    MECOSTA NEIGHBORHOOD

    WATCH BLOCK LEADERS

    MET ON WEDNESDAY TO

    DISCUSS PLANNING OF

    PATROLS AND INFORMING

    MORE RESIDENTS ABOUT

    THE WATCH.

    Criminals beware

    Residents in Mecosta attempt

    to curb criminal element with

    neighborhood watchBy Brad Klosner

    Pioneer Staff Writer

    MECOSTA The Village

    f Mecosta Neighborhood

    atch block leaders met on

    ednesday to formulate patrol

lans to curb crime in the village.

    We came together because of

    he vandalism going on, said

    atch Coordinator Ruth Bishop.

We have a lot of (late night)

oise thats going on in town. The neighborhood watch block

leaders held an open meeting on

    Wednesday at the village hall.

    There are eight block leaders

    who are responsible for certain

    sections of town. When crimes

    are observed, watch members

report to the block leaders, who

    then, report to the coordinator.

    The coordinator is in touch

with Sgt. Scott Ruggles of the

Mecosta County Sheriffs Office. The focus of the neighborhood

watch is the noise and the

    vandalism, said block leader

John Rau. And the presence (of

    watch members) to let people

    know were there (to help).

    The informal meeting was to

    discuss ideas and formulate

    patrol plans around the

    neighborhood. The group

    discussed patrolling routes for

    block leaders and members to

    prevent overlap, distribution of

    flyers to inform residents about

the watch, coming up with ID

tags to identify block and watch

    members and encouraging

more residents to join the watch.

The group also has ordered 10

street signs, 10 signs for houses

    and businesses and 50 window

    decals to be distributed. This

has been the third meeting since

    residents came together to form

    the watch.

    There also were discussions

    concerning the rate of patrols

    going around the village. Block

leaders wanted to be sure that

    they were not harassing village

residents with any patrols. We are not police, Bishop said.

I dont think anyone here has

the right to knock on someones

door and tell them what to do.

I want (the watch) to improve

    the neighborhood and bring it

    together.

    However, the watch is keeping

    an eye on certain ordinances

    within the village and will

    either be making complaints

to the village code officer, JimLeszczynski, or directly to

    Ruggles at the sheriffs office.

The watch is making it a point

    to enforce late-night noise

    violations and the curfew for

    children 16 and younger, which

states they can not be out

without an adult past 10 p.m.

    Block leaders are encouraged

to give out verbal warnings to

youth in violation of the curfew

but if problems persist, parentscan be fined.

    You want to encourage (the

youth) to go home, said block

    leader Alice Ray. Its getting

    better (at night). Its getting

    quieter.

    The group discussed having

a block party at the end of

August. The idea is to get village

    residents together in a relaxed

    atmosphere for some casual

    conversation about cohesion

    and village pride among the

    residents.

    Maybe this is what the

    neighborhood watch will do,

Bishop said. Maybe it will make

    us talk to our neighbors.

The block party will be held

    from 2 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 29 at

    Bromley Park in Mecosta. The

free event will feature a pig roast

with residents bringing a dish to

    pass. The next neighborhood

watch meeting is at 7 p.m. on

Aug. 11 at the village hall. All

    interested village residents are

    encouraged to attend.

    SEE AN EXPERT TO MAINTAIN

    GOOD CIRCULATION

(NewsUSA) - If you are an

    average adult, you have enough

    blood vessels, arteries, veins

    and associated capillaries in

your body to circle the earth

    four times. Placed end-to-end,

    these vessels stretch to almost

    100,000 miles. Your remarkable

    circulatory (vascular) system

is vital to keeping your body

    healthy and active. The blood

    flowing through it provides

    oxygen and nutrients your entire

    body needs.

    With age, your vascular system

    may become blocked with

    cholesterol and plaque, and

    your blood flow may become

    impaired. In severe cases,

the loss of blood flow may

    contribute to stroke, aneurysm

and peripheral arterial disease, which may cause pain while

    walking or limb-threatening foot

    ulcers. Common sense about

    eating a healthy diet, exercising

and not smoking all contribute to

    feeling good and keeping your

    vascular system healthy.

    Like any health condition, if

    you experience problems with

    your vascular system, it makes

sense to see the most qualifiedspecialist to manage your

    symptoms. While most vascular

    conditions do not require

    surgery, you will receive the

    most expert and comprehensive

care if you see a vascular

    surgeon. Most often, vascular

    surgeons manage conditions

    with medication. Some

    conditions can be corrected

    with non-invasive procedures

that offer good results andquick recovery. Only in the most

    severe cases is open surgery

    Todays vascular surgeons are

    the only specialists who are

    skilled in all vascular therapies.

