Editor’s welcome

Despite being next to each other in the calendar, December and January couldn’t be more different. The first is a mad whirl of shopping, preparing for guests, eating too many mince pies,

tracking down the perfect party dress, trying to walk

through slush in unsuitable

shoes and

wondering why you seem to have ended up with a bigger pile of crushed up wrapping paper than presentsthis year.

January is all about wondering if you’ll ever be finished hoovering up glitter and pine needles, regretting the size of our credit card bills and making resolutions that we’ll have broken before February is out.

As usual, we’re here to help you make the most of the season and the opportunities the new year presents.

Whether you’re looking for a new look for your Christmas party, cool ideas for presents, or fancy getting away for a few days, it’s all here. We’ve got the tastiest food, great ideas for what to do with the family, the latest way of getting sleek and shiny hair, brilliant new music, fast cars and the ultimate girlie weekend up for grabs.

It might be dark outside, but things are always brighter with Trend!

Have a great time,Alison

It’s a man’s world in the beauty business now for Aberdeen aesthetics expert, Jan Leiper.

More and more of the male species, no longer shy about improving their looks, are calling on her unique expertise to reduce crow’s feet and frown lines and keep them cool under pressure.

From tradesmen to businessmen and sportsmen, they’re queuing up at her Innocent Aesthetics clinics for injectable facial line softening using Botox.Jan, a nurse prescriber, offers a range of skin and body rejuvenation treatments, including scar rejuvenation using Dermal roller, and has male clients of all ages, some in their 20s.

“Botox is particularly popular with them and hyperhidrosis treatment, using Botox to reduce perspiration in the sweat glands, is amazing,” she says. “It’s great for high-pressure events like business presentations, when you need to stay cool and calm. We adhere strictly to patient confidentiality and respect the highest standards of client privacy, so their secret is safe with us.” Contact Jan on 0773 488 9652www.innocentaesthetics.co.ukfacebook - innocent aesthetics ltd

There are words my mother thinks I don’t know. Most of them were unleashed when I got an e-mail containing the words “Alison will have a Brazilian”. On closer reading, I discovered that the Brazilian in question was Eclipse Hair Design’s special keratin treatment, BEOX, the secret to silky smooth locks.

If I’m having a bad hair day, I look like one of those little plastic troll dolls, so when Eclipse promised that I could have sleek, manageable and shiny hair for up to four months with little effort on my part, I headed straight for Torphins.

Eclipse is the first salon in the city and shire to offer the BEOX process, which strengthens and conditions the hair by locking into the hair’s own keratin and sealing the cuticle. The process is simple, but very labour intensive. After the hair is washed and dried, Eclipse stylists Karen and Tracie take small sections of hair and massage in the BEOX cream. After 15 minutes processing time, they blow dry and straighten the hair, again in tiny little sections. It takes around two to four hours.

Most treatments of this type involve a 48 hour period where you can’t wash your hair, tie it back, tuck it behind your ears or get it wet. This would drive me insane, so it’s fortunate that the BEOX process requires just 24 hours before stage two begins and you can return to the salon for a wash and blow dry to finish the styling or do it yourself using recommended styling products.

BEOX works best on medium to long hair, with prices from £120 upwards.

So, does it work? Yes, yes, yes. See for yourself. I haven’t had a single troll hair day so far!

Glamour GirlsShe would have been just as happy as a 1930’s starlet, swanning around in bias cut satin, a fur stole slung over her shoulder, for she adores old-fashioned glamour and is now on a mission to bring it back to women’s wardrobes – with a 21st century edge.

Her Cults boutique, Papillon, is oozing with modern classics with a hint of retro and the accessories to match – elegant black with a bit of bling, beautiful beaded and pearl collars, satin peep toes in jewel colours, or 60’s monochrome inspired by Quant.

“People don’t wear hats and gloves like they used to, but I just love that era when people got dressed up and women looked as if they’d made a real effort,” explained Fiona.

“We’ve become really casual but there’s no reason you can’t dress beautifully for any occasion – why do you have to wear an ancient fleece and trainers to walk the dog?”

It may be cold outside, she says, but it’s no excuse and clever layering can work wonders, from pretty thermal undies to a gorgeous gilet and sequinned leggings under a stylish coat, great boots and snood. Top it off with Jackie O sunglasses and channel your inner movie siren.

Just cosy faux fur cuffs and a lace-lined fur collar, strewn with ivory pearls, can lift a plain jacket from drab to fab.

Fiona and team – managers Susan Gibb and Mary Robertson – are your personal

s

stylists and new best friends rolled into one, instinctively choosing your perfect new pieces from ranges including Ronen Chen, Betty Barclay, Joseph Ribkoff and Italian label Moovy, plus new addition, Angel Alarcon shoes and bags, insisting: “We’re determined to celebrate feminine glamour again.”

