshop 8E — Ariadne’s String in the Rising Labyrinth of Harmonisation after Trauma: An Osteosophical ConceptualisationDr. Beuckels will discuss the local and total shift in form and motion after trauma, giving an overview of the levels of harmonization and how new harmony transforms interactive “neurological” motion in one-way traffic. The workshop will cover defascilitation in the “neurological” girdles, how to bring the patient back to the neurological neutral before treating the local trauma, an introduction to defascilitation procedures while discovering the Ariadne’s string of trauma.

P. Gunnar Brolinson, DO, FAOASM, FAAFP

Dr. Brolinson is Regional Dean for North Carolina, Associate Dean for Clinical Research, Professor of Family and Sports Medicine and the Discipline Chair for Sports Medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia Campus, and team physician for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, and medical director of the VCOM biomechanics lab. He is the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at VCOM and Virginia Tech. He is also a volunteer physician for the United States Olympic Committee and a team physician for the United States Ski Team and was a head team physician for the Freestyle Ski Team at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. He was also named to the medical staff for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC, and was medical director of the USOC performance services center. He obtained his undergraduate training from the University of Missouri at Columbia, earning a degree in biology. A 1983 graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Brolinson is board-certified in family practice and holds subspecialty certification in sports medicine. Prior to moving to Virginia, he was the co-director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship training program at The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, OH, and has extensive experience in post-graduate medical education.

Dr. Buser is a 1981 graduate of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and family practice. He currently serves as Vice President and Dean of the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is also a Professor of Osteopathic Principles and Practices. He previously served as Department Chair, Associate Dean, Interim Dean and Vice President of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Buser is a former Chair of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He was named Educator of the Year by American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American Osteopathic Foundation in 1994. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Maine Osteopathic Association in 1996 and 2007. In 2007, Dr. Buser was also elected by the American Medical Association Board of Trustees to

a position on the Current Procedural Terminology Editorial Panel, the first osteopathic physician to be so elected. He is a member of the Kentucky Institute of Medicine, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, the AOA Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the Osteopathic International Alliance. A Past President of the American Academy of Osteopathy,® Dr. Buser currently serves as Chair of the Nominating Committee and a member of the Board of Governors, International Affairs Committee and Osteopathic Medical Economics Committee. He received the A.T. Still Medallion of Honor in 2010.

Anthony D. Capobianco, DO

Dr. Capobianco earned his DO from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and is board-certified in osteopathic manipulative medicine, family practice and primary care homeopathy. He is currently in general practice in New York. A prolific author, he has had articles published in the American Academy of Osteopathy Journal, The Cranial Letter, and The American Journal of Homeopathic Medicine. Dr. Capobianco is in high demand as a lecturer and clinician, communicating his passion for osteopathy and homeopathy across the country. Together with Dr. Steven Blood, he taught an introductory cranial course for over 25 years to hundreds of students from many schools at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). In 2009 he was awarded the AOA’s Mentor of the Year Award, and in 2014 the same organization bestowed on him the Unsung Heroes award for inspiring excellence in the profession as an outstanding role model. Dr. Capobianco’s Patients’ Choice 5th Annual Award reflects his near perfect ratings five years in a row. In addition to his general practice, Dr. Capobianco holds positions as adjunct faculty at UNECOM and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM); and OMM residency training faculty at Southampton Hospital in New York. Millicent King Channell, DO, FAAO

Dr. Channell is a 2001 graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Devine is the osteopathic representative to the Arizona Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee, and serves the Health Services Advisory Group as a consultant on OMM case investigation and review. He serves as the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association (AOMA) District 1 Representative and as President of the Arizona Academy of Osteopathy. He is a member of the AAO Education Committee and the Student American Academy of Osteopathy Chapter Advisor for AZCOM. Dr. Devine has received numerous educational and service awards, including the Littlejohn Award—the highest honor bestowed on MWU professors. He has also received the Top Educator Award from MWU and the Excellence in Osteopathic Medical Education Award from the AOMA.

Dr. Dowling is a 1989 graduate of NYCOM, and is board-certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM) and family practice. He specializes in OMT in private practice in Syosset, NY, and is the Director of Manipulation in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Nassau University Medical Center in Long Island, NY. Thursday, March 20Physician Workshop 2A/3A — OMT & Physics to Reverse the Damage of TraumaPatients often present with histories of trauma that precede their complaints of neuromusculoskeletal disorder. An additional history and physical examination, including osteopathic structural examination, can be utilized to develop treatments to assist in reversing the condition. The workshop will focus on applying osteopathic principles by addressing the findings through a variety of modalities in a synthesizing fashion while also addressing the other mind and spirit components of the person.




