COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION
COMPARTMENT # RMU KEY VALUE REVIEW DATE 110 207 H/V-timber intensive 1/24/2001 YOE ACRES COUNTY REVISION DATE 2002 2355 Kalkaska 2/06/2008 for the
Red Pine Project Stand Examiner: Donna Hagan updated by Patrick L. Potter for the Red Pine Project Legal Description: T27N,R5W,Sec. 1-5 Political Township: Bear Lake North Terrain: Flat to undulating, mostly well drained. Soil Types: Blue Lake, Kalkaska & Rubicon sands. 1. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use Around the Compartment: Compartment
is surrounded by mixture of state and private land. Private land is mostly recreational use. 2. Unique Natural Features: One special concern and one threatened species and/or plant listed
in this compartment. 3. Archeological, Historical and Cultural Features: No archaeological features listed on the site
list. 4. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Red Pine Project
• The main goal of the Red Pine Project is to adjust and balancing the red pine cover-type age-class distribution by harvesting red pine timber stands in the 40-79 year age-classes and regenerating areas to red pine. A. Forest Development Fund Stands: 21, 50, 54 B. Old Growth Stands: C. Other
5. Resource Management Unit Considerations (RMU):
A. Other Compartments in RMU: 108,110,111,208 B. RMU Acreage: 7960 C. Management Considerations: Intensive management will be in northern hardwoods,
which will be managed on a selection basis. Maintain age class diversity in the intolerant types.
6. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations:
A. Past Fisheries Division (FD) activities within compartment: Surveyed in 1968. Wild brook trout present. Surveys in adjacent sections 1958 and 1966 also found wild brook trout.
B. Current FD activities within compartment: None. C. Proposed FD activities within compartment: None.
Compt. # 110_RPP .Doc Page 2 of 3
D. General fisheries/watershed concerns: 1. Special or unique habitat/species: Wild brook trout. 2. Completed watershed plans: Manistee River Assessment, Rozich, 1998. 3. Past work of projects: None. 4. Special designations: The Manistee River is a candidate for State Natural Rivers
Designation. Therefore, there is a 100-155’ buffer for Goose Creek. No logging should take place within that buffer. Goose Creek is also a Designated Trout Stream.
5. Specific concerns by stands: Stand 12: Fisheries Division concurs with Wildlife that since the flooding is not functioning as desired, the dike should be removed and the wetland returned to its original natural level. This was a recommended course of action in the Manistee River Assessment (Rozich, 1998). This action should make Goose Creek into a better trout stream, as well as positively affecting the Manistee River itself. Stand 401: Will there be a need to till in order to plant rye?
7. Priority Wildlife Species: Emphasize species associated with mature, closed-canopy deciduous
forests, such as scarlet tanager, wood thrush, gray fox, blue-spotted salamander, and wild turkey where mast trees are present. Wetlands and lowland conifer forests provide habitat for species such as great blue heron, white-tailed deer, common yellowthroat, black bear, and swamp sparrow. Oak-pine-aspen forests and barrens provide habitat for species such as gray squirrel, black-and-white warbler, badger, broad-winged hawk, pine warbler and hog-nosed snake.
8. Wildlife Habitat Objectives: This compartment is quite diverse in landform. Sections 3 and 4,
the west ½ of section 2, and part of section 5 fall in an ice-contact ridge area (LTA 3121). Mature northern hardwood forest occupies hills and ridges forming a large block of contiguous deciduous forest cover, which should be maintained as such. Selective harvests should incorporate maintenance of tree species diversity (particularly hemlock and beech), creation of canopy gaps, retention of some cavity trees, and creation of down logs as habitat structure. Conifer components present in the past are largely absent now, but a few spruce plantings complement the northern hardwood dominated uplands. Additional conifer plantings (preferably red or white pine, or hemlock if possible) on old oil well sites on hills may help to stabilize these sites. Grassy or brushy draws fall between the ridges and some have been planted to conifer. These draws can be maintained in semi-open habitat with a fruiting shrub component through periodic harvest or burning. Outwash channels along the Goose Creek floodplain (LTAs 5521, 5549) cover section 1 and the east ½ of section 2. Well-drained soils harbor oak-aspen-pine forest and upland brush openings. Diverse habitat conditions there should be maintained via periodic harvesting or burning. Final harvests should retain residual trees and snags. Poorly drained soils along Goose Creek should be maintained in lowland conifer forest and wetlands. The Goose Creek wildlife flooding should be de-commissioned by removing the dike and allowing the wetland return to it’s original level, as the dike is a maintenance liability and the flooding is not providing useful waterfowl habitat as intended.
9. Oil and Gas Facilities: No wells or facilities in this comparment 10. Mineral Management Objectives:
MINERAL RESOURCES Surface sediments consist of ice-contact and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. Glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 800 feet. There is nearly 200 feet of local relief within the compartment. Beneath the Glacial Drift is the Mississippian Coldwater Shale. The Coldwater does not have an economic use. The nearest gravel pit is within one mile to the northwest in Section 31 T28N R5W. Gravel potential in the compartment is considered good, especially the western uplands. This area is located south of the Niagaran reef trend and
Compt. # 110_RPP .Doc Page 3 of 3
the Antrim Shale gas play. None of the land in the compartment is currently leased for oil and gas development. Lease auction nominations include land in Section 7. Sections 3, 4 and 5 are surface only.
11. Ownership Adjustments: A. Recommended land acquisitions: None listed. B. Recommended land disposals: None listed.
12. Vehicle Access:
A. Road and bridge needs: None B. Road closures: See road map. All closures will be bermed.
13. Survey Needs:
A. Immediate needs: None. B. Trespass needs: C. Long term management needs:
14. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Approximately 3 miles of the Kalkaska ORV Route
and Blue Bear Snowmobile Trail run throught the compartment. Only 1/4 mile of hardwood thinning runs along the trail. Approximately 2 miles of the Kalkaska Cycle Trail runs through the West 1/2 and the East 1/2 of the compartment. Again only 1/4 mile of hardwood thinning runs along the Western part of the trail.
15. Fire Protection: Have not had a history of fires in the area. Access is always a concern. If road
closings were proposed fire would like to be part of the process.

2008 - Hagan - Red Pine Project Final Harvest. Leave any oak and scattered cherry. ORV Trail runs through stand. Retention around V type. 2000 - Part of stand was seeded to red pine close to Goose Creek Road. Did not take very well. Try underplanting with red pine. In areas of heavy red pine don't plant and thin areas that need it. 2005 Update comments KGR: Stand was thinned in fall and early winter 2004. Sale #078-02-01 Goose Creek Red, 138 acres.