For over 100 years the Broadstraik Inn has been everything a country pub should be – the friendly hub of the community, a place to gather, gossip, eat and celebrate. Today it’s all that and a little bit more.

More and more firms are using the Broadstraik for conferences, seminars, training days and meetings. The historic inn is ideally situated in Elrick, by Westhill and just a few miles from Aberdeen.

From breakfast meetings, to private dining for clients, staff functions or confidential committees, the expert Broadstraik team, headed by general manager Lesley Hardie, provide a first-class service, tailored to meet corporate requirements.

“Our delegate packages are totally flexible - we can do anything from half-day to all-day room rental, providing projector and screen, plus a range of food options including full Scottish breakfast, two-course lunch or buffet selection, using local, seasonal produce”, Lesley explains.

“Both our suites have private entrances and can be used individually or together, with one providing a linked break-out area. After the work is done you can relax in the bar or lounge. Whatever the occasion, we guarantee it’ll be the business.”

It’s not often that business travellers get four star accommodation and service at two star prices, but that’s exactly what the newly opened Lairhillock Lodge at Netherley offers weary travellers.

The lodge is ideally located for business travellers visiting the industrial estates in Tullos, Altens, Portlethen and Stonehaven, while tourists benefit from being close to the coast, Deeside and the mountains.

The spacious rooms are decorated in a tasteful palette of charcoal greys and neutrals and each has a large ensuite shower room, with plenty of fluffy towels and covetable toiletries.

Typically, owners Jenny and Neil have thought of every comfort, with the rooms featuring dimmable lighting, irons, tea and coffee facilities, wi-fi and, unlike most hotels, hairdryers with sufficient drying power.

“We see it as an entirely new take on Bed and Breakfast,” explained Jenny. “People can have all their home comforts, enjoy a nice meal out, get a great night’s sleep and have a wonderful cooked breakfast to set them up for the day.” From the personal welcome, through to the work the family’s children are doing on putting together information on local attractions, everything is outstandingly well done.

Breakfast comes in the form of an extensive buffet offering traditional Scottish cooked options or a lighter approach with yogurts, cereal and fruit; better yet, it’s included in the room price. When it comes to other meals, most guests will take advantage of the renowned Lairhillock Inn which is located right next door, or venture out to restaurants in Stonehaven or Aberdeen.

Although the Lairhillock Inn is separately owned, the two businesses have already established a very neighbourly relationship, with the Lodge’s facilities complimenting the Inn’s conference, wedding and function business by providing a great place to stay right next door.

Sunshine, showers and the ever-changing colours of Aberdeenshire in autumn made for a scenic 45 minute drive to the grand Kildrummy Castle Country House Hotel just in time for Sunday lunch.

Aperifs and canapés are served in the oak- panelled bar overlooking the ruins of the nearby 13th century Kildrummy Castle . There’s a good selection of champagne and other cocktails. I chose a Portonic – white port served over ice and topped up with tonic water.

The 4-course Sunday lunch menu at £28 per head offers a varied selection throughout.

I began with 4 expertly seared scallops, deliciously sweet and served with a moreish garlic, cream and brandy sauce, and stole a taste of grilled asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with a buttery tarragon sauce.

The soup course gave a choice of Scotch broth or game consommé. It’s a long time since I’ve seen consommé on a menu and it didn’t disappoint.

For the main event, I enjoyed a juicy, plump grilled duck breast served with an aromatic compote-like berry, orange and cinnamon sauce whilst my partner got stuck into a generous creamy beef stroganoff, and my son a chicken breast stuffed with haggis, wrapped in bacon and served with aturnip cream.

Desserts were spot on - an apple, raisin and cinnamon crumble, a decadent chocolate fondant and a rich, crispy caramel topped crème brulee.

Lunch time entertainment was provided on the lawn by abundant bird life and acrobatic red squirrels vying for pole position on the bird feeder. After lunch, we settled into the comfy sofas in the relaxing drawing room for coffee and petit-fours.

This is how Sunday lunch should be – unhurried, with good food , friendly and attentive service in stunning surroundings – what more do you need?

restaurant reviews

the Courtyard

Just like its sister restaurant, La Stella, The Courtyard is tucked away on a quaint, cobbled lane giving it character and a somewhat Continental feel.

As soon as we entered the doors of The Courtyard we were greeted with a warm welcome from restaurant manager James, who took our coats and showed us toour seats.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have Blue Moon beer on tap, which was my favourite drink while living in the US. However, on this occasion both my mum and I opted for a glass of the house Sauvignon Blanc.

The Creations menu at The Courtyard is a carefully crafted menu which changes

regularly to offer the finest produce of each season. After taking one look at it I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to make a decision with so many great choices.