Wayne R. English, DO

Dr. English received his DO degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, in 1958. After several years of family practice, Dr. English entered the postdoctoral fellowship program at KCOM focusing on rehabilitation medicine. From his current position as clinical professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. English is highly sought after as a visiting lecturer, consultant and team physician. He participates as a member of several boards and task forces, including as crew chief for the Athletics Congress of the U.S. for the purpose of drug screening at national events and as an AOA representative to the AMA’s Committee on Development of Parameters and Practice Protocols. Sharon Gustowski, DO

Dr. Gustowski is a 2001 graduate of the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC-TCOM) and the School of Public Health and is board-certified in NMM/OMM. She was a founding faculty member in the Department of OMM at Touro University Nevada–COM in 2004. While in Nevada, she also served as president of the Nevada Osteopathic Medical Association. She is past chair of AAO’s membership committee and participates on the Osteopathic Principles and Practices Committee of the NBOME. She now serves as vice president for District II of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. Since 2011, Dr. Gustowski has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of OMM at UNTHSC-TCOM where she designs and delivers curriculum as the second-year OMM courses director. She also has a clinical practice with a focus on treating pediatric patients. When not busy using cranial osteopathy or teaching students,

Stefan Hagopian, DO, FAAO, will lecture on Detecting the Physiologic Processes of Hidden Trauma. Dr. Hagopian, a graduate of UNECOM, is board-certified in NMM/OMM. But in the science of osteopathy we seek to find cause. In our search, we often find the root cause of illness in some type of trauma, persistent yet hidden—a more primary aspect in a chain of cause and effect. In this lecture, we will take a functional approach, to look at some of the commonly forgotten aspects of trauma: vector forces which precede any sequelae to the trauma and which can persist as palpable force factors in a patient’s body. We will examine trauma as a living process distinct from effects which may follow.

Friday, March 21Physician Workshop 5A/6A — Treating Functionally Persistent TraumaThere is a reason we call osteopathic lesions “somatic dysfunctions”—with the emphasis on the noun “dysfunctions”—rather than “functional dys-somatics.” In osteopathic practice we are ultimately more concerned with correcting dysfunctions than with changing or aligning the somatic form alone. Trauma often persists as a living process. In this lab session, we will examine functional aspects of trauma as we step beyond protocol-driven care to build a perception-based methodology for clinical care.

Saturday, March 22Physician Lecture 7A — Anatomy of Cranial Dural Changes as Functional Results of TraumaRelating anatomical findings to functional aspects of trauma, we will work from structural effects of trauma to their possible causal influences, particularly the interplay in motion between anatomical structures of varying plasticity. Practitioners are accustomed to studying the effects of trauma, and, in fact, most pathology, via snapshots. In this lecture, demonstrating that a true osteopathic approach is anything but static, we will study snapshots of structure with an eye toward functional forces that can precede structural change.

Dr. Huzij is a KCOM graduate and completed a combined residency in family practice and psychiatry in Washington, D.C. After serving nine years in the U.S. Air Force he completed an NMM/OMM Plus One residency at UNE. He is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists. His interests include faith and medicine as well as the interface of mental health and manual medicine. Dr. Keys has a passion for osteopathy and its relationship to nutritional and functional medicine. After being born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, CA, she completed her undergraduate training in Santa Barbara, CA. She then found her way to New York for medical school where she completed her DO at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her training she completed an additional year as a pre-doctoral fellow in osteopathic manipulative medicine and completed an MS in neuromusculoskeletal medicine. She earned first-place in the annual A. Hollis Wolf Case Competition during 2010 AAO Convocation. Dr. Keys then completed her training in family medicine at Southampton Hospital in Southampton, NY, where she was awarded Family Medicine Resident of the year in 2013. She is currently completing her NMM plus one year in Southampton, NY, and has had the opportunity to do extensive training in nutritional and functional medicine—training with some of the most influential physicians in the field. She currently teaches a course in nutritional medicine to the residents and students at Southampton Hospital. Michael L. Kuchera, DO, FAAODr. Kuchera graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he later served as Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), OMM Residency Director, Vice President for International Osteopathic Research and Education, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean. He then directed the OMM Research and Human Performance and Biomechanics Laboratory at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and was Clinical Director of the Center for Chronic Disorders of Aging. Dr. Kuchera recently took the position of Chair of the OMM Department at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Kuchera represents the United States in the International Federation of Manual/ Musculoskeletal Medicine, for which he serves as Secretary General. He has been invited to lecture in Europe, Japan and Australia and is a founding member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Bureau on International Osteopathic Medical Education and Affairs (BIOMEA). Dr. Laseter graduated from Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1990. His primary osteopathic influences were Robert C. Fulford, DO, FCA, and Herbert C. Miller, DO, FAAO, FCA. Other major influences were his work with Issam Nemeh, MD, of Cleveland, Ohio, and several masters of Chinese Internal Arts, especially Grandmaster Sam Tam of Vancouver, Canada. He is the founder and director of the Mid-Atlantic Osteopathic Study Group and holds faculty appointments with osteopathic colleges on both coasts. He has lectured for the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation and the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. He has served as an OMM hospitalist, has been board-certified in NMM/OMM and family practice and has completed a pediatric internship and family medicine residency. Patricia M. Meyer, DO

