Each year, my team at Modsy loves to peel back the wallpaper and take a look at what really went on: what did our customers buy, what styles were they drawn to, and what that means for the current and future State of the Home. It’s a way for us to reflect on the trends from the past year and give us some direction on what 2019 has in store. Hint: It’s all about the three C’s: Color, Curves and Comfort!

As you’ll see in the report, there are some clear lines drawn this year. Two styles have prevailed as the strong majority, and we love them both: Mod (Mid-Century pieces, natural wood tones, and pops of color) and Rustic (warm hues, layered textures, and cozy spaces). We dug into how these styles landed geographically, and it wasn’t always what we expected.

We examined purchasing trends, what people are buying, and what that says about 2018 style. It was exciting to see customers investing in categories such as rugs, art, and pillows - pieces that can really show off your unique personality and make home feel like home.

Life can be stressful and complicated, but decorating a living room should not be. More and more, we’re seeing our customers opt for stylish, but comfortable places they can be with their loved ones and relax. If the State of the Home can be a happy one, we believe happier lives are sure to follow.

There are two main styles that dominate almost every state in the US: Rustic and Mod.

Midwest and Southern regions of the US are drawn more to a Rustic style, with Mod coming in at a close second.

Eastern and Western regions were flipped with Mod styles coming in at #1 and Rustic styles at #2.

Top Ten Furniture Categories

Modsy customers are buying items that bring in color and patterns but also that also feel uniquely personal. These pieces tend to be easy, affordable additions for renters who can’t paint or renovate.

Mirrors add light and dimension to a space, no matter the style. Mirrors can serve as statement pieces and transcend room type.

Poufs are the new ottoman! Designed to work in multiple style spaces, poufs are a more casual addition to a home and are even more versatile than an ottoman. They don’t have to match the furniture and can be easily moved or hidden.

Outside of the top categories we had a few unique single purchase items including a home gym, ceiling fan, and even a cat hammock!

Green Thumbs are out and Black Thumbs in! Fake plants dominated the shopping cart in 2018. A ton of retailers sell them, and they allow you to get that jungalow look without the effort of keeping a plant alive.

People are bringing the outdoors, indoors with natural fiber/texture trends. These neutral, earthy elements fit well into a Rustic style and can adapt to multiple color palettes.

Rugs are the biggest investment pieces of 2018. They can really make a room come together and are often the missing piece to a room that feels “unfinished.”

Top Color Trendsof 2018

The Modsy Style Quiz tells us a lot about what colors people like and what they actually want to see in their homes. Spoiler alert: Pantone’s color of the year, Ultraviolet, was not a frequent favorite.

These popular color combinations come across in items purchased, especially artwork, pillows, and decor pieces.

In general, imagery we see on TV, magazines, and on social media shows bold bright colors in order to catch the eye, but in reality people are buying stable neutrals that have longevity.

Not so popular? Pastels only account for 3% of customers. While millenial pink may have been all the rage (or so we thought), people don't actually want it all over their homes.

Greens were also low on the list, with 6% of customers. People want their greenery limited to plant life, not furniture life.

Nature, Naturally - The natural textures and plants we saw in 2018 are here to stay and 2019 is all about layering them. Bring some zen into your home, no matter your style with a few key pieces. To add natural textures into your space, think: jute rugs, storage baskets, rattan chairs and woven wall-hangings.

7 / A LOOK AHEADthe 2019 trend preview

Boldly Neutral - While neutral color palettes have been all the rage, we’re going to see more and more dramatic neutral palettes. Think dark neutrals paired with lighters colors to create high contrast spaces.

Painterly Strokes - While it might be no surprise to see this trend in art, we’re going to see patterns that reflect the artist’s hand and brushstroke in rugs, pillows, and other textile prints.

Classic Whimsy - We're going to see Classical subjects of art presented in a whimsical style creating a modern spin on a once very serious theme. Graded on a Curve -

Hard lines are being traded in for softer curves. We’re already seeing curved furniture, such as sofas, armchairs, even beds, and think this is a trend that will be everywhere in 2019.