After placing our order we were served a delicious amuse-bouche of haggis bon bon with a whiskey mayonnaise to tempt our taste buds. To start I chose the duck on toast, a full flavoured mix of confit duck leg and Scottish wild mushrooms on toast alongside a delicate radicchio salad and a perfectly poached duck egg. Mum opted for the large pot of mussels cooked in a creamy garlic sauce with pancetta and pear cider, giving it a perfect sweet and salty balance.

To follow we were presented with a strawberry lime sorbet to cleanse our palettes for the main course. My choice for main came from the daily fish specials, a tender tuna steak marinated in lime, orange and tequila on a bed of ribbon

vegetables, topped with two light and crisp crab and ginger spring rolls served with a side of golden couscous and drizzled with a sweetcorn and chilli relish. Mum went for a classic dish with a modern twist, the posh scampi, which were meaty pieces of crispy bread crumbed monkfish served with a stack of freshly fried chips and a tart and tangy homemade tartar sauce.

Unfortunately neither of us could manage dessert but it only gives us another reason to return as well as the changing menu and perhaps for a glass of cool, refreshing Blue Moon beer.

Tell us a bit about how you got started as a chef, and how you came to be in your present role?I was in retail management and quite unhappy. A French chef friend opened his Bistro in Paris and I gave up things to help him get started. After working in Paris I decided I wanted to learn to cook seriously. On returning to the UK I approached John Webber at Kinnaird in Perthshire - he took me on as a commis and the rest is history, as they say.

I met Ian Sinclair over a year ago and we both agreed that Inverurie missed a really good restaurant. We are trying to do something a bit different. It’s been a low key approach with minimum advertising and mostly people are learning about us by word of mouth, and it’s going really well.

What’s the best thing about your job? And the worst? The best part of the job is walking into a clean kitchen early in the morning and having the freedom to be creative. The worst part is being so busy that you don’t get time to be creative.

What’s your signature dish?I am happy to say I don’t have one. I am always frightened of being labelled and put in a box. I’ve worked abroad as a chef for many years and my journey with food is all about authenticity. Going to a country, learning how they do it and bringing it back. I don’t really do “with twist” or signature.

How do you relax when you’re out of the kitchen?Easy, I have a five-year-old son and we have a lot of fun when I am not in the kitchen. At the moment it’s autumn, so it’s off to the forest. My wife Ingrida, is an expert mushroom and berry picker.

If you could invite anyone in the world, from anytime real or fictional, who would you invite to dinner?A good dinner party would have to include Grace Jones, Bridget Bardot, Oriana Fallaci, Bill Hicks, Joe Strummer and me. That would be fun.

What three ingredients would you take to a desert island?A block of Parmesan cheese, a bunch of lemons and two kilos of garlic.

Which chef do you most admire and why?My favourite chef is Dario Cecchini. He is actually a butcher from Tuscany who makes beautiful things with pigs and cows. He is also a poet and general genius.

RecipeRecently I started making peanut butter ice cream to go with my spiced doughnuts, and saffron crème brulee. People are crazy for it. You don’t need an ice cream machine, so anyone can do it if you have a Kenwood or Kitchen aid. You can also use this recipe as a basic vanilla ice cream if you omit the peanut butter.

My five-year-old son likes to eat these with homemade choc chip cookies.

Peanut Butter ice creamIngredients:250g egg yolks200g caster sugar1 vanilla pod scraped or a teaspoon of essence750ml double cream 400g crunchy peanut butter (Skippy is best)

1. Whisk egg yolks, sugar and vanilla until really thick: about 5 minutes, high speed.2. Scrape with spatula into mixing bowl.3. Return mixing bowl, pour in cream and whisk until just thick. Don’t overdo it as it will make the ice cream hard.4. Fold very gently some peanut butter into the egg yolk mix, then a third of the cream. Repeat the process until everything is gently folded together.5. Pour into your preferred container and freeze.

I sometimes add a good shot of Baileys at stage four. It’s a great combination.

life is

suite...The Trend Awards don’t feature a category for the biggest, most comfortable hotel beds in Aberdeen, but if we did then the new suites at the Bauhaus would be a shoo-in. Each of the suites is individually designed to take advantage of the layout of the building, with some suites featuring double walk-in showers, giant flat screen TVs and iPod docking stations.

The Bauhaus’s central location makes it a great base for the business or leisure traveller, with car parking available at Strawberry Bank Parade and the city’s night life on the doorstep. Many visitors prefer to stay in and enjoy a great meal at Grant’s restaurant followed by a nightcap or two in the stylish lobby bar. Some never feel the need to leave the cocoon of their rooms and opt for the freshly prepared room service menu.

You don’t need to stay over to enjoy the Bauhaus experience. The hotel also offers a conference suite which features a state of the art projector and automated screens, whiteboards, flipcharts and really comfy chairs. It seats up to sixty people theatre- style or twenty five in a horse-shoe formation.