Dr. Meyer is a 2005 graduate of the UNTHSC-COM. She received a MS degree in Clinical Research and Education in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine from UNTHSC while completing a year-long pre-doctoral fellowship in OMM. Frank Mueller, MD, DO

Dr. Mueller graduated from the medical school at Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany, in 1993 with residency training at several hospitals in orthopedic surgery with a sport-trauma specialization. Currently in private practice in Duesseldorf, Germany, since 2003, Dr. Mueller is board-certified in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, manual medicine, acupuncture and physical therapy. He did his post-graduate-training in osteology, receiving a DO-DAAO in osteopathic medicine from the German American Academy of Osteopathy (DAAO) in 2004 with successful completion of examinations at PCOM in Philadelphia, PA. He also has earned a Diploma in Osteopathic Medicine (DOM) from the European Register of Osteopathic Physicians (EROP) in 2010.

Thursday, March 20Physician Workshop 2E — Treating Injury Shock after TraumaTrauma disrupts the body in many ways. It compromises the musculoskeletal, vascular and lymphatic systems. One of the most devastating aspects of trauma is how profoundly it disrupts the nervous system, compromising the autonomic nervous system’s balance and the cranial rhythmic impulse. I call that disruption injury shock. Until injury shock is addressed and the autonomic nervous system returned to balance, the body’s ability to heal is severely compromised. For me, treating injury

shock is a critical aspect of treating trauma. In these sessions, I will focus on three to four techniques that I have found key to releasing injury shock: Dr. Fulford’s abdominal diaphragm release, rebalancing the ANS by treating the mid-thoracic, sacrum and OA junction, and calming CNS irritability through a version of the CV4 that even practitioners not trained in Cranial Osteopathy can use.

Dr. Stiles, a 1965 graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an internship at Waterville Hospital in Waterville, ME. From 1968 to 1973, he took over and ran the practice of internationally-recognized osteopathic physician Perrin T. Wilson, DO, in Cambridge, MA. In 1973, he established the first hospital-based OMT service in the country at Waterville Osteopathic Hospital, where he served as Director until 1978. He then established an OMT practice in Norman, OK, and served as Professor and Chair of the Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) department at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. John P. Tortu, DO

Dr. Tortu earned his DO degree as a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (’00). While at PCOM, Dr. Tortu was awarded the O.J. Snyder Undergraduate OMM Fellowship as well as honored with the Eimerbrink Award for Osteopathic Excellence. In May 2006 he earned his Board Certification in NMM/OMM. His undergraduate work was completed at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, and his postgraduate work was completed in the Kennedy Health System of the University of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Osteopathic Medicine. Friday, March 22Physician Lecture 4A — VSR – Viscero Somatic ReleasePhysician Workshop 5D/6D — VSR – Osteopathic Evaluation and Treatment of Lower Extremity Injuries with Regard to the Urogenital and Hepatic SystemsThis workshop deepens the knowledge gained in the lecture by evaluating the effects of myriad and common lower extremity injuries as the fascial origin of dysfunction of certain organs of excretion, specifically, the kidney and urinary bladder and the liver and gallbladder. Old, lower extremity injury causes fascially-mediated restriction and irritation of the end organ via deposition of shockwave injury patterns along the associated meridian. This triggers a mechanicotransduction of increasing fascial tone into increasing afferent CNS tone, via the viscero somatic reflex arc, triggering the increased efferent tone responsible for the somatic complaints we commonly see: somatic dysfunctions of the lower extremity, pelvis and lumbosacral regions as well as the commonly-known, autonomically mediated somatic dysfunctions found along dermatomally connected somatic regions. Osteopathic evaluation and treatment of these old injury patterns with respect to the specific organ dysfunction releases the aberrant, fascially-mediated tone, decreasing afferent CNS tone and, by reflex, decreases efferent CNS tone, releasing the somatic complaints associated with the injury pattern and improving the function of these organs.




Frank H. Willard, PhD

Dr. Willard earned a PhD in anatomy from the University of Vermont. He is a professor in the anatomy department at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was named Professor of the Year in 1989. That same year, he was selected as the AAO Visiting Scholar. Dr. Willard is a current member of the Society of Neuroscience, Sigma Xi, the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience, the International Brain Research Organization and the American College of Neuropsychiatrists. He is the author of Medical Neuroanatomy: A Problem-Oriented Manual with Annotated Atlas and Nociception and the Neuroendocrine-Immune Connection. Dr. Willard is an honorary member of the AAO.

