A MOBILE INCLUSIVE LEARNING PLATFORM FOR

SECONDARY STUDENTS

helping students succeed

A surprising high number of students who began secondary education never

finish it. Many of these students struggle with reading and writing difficulties

and lose their motivation for completing a subject. These students end up

having to take unskilled jobs or relying on the safety net. How can we help

these students finish their education and reach their full potential? At the

same time, many new e-learning modules come to the market, but lack the

ability for easy follow-up by parents and teachers. If we can chart students'

strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning, we can create a tailored

program that takes into accounts students’ disabilities, engage the students

and motivate them to finish.

bringing systems together

Figure 1: Concept for system, dashed lines indicate bridges between modules that do not currently exist.

We are looking at building bridges between different systems that are used in

education to create a tailored learning experience for students. In education

today, we have mapping systems, student analysis systems, and learning con-

tent systems. Mapping systems can create student profiles for individuals

based on their values, interests, and preferences. Student analysis systems

help teachers track students’ progress, identify issues, and design plans for

them. Finally, the e-learning content can provide the information students

use to learn a subject combined with teaching. Yet, there is currently no way

to link these systems together. A student's profile describing interests and

preferences is not readily available for the teacher when determining how a

student should proceed. Similarly, a teacher can select novel e-learning expe-

riences, but it is difficult to have the feedback from the e-learning material

make it back to the student analysis module. It also difficult to tailor the mate-

rial for a student that may have difficulties with the material presented in a

traditional way.

We feel that creating a bridge between these different systems (Figure 1)

would give teachers better access to information and be able to create more

tailored experience for the students. Students will receive information that is

tailored for their learning style and in their interests. This should result in

more students being able to complete a study program and to find gainful

employment and meaningfully contribute to society.

who we are

The Norwegian Computing Center (Norsk Regnesentral) is a private, inde-

pendent, non-profit foundation established in 1952. The Norwegian Compu-

ting Center carries out contract research and development projects in the

areas of information and communication technology (ICT) and applied sta-

tistical modeling. Our ICT department offers applied research within smart

information systems, information security, universal design and e-inclusion.

Our specialty is to combine technical development with user studies and as-

sessments while taking care of possible privacy and security issues.

who we need

We are looking for technology partners for help in implementing the system,

businesses that have learning material that would like to make accessible

through this platform, and schools and other learning institutions that would

be interesting in serving as pilot locations.