There’s even an open plan kitchen area where delegates can enjoy teas, coffees, water and soft drinks as well as specially designed menu options from fresh morning pastries to more substantial buffet lunches. The facilities are competitively priced, meaning you get a lot for your money and the standard of facilities will mean your delegates are happy throughout the day.

So whether you opt to hold a business event, put up staff in a comfortable and central location, or decide to check in for a luxurious weekend break, the staff at the Bauhaus will look after you impeccably. At Bauhaus, life is suite..

Rarely do you meet people as passionate about coffee as Alex Jackson of the Naked Bean.

Costa, Starbucks, Cafe Nero, the Naked Bean... If Alex has his way his brand will one day be on the lips of the most discerning coffee drinker.

Although this enthusiasm hasn’t always been the case: “I used to take my coffee white with two sugars, not really giving much thought to the taste of individual blends,” reflects Alex.

“It wasn’t until I was made a coffee using freshly roasted and ground beans that I became hooked. I was totally blown away.”

Now Alex, who used to sell coffee for Mars, has his own coffee and tea brands – the Naked Bean and the Naked Leaf - and supplies his unique blend of beans and leaves from his Aberdeenshire base.

Such is Alex’s obsession for the perfect cup of coffee he even provides clients with training from one of the UK’s top barrister judges. “A bad product will always give a bad result; however, a good product still needs to be made well to achieve its full potential.”

It will therefore be of no surprise that when it comes to the Naked Leaf Alex is equally pedantic, and has snubbed the teabag in favour of fresh tea leaves, believing traditional teabags are full of little more than tea dust. “The comparison is like night and day,” he says.

With the ‘Naked Cocoa’ under development, the future of the Naked Bean is certainly sweet.

So what’s next? “I’d love to travel the world sourcing my own tea leaves and coffee beans,” smiles Alex, “but for now I am happy in the knowledge that my brand is at the very top of its league.”

To sample the Naked Bean, visit No1, Touched by Scotland, Glenfiddich Distillery, Richmond Deli.

With the festivities in full swing and the bleak midwinter still to endure, the traditional house sale season seems a long way off, but it’s never too soon to start thinking ahead according to residential sales specialists, Simpson and Marwick.

Getting your property prepared in advance of marketing is half the battle. They can help you get your house in order, so once you have dusted down the decorations, tossed out the tree and swept up the last of the needles, it’s an ideal time to get some expert advice.

Calling in the Simpson and Marwick valuation team of Fiona Gormley, Brenda Smith and Rona Middler should be your first step. With over 60 years’ experience between them, they provide a free, no obligation valuation and follow up their visit with a full marketing report, including an objective overview and an all-inclusive breakdown of fees. During their visit they will offer House Doctor advice so that you can help showcase your property at its best.

Simpson and Marwick, who won property team of the year in the 2010 Legal Awards, could even save you money, as property partner Dave Geddie explains: “People are often undecided as to whether they should undertake capital improvements before selling. With our extensive property experience we can advise if any proposed changes are going to be cost effective. Many clients have used this service over the quieter winter months to ensure they can open the door on opportunity with confidence when they’re ready to sell.”

Prego’s chefs cleverly vary what’s on offer throughout the day to match the culinary cravings of the clientele, with take away options being made and presented to the same high standards enjoyed by customers in Prego’s bistro and coffee shop next door.

The afternoon sandwich and soup options, on offer from 2.30pm, are perfect if you’ve been stuck in a meeting over lunchtime and need to grab something warm and filling.Later on, the crepes-to go menu, which now offers a selection of savoury fillings, is perfect for days when you’redashing about and need somethingdeliciously light.

If you have a sweet tooth then try Prego’s ever-changing array of twenty four ice-creams from Mövenpick, and the organic Cream of Galloway range,

finished with a selection of delicious home-made sauces and fun toppings. They also offer a beautifully presented range of sweet crepes, and it’s typical of Prego’s attention to detail and approach to customer service that each sweet crepe comes with a free scoop of ice-cream, packaged separately from the crepe, to ensure it doesn’t melt before you get it home. We can recommend the banana crepe with home-made toffee sauce and banoffee ice-cream, though the yummy chocolate option is not without its attractions.

If you’ve got more time to spare, then take a seat in the relaxed, family-friendly bistro which offers a great menu of meals and snacks throughout the day and evening. Whatever time of the day you go, Prego will have something to tempt your taste buds and leave you with a happy glow.

Trend stylist, Charlotte Stroud packed up her It Bag and headed south for London Fashion Week, to report on what we’ll be wearing this spring. Charlotte writes:

Having attended dozens of catwalk shows and schmoozed with designers in my attempts to find out where fashion is heading, here are my tips for what to buy to look on trend for spring and summer 2011.

Invest in leather to see you through the dreary winter months and straight through to spring in the form of biker jackets, shorts and, for the more adventurous, leather mini-skirts. Team this with uber-feminine floral prints to add a hint of an exotic girly edge.