    They are comprehensively

    trained in medicinal,

    invasive) and surgical therapies.

    Vascular surgeons are the

    experts who provide the best

    diagnosis and treatment for

    BACK TO SCHOOL: PREPARE

    YOUR TEEN FOR THE ROAD

    By Trisha Hessinger For

    NewsUSA

    (NewsUSA) - As the summer

comes to an end, teens prepare

to get back to the classroom

-- and the road. If your young

driver is ready to buy their first

    used vehicle, youll need to

    do your research. Firestone

    Complete Auto Care offers some

tips that will not only help you

in the process of buying a good

used vehicle, but will also help

    keep that vehicle running newer,longer:

When shopping for a used car:

    * Make the investment. Many

    problems with vehicles arent

    obvious. Have your teen

take the vehicle to a trusted

    automotive technician for a

    thorough inspection. A small

    investment upfront could mean

big savings down the road ifit prevents you from buying a

    vehicle with serious mechanical

    problems.

    * Check the Internet. Your teen

    can use a vehicles Vehicle

    Identification Number (VIN) to

search for its history online. Its a

good way to check for odometer

fraud and to find out if the car

has ever been damaged in an

    accident.

    * Trust your senses. Check for

    evidence of flood damage, which

    might include a musty smell,

    water stains, dried mud, mildew

or mold inside the car. Check for

stains on the carpet under the

dashboard, which can indicateheater core or air conditioner

    leakage.

    After purchasing your used

    vehicle:

    * Change the engine oil. Early

on, your teen should get in

    the habit of changing the

    oil according to the vehicle

    owners manual, usually every

    three months or 3,000 miles.

Prolonged driving without anoil change may cause severe

    engine damage, which can be

    very costly to repair.

    * Maintain your tires. Teach your

teen to check the tire inflation

    pressure every month. Tires

    should be properly balanced

    and rotated according to the

    maintenance schedule. The

    alignment should be checked

at least once a year. Properly

    maintained tires are safer and

    longer lasting, and can increase

gas mileage up to 3 percent,

    * Check the vehicles fluid levels.

    Have your automotive technician

show you and your teen how tocheck the transmission, power

    steering, windshield washer and

    coolant to make sure theyre

    properly filled. Also have your

    automotive technician check

    your vehicles brake fluid level

    and condition regularly.

    WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR

    HEALTH, YOUR HEART IS IN

    YOUR MOUTH

    (NewsUSA) - For years,

    you may have overlooked a

handy tool in the fight against

    cardiovascular disease -- your

    toothbrush.

    Studies link tooth and gum

health to heart health. A 2005

    review from Finlands Helsinki

    University Central Hospital,

    which was published in the

    Journal of Periodontology,

    found that chronic inflammation,

such as that found in gum

    disease, increases the risk that

    a patient will develop heart

    disease. A 2010 survey of

    12,000 people in Scotland found

that, over an average of eightyears, those who rarely or never

    brushed their teeth were 70

    percent more likely to develop

    heart disease than those with

    twice-daily brushing habits.

    Researchers dont quite know

    how the connection between

    oral health and heart health

    works, but that doesnt mean

that you should dismiss the link.

Brushing your teeth might be the

easiest, simplest way to keepyour heart healthy.

    Of course, brushing your teeth

isnt the only way to take care of

your mouth. Here are some tips:

    * Avoid smoking. If you smoke,

    stopping is absolutely the best

thing you can do to improve your

health. Speak to your doctor or

dentist about ways to help you

    quit.

    * Use oral care probiotics

    in addition to brushing and

    flossing. You can do more

    than simply brushing and

    flossing every day. Oral care

    probiotics, like EvoraPlus(www.myevoraplus.com), may

    help make up the difference.

    Probiotics, or good bacteria,

    adhere to tooth surfaces, where

they leave less room for harmful

    bacteria to attach to grow.

    * Dont let sugar stay on your

    teeth between brushings. Drink

    water after eating or drinking

liquids to rinse your teeth. Dont

bathe your teeth in sugar all day

by continuously eating or sippingbeverages like soda. Instead,

    have sugary liquids with meals

    and limit snacking. Stay away

from foods that are likely to stick

to teeth, such as candy, and try

    having an apple instead. Apples

    increase saliva production,

    so they actually help rinse

    your mouth of cavity-causing

    bacteria.
