SETTING OUT WITH PORTSWelcome to our all-new PORTS Cruising Guide to Trent-Severn and Lake Simcoe!
If you’ve ever thought about venturing a little further away from your homeport to explore the beautiful, historically rich waterside communities along the Trent-Severn Waterway, we hope this book encourages you to make it a reality.
This 2013 edition marks the fifth installment of Trent-Severn & Lake Simcoe since the title was first added to the PORTS Cruising Guides library in 1996. These pages feature all-new photog-raphy and updated descriptions of each area along the route.
Originally, the system was designed to cre-ate a commercial route from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay, an undertaking that took 87 years to complete (1833 to 1920). Today, it’s primarily used by pleasure boaters and cottag-ers. At 386 kilometres (240 miles) in length, exploring the entire Trent-Severn Waterway is no small feat. Our writer begins the journey from the system’s southern entrance at Trenton and the Bay of Quinte and guides you through the system’s 44 locks in numerical order all the way to Port Severn and the entrance to Geor-gian Bay. Along the way, this edition provides in-depth descriptions of what to expect as you navigate the route as well as tips about where you can restock, fuel up, tour on shore, eat out or spend the night as a transient. In addition, you’ll find descriptions of countless historical sites you can visit en route as well as a variety of local fairs and festivals held throughout the boating season.
Part of the charm of navigating the Trent-Severn is the experience of passing through the system’s variety of historical locks and swing bridges. If you’ve never been through a lock before and are a bit nervous, rest assured, this book contains a detailed description what to ex-
pect at each one and tips on how to smoothly pass through (see “Locking Through” on page 16). Parks Canada oversees the operation of the system and has an information line if you have any questions (see “Using The Trent Severn Waterway” on page 13). You’ll find that Parks Canada lockmasters are immensely helpful.
If your journey includes a visit to Lake Sim-coe, you’ll really appreciate this book. The larg-est lake on the system, even a direct route from the Trent Canal to The Narrows at Atherley re-quires 24 kilometres of travel on Lake Simcoe. Upon leaving the protected waters of the canal, you’ll want to know in advance where the clos-est protected anchorages are located in case of bad weather. For your convenience, GPS way-points have been provided to help you along the way (See page 143).
It’s important to note that PORTS Trent Severn & Lake Simcoe in no way replaces the small-craft navigational charts published by the Cana-dian Hydrographic Service (www.charts.gc.ca). In fact, you should have a chart for every region that you plan to visit. A list of charts for navigat-ing the entire system can be found on the map on page 7.
As always, we remain committed to deliver-ing you the most accurate, up-to-date informa-tion for your next voyage. We hope this edition of PORTS Trent Severn & Lake Simcoe becomes a permanent resident aboard your boat and provides you the perfect excuse to create new memories with your friends and family as you explore the system. See you on the water!

GOING THE DISTANCE ON THE TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY
ON LAKE SIMCOE
USING THE LAKE SIMCOE AND TRENT-SEVERN CHARTS TOGETHERIf you want to estimate how far it is from Barrie to Bobcaygeon, for example, take the distance from Barrie to the mouth of the Trent Canal entrance (27 miles as noted on the Lake Simcoe chart below), and add the distance from Lock
41 (which is 1.5 miles beyond the Trent Canal entrance) to Bobcaygeon (42.5 miles as noted on the adjoining Trent-Severn chart on the next page). The result: It is approximately 71 miles from Barrie to Bobcaygeon.
A comprehensive mileage guide to the Trent-Severn Waterway and Lake Simcoe
1. Distances are expressed in statute miles in keeping with the measurement system of the small-craft charts. (1 statute mile = .86 nautical miles)
2. Distances have been measured as straight-line voyages wherever possible.
3. Distances are approximate only; fractions are rounded to the next higher mile.
4. Distances will vary dramatically with the route taken. The distances here should be used as indications only.

TRENT-SEVERN & LAKE SIMCOE | PORTS CRUISING GUIDE | 5
TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY
Every boater knows that in an emergency, you put out a distress call on VHF radio channel 16. But those cellphones so many of us now carry provide a quick backup way of reaching help.
Punch *16 to reach the Canadian Coast
Guard in an emergency.911 is a land-based system – so it’s not the most efficient way of getting help quickly while you’re on the water. And the Coast Guard also cautions that a cellphone isn’t a substitute for a VHF. For starters,
a cell call is only heard by one person. It doesn’t instantly alert other boats in the area that you’re in trouble – boats that potentially could get to you first. And unlike VHF transmissions, cell signals can’t be followed back to your location by rescuers.

CRUISE PLANNING HELPA basic lock-by-lock guide for the Trent-Severn Waterway
When this edition of PORTS Trent-Severn & Lake Simcoe went to press (2013), Parks Canada had proposed a new fee structure for governing passage through the locks and over-night mooring (set to take effect for the 2014 boating season). Proposed fees were sub-stantially higher than those in effect in 2012. However, in addition to individual tickets for one-time lock passage, Parks Canada offers one-day, six-day and seasonal unlimited lock-age passes (a seasonal unlimited mooring pass is also available) that should help reduce the cost of travel on the system for regular users. Parks Canada also proposed ongoing index-ing formula as a guide for increasing lockage and mooring fees to keep pace with Canada's
cost of living rate.Current information about lock permits and
fees, operating hours and depths can be ob-tained by contacting Trent-Severn Waterway headquarters (see p. 13 for contact info) or checking its website.
THE LOWDOWN ON THE LOCKMASTERSEach lock office on the Trent-Severn Water-
way has its own telephone. As the lockmasters are among the best and most knowledgeable – and friendliest – sources of information on the system, we have included each of the lock tele-phone numbers here. However, these people are busy, and some lock through hundreds of boats in a day. We don’t suggest you take up
their time by phoning with general questions the Trent Severn Waterway Headquarters or the local tourist board could handle. (The box at the start of each town section in PORTS in-cludes phone numbers for the tourist board, chamber of commerce and/or municipal office that’s responsible for the area.) But if you’re un-sure about facilities at or near a specific lock, give the lock office a call.
Many of the lock stations have been retro-fitted to include wheelchair-accessible wash-rooms. They are indicated by an asterisk (*) in the list below.
(Please note: Lift height indicated below is calculated as average lift.)