Spring will bring an Eighties revival in the form of neon. 1940’s style tea dresses in exuberant pink and orange will certainly brighten a dull Scottish April’s day. This is a look that isn’t for the shy and retiring, so some readers may prefer the ladylike looks that will abound.

Pack away your skinny jeans as this season is all about the flared trouser. Team with a mannish blazer or an opaque floral shirt for the ultimate glam grown up look. This trend is brilliant, as it balances out both larger and smaller figures.

Accessories are going to be massive. Huge bold bright jewellery will add funky accents to any mundane outfit. Belts must be worn with everything from trousers to dresses to cinch in those waists. Multi-coloured head scarves will make you feel like an African princess both on and off the beach. Pull out your neglected wedges, platforms and open-toed shoe boots from this summer as these are still going to be big news next year. Think bright and feminine with a harder edge to fully embrace Spring/Summer 2011.

And me, well, I can’t wait to see what Autumn/Winter 2011 will have in store for us!

If you’re looking for a special way to show your appreciation, then check out Dalmore’s fantastic 1283 King Alexander III Single Malt. The satin-lined box reveals an inviting stag’s head bottle filled with a dark amber concoction of smooth toffee, red berries, plums, almonds and finished with a vanilla and citrus tang.

Aged in vintage Oloroso and Madeira butts, bourbon barrels and wine casks, it’s a complex, characterful, but ultimately rewarding malt from Master Distiller, Richard Patterson.

At around £140, it’s not cheap, but it’ll certainly win you a lot of brownie points.

The Evoque’s bold exterior features exciting new interpretations of classic Range Rover design cues, including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid 'wheel-at-each-corner' stance.

Unlike any previous Range Rover, the Evoque adopts a very dynamic profile with its dramatic rising beltline, a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, and a distinctive taper to the floating roofline. The bold design graphic created by the exaggerated

wedge of the window line is emphasised by the black pillars.

The stylish body exudes a strong

sense of premium quality with its precise, tight shut-lines, striking details like the bonnet vents and side vents, and the jewel-like quality of the slim front and rear lamps with their LED signature lighting. Drivers who take their Range Rover Evoque off-road will be reassured to know that in addition to extremely generous ground clearance, the car has significantly better breakover angle, approach angle and departure angle than other premium SUVs.

The turbocharged powertrain line-up offers smooth and responsive performance. Customers can choose from the comprehensively updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 190PS or

150PS derivatives. The four-wheel-drive version combined with the 150PS 2.2-litre will offer up to an impressive 50mpg* and 145g/km* CO2. The state-of-the-art new 240PS, 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing for exceptional driveability and fuel efficiency.

The order books are filling up fast and Land Rover dealers, for the first time, are taking deposits so if you think you would like to be one of the first to have an Evoque you'd better get down to your local lealer pretty fast to order. Delivery starts in the middle of 2011.

If you go down to the

woods today...> wOrds by COurtNEy O'Grady

Some of childhood’s fondest memories are woven from the threads of the simplest activities – exploring a secret den in the woods, discovering a fat caterpillar under a fallen leaf, and the quintessential childhood activity, making mud pies.

Fortunately for Aberdeen, this knowledge has inspired one local Zoology graduate to create a business offering educational, hands-on outdoor fun sessions to preschool-aged children and their parents. Mandy Tulloch, who started Mud Pies in September 2009, has converted her own love of nature into an opportunity for parents to spend time discovering the natural world with their children.

I met up with Mandy and a bundled-up band of tiny mudslingers for a recent adventure in Countesswells Woods, and it wasn’t long before I was squelching and squishing with the rest of them. There is nothing more contagious than the delighted squeals that accompany a troop of toddlers given the freedom to run, jump and splash to their hearts’ content.

A typical ninety-minute Mud Pies session begins with an adventure walk through easily accessible woods, during which children are encouraged to collect interesting finds into a canvas bag. It only takes an outside observer seconds to see how quickly a child’s imagination takes over, as mossy logs suddenly become wild crocodiles and trees become giant aliens.

The children eventually gather under a shelter in the trees, where they display their treasures for Mandy to identify with her impressive knowledge of local flora and fauna. Everyone then participates in a themed activity, followed by a snack and, of course, the creation of a mud pie.

Mud Pies offers educational sessions – and now birthday parties – throughout the year, in all seasons and all weather. Just remember, you can’t have this much fun without getting a little messy, so don’t forget your wellies!

You may have passed it many times before but not ventured in. Once you do, you’ll wonder how you could have side-stepped it for so long.

Treehouse in Aberdeen’s west end is a treasure trove, an Aladdin’s Cave, a secret chamber luring you in likea tardis.

