San Francisco is located on the west coast at the

north end of the San Francisco Peninsula and is perched atop

hills and filled-in marshes. Originally a Spanish mission, it was

conquered by the United States in 1846 and by prospectors

following the 1848 discovery of gold. The gold rush made San

Francisco into a metropolis with a frontier edge. However,

the great 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed most of the

city, but not it’s momentum. Now, San Francisco is a center

of wealth, military power, progressive culture, and high

technology.

The city is laid out in a grid over more than 40 hills,

reaching heights of nearly 1,000 feet. The Pacific air keeps

the temperatures moderate, usually ranging from 45-75

degrees Fahrenheit, leading San Francisco to be called “the air

-conditioned city.” The climate of San Francisco is similar to

that of the Mediterranean. The fog of San Francisco is most

common during summer months, coming off the ocean and

backing up against the hills. However, this fog disappears just

as quickly as it appears.

The nearby San Andreas and Hayward Faults are

responsible for quite a bit of earthquake activity, although

neither reside within city limits. Due to the threat of

earthquakes, buildings in San Francisco have been built to withstand the event and to minimalize damage to the

city.