Member BenefitsThe AAO provides many benefits for its members. While these may not be readily quantified with a dollar value, the AAO represents its members interests in a variety of ways:

• Advocacy, in cooperation with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) within the osteopathic and allopathic professions, as well as before healthcare reformers and policymakers, including appropriate reimbursement for OMM services.

• Development of osteopathic skills side-by-side with colleagues, many of whom are the most sought after teachers of OMM and palpatory diagnosis in the world.

• Support of research on the efficacy of OMM.• Patient access to physician members who practice OMM through a searchable online directory.• Assurance of the future of the profession by supporting chapters of the Student American Academy of

Osteopathy on the campuses of all colleges of osteopathic medicine.• The American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine– the only certifying board for manual

medicine in the medical world today, accepts, without challenge, all courses sponsored by the AAO.• Access to Practice Management Webinars.• Opportunity for DOs and osteopathic students to participate in a mentorship program.• Ability to create, develop and manage postgraduate residency opportunities via the Postdoctoral Standards

and Evaluations Committee.• Promotion of the philosophy of osteopathic medicine internationally.• Maintenance of an earned Fellowship program to recognize excellence in OMM. Fellowship in the AAO is

open to DOs who are certified in any AOA specialty.

Who May Attend?

The primary educational objective of the AAO is to provide programs aimed to improve understanding of philosophy and diagnostic/manipulative skills for AAO members, DOs who are not AAO members, individuals who are licensed for the unlimited scope and practice of medicine, and for those in programs leading to such licensure.

Another educational objective of the AAO is to provide programs aimed to improve understanding of manual techniques for licensed health care professionals within their respective scopes of practice. Enrollment in a class or classes is not a substitute for completion of education and training in a college of osteopathic medicine, and simply taking a course or courses in manual techniques does not provide the necessary training and skills to prac-tice osteopathic manipulative treatment and/or osteopathic manipulative medicine. Cancellation & Refund PolicyThe American Academy of Osteopathy® reserves the right to cancel an educational program if an insufficient number of physicians register. Sufficient registrations must be received 30 days prior to the opening of the course. If you are considering registering for a course less than 30 days prior to the opening, contact the Academy office before making travel plans. In the event of course cancellation due to lack of registrations, all registration money will be refunded.

Cancellations from participants received in writing and signed 30 or more days before the course opening may receive an 80 percent refund of their registration fee.

For cancellations received in writing less than 30 days before the course opening, registrants may transfer 80 percent of their registration fee to another course to be held within the next 12 months. Registrants who fail to appear for an AAO program can transfer up to 50 percent of their registration fee to another AAO educational program to be held within the next 12 months if a written and signed explanation is received at the AAO office within 10 days of the scheduled course. All other cancellations will receive no refund or transfer of registration fees.


Course Description

This course will outline a manipulative approach to common sports medicine injuries and conditions of the spine, upper extremity and lower extremity. The program will have a balanced content of didactic material and hands-on OMT workshops.

Course Objectives

• The participant will review diagnosis and treatment of common athletic injuries of the spine and upper and lower extremity.

• The participant will perfect his/her palpatory diagnosis of somatic dysfunction of othe spine and upper and lower extremity.

• Theparticipantswilllearnthreetofiveosteopathicma-nipulative thechinques for each region and how and when to tuilize them in the athletic population.

FacultyMark McKeigue, DO, graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977 and completed internship and residency programs at Chicago Osteopathic Hospital. He is currently in family practice in Orland Park, IL.

Course DirectorsSajid A. Surve, DO, is a 2005 graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–School of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing a traditional rotating internship at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, PA, he became an inaugural resident, and the first Chief Resident, of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, NY. He joined the faculty of UMDNJSOM in 2009 and completed an NMM/OMM residency in 2010.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed for physicians who are novices at sonographic guidance for injections. Under the direction of physiatrist Sajid Surve, DO, course participants will be introduced to the basic principles of ultrasound, learn proper injection techniques with ultrasound guidance and learn proper billing and coding for this procedure. Cadavers will be available for practice, and table trainers will facilitate a low faculty-to-participant ratio. The course will focus on the injection of the major joints: glenohumeral, sacroiliac, hip and knee.

Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:• apply the basic principles of musculoskeletal ultrasound;• comfortably navigate the necessary equipment required

for sonographic guidance of injections;• utilize proper injection techniques under sonographic

guidance for the glenohumeral, sacroiliac, hip and knee joints;

• bill, code and document correctly for ultrasound-guided injections; and

• avoid common pitfalls associated with the above procedures.