A one-stop-shop to home interiors heaven, it stocks almost everything required from floor to ceiling – and

lots more in between – from candles to Christmas decorations, mirrors, chandeliers, furniture, soft furnishings and gifts.

Treehouse evolved from the Wood Floor Centre, offering the North-east’s most extensive range of top quality wood flooring, unrivalled expertise, skilled fitters and sanders, to become a furniture shop and now unique home fashion store.

Sitting on the corner of Whitehall Road, its picture windows twinkle with mirrored furniture and a silver baby chaise longue.

Inside, two rooms house Aberdeen’s only SIA home fashion shop whose autumn and christmas ranges in store now are available to view at www.treehouseinteriors.com. Vases, dishes and storm lanterns sparkle in silver, white and glass. A glossy black console sits beneath an oval mirror studded

with Swarovski crystals among more gifts, garlands, a rainbow chandelier and swathe of Designers Guild fabric.

Venture into the next room and discover quirky furniture: a Louis chair in devore velvet figured with stags, nickel chests, film studio lights, clocks and tartan wing chairs.

Move through again to find dining and folding waiters’ tables laden with more goodies: a glistening mirrored shelf with

an ornate perspex border and matching mirror, a glossy vintage-style model of a Riva speedboat, a sophisticated gentleman’s gift.

Moira McGlashan manages Treehouse and its Interior Design service for owners, Steve and Suzanne Gardiner.

“There’s a misconception interior design is expensive or elitist,” she says. “We’re exploding that myth. Whether you need two rolls of wallpaper or a full-scale

design you always get the same friendly service, a huge choice range and our insider knowledge.”

Ever fancied having your own country estate in the tranquil Scottish Borders? Well, we can’t quite stretch to that, but we have lined up a fabulous weekend break for two, at the rather grand Cringletie House just outside Peebles.

You wander the walled gardens or stride about the 28 acres of grounds while pretending to be the resident lady and laird, before enjoying a scrumptious dinner and retiring for the evening to your luxuriously appointed room.

Cringletie’s restaurant is renowned for the quality of its cuisine and for the use of local, seasonal ingredients. The menu will leave you spoilt for choice, so relax over a drink and maybe check out other diners’ plates as the

waiters pass by, before making thatdifficult decision!

There’s plenty to do in the area if you do decide to venture out from the hotel’s grounds. If you’re feeling energetic, then give mountain biking a go, or enjoy a leisurely game of golf.

If you’d prefer a more relaxing day, then the local fishing is excellent, or head into Hawick or Kelso to visit some of the world’s best cashmere producers, or head to Edinburgh. Pop to Harvey Nicks, have dinner in town and see a show before heading back to your Borders fiefdom to settle down forthe evening.

For a chance to win a two night stay at the

four-star Cringletie House, including dinner for two on one night, just answer this question: What town is Cringletie close to?

Tea parties, rock samples and dealing with

for Sally Moir, founding director of SMART

Consultants - the North-east's leading visual

arts consultancy.

A graduate of both Gray's and the prestigious

Slade School of Fine Art in London, Sally

returned to her native North-east in 2004.

She began by curating the Foyer's renowned

exhibition programme which transformed

the Crown Street restaurant into a popular

gallery, showcasing some of the best local

and international talent. Since then SMART

have gone from strength to strength, carving

a real niche within Aberdeen’s business sector

by advising them on their corporate art and

curating exhibitions at company headquarters,

including St James’s Place and BP. They have

also pioneered new initiatives such as 'Fabric of

the Land', a partnership with the University of

Aberdeen’s Geology Department and Senergy.

2009 was a landmark year as SMART

became the founding tenants of the ‘Creative

Art House’ on Forbes St – a new space

dedicated to the creative industries. As well

as providing a base for SMART’s activities,

the Creative Art House provides affordable

office space for up-and-coming creative

talent who may not otherwise be able to

afford a professional base.

Over the last 18 months a highlight of

SMART’s portfolio has been 'Tea Cosy'- an arts

and crafts fair modelled in the style of an old-

fashioned tea dance. These events have built

up a real following and now attract thousands

of shoppers to buy wares from the North-

east's hottest talent in sculpture, jewellery,

clothing and design. A special Christmas

Tea Cosy event will take place in Rosemount

Community Centre on December 4th.

Sally says: ‘When I came back to Aberdeen

I wanted to play a part in the cultural life of

the city, so it’s been an exciting four years

watching SMART grow - and now through

Tea Cosy and the Creative Art House we’re

able to give other young creative professionals

Cosy up with Cari

Cari Murdoch appears to be a one-woman whirlwind. The five times Gift of the Year winner somehow juggles a

textiles course at Gray’s School of Art with running her own accessories company and blogging too.

Cari has been fascinated by textiles for most of her career. After taking qualifications in embroidery, she moved

on to designing cushions, then wedding accessories and corporate gifts before designing and supplying accessories for Monsoon, Accessorize, Clinton Cardsand TopShop.

Now she’s back in Aberdeen and is combining her coursework with designing a great new range of distinctive collars, cuffs, and snoods which are ideal for the cold Scottish winter. With a great choice of fleeces, tartans, tweeds and fake furs, there’s something to keep everyone warm and looking good. The faux shearling pieces are particularly fashionable this season, with the collars fitting in a v-shape round the neck, making them an ideal

cover-up where you don’t want to add the bulk of a scarf.

Each piece is hand finished and embellished by Cari’s team, and particular care is taken

over quality. Cari offers a top to toe accessories selection, with everything from hair ornaments to incredibly cute dolly bags and socks.

It’s a refreshingly wholesome, family-friendly city of woolly-hatted cyclists that comes alive in the run up to Christmas, with festive markets springing up all over the city. Browse the stalls at the fabulous Tivoli Gardens and combine buying presents with fairground rides, free concerts, about a billion white fairy lights, kids dressed as Nisser – a Scandinavian variety of pixie - glasses of gløgg and apple dumplings. Market stalls include Hamleys and George Jensen as well as those selling festive decorations, cosy footwear and food. Even the breweries deliver their special festive ale by horse-drawn wagons to add to the atmosphere – and

if you take a trip to the Carlsberg visitor’s centre, you can even meet the horses and sample the product.

For a serious retail session, head for Strøget and the surrounding streets, where you can find everything from Top Shop to Chanel, Gucci and Hugo Boss. The streets are scented with fir branches and decorated with traditional red and white.

Randers Handsker, the world’s oldest glove factory, has a huge colour selection in the softest leathers, Royal Copenhagen’s display of Christmas tables is bound to inspire, and Strøget is

also home to several jewellers offering perfect gifts for the stylish woman. A block away, Notre Dame is like an upscale Lakeland with rustic and modern decorations, cookware and home goods – everything from twiggy wreaths to a set of twenty-four mini advent candles.

The side streets are packed with newer designers, intriguing antiques, book cafes and record shops. Gamesweb offer traditional toys and great chess sets while BR has a huge selection of modern toys and a lifesize Lego Santa. If one-stop shopping appeals, head for Illums, the city’s designer department store

which offers everything from perfumes to shearling slippers, hi-tech toys, Hermes, and high end chocolates.

Illums Bolighus, the centre for Danish Design, offers some exquisite gift options, as does the gift shop of the National Museum nearby. It’s true that nothing is cheap, with restaurant bills likely to make an Aberdonian’s hair stand on end, but quality and design tend to remain stylish while cheap fashion loses its charm quickly.

If you tire of shopping and want to see a different side of Denmark, don’t

miss Roskilde, just thirty minutes away by train. This delightful small city is home to the huge Roskilde rock festival each summer, but also hosts a market twice weekly just outside the magnificent medieval Domkirken. This cathedral has everything from Northern Renaissance frescoes to stunning modern bronze doors and is well worth a visit, especially if you’re lucky enough to be guided by the charming Ola. A short stroll to the fjord takes you to the Viking Museum which is home to five restored longships and a host of reproduction vessels you can

sail in the summer. You can dress up as a Viking or watch craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills. You can even order your own longship!

If you want to put some sparkle back into your festive season, then head for Denmark – it really is a winter wonderland!

Provost Skene’s House is tucked away on Guestrow, its turrets and rough stone walls pleasingly at odds with the surrounding buildings. I had never seen it before, and I am not sure how I have missed it. The house itself is a charming example of late medieval architecture. Inside, each of its rooms provides an insight into many of the periods that the house has seen in its 450 year history.

There are eighteenth century rooms dedicated to the elegance of the Georgian period, Regency rooms that represent the splendour of the early nineteenth century, a late nineteenth century nursery, and even a costume gallery that regularly displays period fashionsand uniforms.

All of these rooms are fascinating - they demonstrate the long and rich history of the house - but it is the seventeenth century rooms that have the most impact.

The Great Hall seems almost spartan compared to the Georgian dining room, but its grandeur is in its simplicity, while the Painted Gallery – dark, solemn, and incredibly atmospheric - is home to one of the most unique examples of religious paintingin Scotland.

I was surprised at how much time I spent wandering around the house, but even more so when I went downstairs to the cafe. Cakes and teas are served in a room that preserves the atmosphere of the upper floors

- thick, curved stone walls and a low ceiling provide the backdrop, and there is a portion of the floor that drops away beneath glass to give a view deep down into the cellar. This is diverting, pleasantly disconcerting to walk across, and entirely in keeping with the house’s tendency to surprise. Guestrow, behind St. Nicolas HouseTel: 01224 641086www.aagm.co.uk

Dear Trend, I was faced with my usual dilemma at this time of year, wondering what I was going to buy for Christmas presents and how much time I was going to have to spend trying to get it right. I picked up a copy of Trend magazine whilst in town, and when I got home I started flicking through the pages. I was filled with inspiration and soon had a list of ideas to consider for gifts, I was quite excited at the prospect of being organised and giving gifts which are not predictable, but will certainly be appreciated. Thanks to Trend I am now looking forward to a less stressful 'run-up' to Christmas and I have also entered some of the competitions in the hope I might win a present.

Dear Trend, I always look forward to my trips into Aberdeen City Centre Shops, and am delighted when there is a new copy of Trend sitting beside the till for me to pick up. Keenan Recycling Drive

An Aberdeenshire green waste recycling firm has teamed up with a large local business to reduce food waste and increase recycling rates.

Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer, has helped Mitchell’s Dairy in Inverurie to implement a new commercial food waste collection scheme throughout the company. The scheme, which is the first of its kind in the North-East, allows organisations to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels into BSI accredited compost.

Keith Whyte of Mitchell’s Dairy said:“Around 600 litres of waste a week, which was previously going to landfill,

is now being sent to Keenan Recycling. Increasing our recycling capacity by around 60%.” With as many as 800 customers per day, the food waste recycling scheme is estimated to reduce their annual waste from 50 tonne to 10-20 tonne.

Mitchell’s are also set to use Keenan’s recycled compost in their flower baskets.Keenan Recycling deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from local authorities all over Scotland and businesses in the North-east at their £3.2m facility in New Deer.

“It’s kind of ironic,” grins Myke Black as we prepare another photo set-up in Malmaison’s plush Balmoral suite. ”I woke up with a hangover this morning and wished I could spend the dayin bed..” Earlier this year, Myke released a remarkable debut album called ‘Nice Little Earner’- ten songs which showcase a performer of considerable range, whose talent in writing heartfelt, memorably catchy songs is matched evenly by his ability to sing them. As you listen to the album for the first time, you’ll feel proud that a local lad has released something so impressive, something easily good enough to be on the radio and with considerably more depth than anything you’ll hear on X-Factor. And you may well look up

the credits to see who helped him out – who produced it, who his co-writer was, what studio he used..only to find that Myke did the whole thing himself, over the course of a year - in his bedroom! Thus, the photo location: a bedroom as uncommonly impressive as the record he’s promoting. ‘Nice Little Earner’ is a winning combination of intimate lo-fi atmospherics, laid back simplicity and a sense of optimism that’s quite infectious. On a playlist, he’d sit comfortably between Bon Hiver, Newton Faulkner and Jack Johnson. When I tell Myke this he laughs, thanks me and adds Paolo Nutini to the list. He’s happy with the comparisons. “I want to write music that is accessible, that appeals to all ages,” he says.

Although Myke Black’s music has broad appeal, his credibility as an artist is certainly intact. At the start of 2009, Myke quit his full time job to concentrate solely on songwriting and performing. When he’s not promoting his own material, he pays the rent by playing around Aberdeen in venues such as The Albyn, The 210 Bistro, Sopranos and The Lemon Tree. “I do what I love doing”, he says. “I want to do this for the rest of my life. I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else.” Myke Black’s ‘Nice Little Earner’ is available from 1-Up, HMV and iTunes. www.myspace.com/mykejayblack

Candida used her contacts in the fashion world to stage a glitzy fashion show last spring at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa in Aberdeen which raised a whopping £41,000 for Marie Curie and at the same venue in September, the sixth black-tie Brain Game, sponsored by BP, brought in more than £22,200.

The charity has an annual daffodil appeal and family tea parties will be staged next summer, notably atCrathes Castle. Area fundraiser is Carolyn Snedden based at 34 Urquhart Road, Aberdeen, who can be contacted at 01224 647221.

For someone who hit the giddy heights of fame as the worldwide face of Chanel’s Allure perfume and lives at Crimonmogate House, a 19th century stately home near Fraserburgh designed by Archibald Simpson, the patron of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity in the north-east, mother-of-two Candida Bond, is remarkably grounded. It helps that Lady Petersham and her husband, Will Stanhope, the son and heir of Viscount Petersham and brother-in-law of Viscount Linley, love country life and are delighted that their daughter Tirkana, seven, and son Augustus, five, are well settled in alocal primary. “Yes, I was very much in the fast lane with Chanel but appreciate

the different pace of life here and love being involved in community activities,” she says. That has included being a judge at the Inverallochy baby show, no less. Candida succeeded Joanna, Marchioness of Aberdeen, as the charity’s patron in 2008 and says candidly: “It was a hard act to follow a former nurse who did such a splendid job for 12 years and raised awareness of how hugely important the Marie Curie nursing service is to terminally ill people and their families. “Every £20 we raise pays for an hour of a nurse’s time and we have over 40 of them in our area who bring great comfort to people in their own homes.”
