Remus to hold FallFestival in October

    By Kyle LeppekPioneer Staff Writer

EMUS As an agriculturalommunity, it seems surprising Remusas not held a fall festival celebratinghe harvest season. Now, for the firstime ever, the Remus Area Historicalociety and the Remus Downtownevelopment Association will hold aay filled with fall activities to celebratehe changing seasons, harvest andhe heritage of the area. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 15, theestival will resemble an expandedarmers market in downtown Remus, aid society Secretary Char Lenon.

It will be a way for residents to drawttention to the Remus history and

ome together as a community. We just wanted to get peoplenterested in the museum and I thinkhey are getting that way, Lenon said.(It will) promote the town to workogether. We never really mergedroups together so the DDA anduseum are working together to havefamily event for the townspeople.

o help showcase the heritage of theown, former Remus resident Maryatchelder will display a project sheas been working on, documentingarns in the area. As the landscapehanges, Batchelder wanted toreserve what she sees as theoundation of the area.

I was raised on a farm. (Barns)ere such an important part of thehole history of any farming area andemus started out as a farming area;ou cant really have a farm withoutt, Batchelder said. A lot of them areust plain disappearing, people are nottaking care of them so if they are notocumented they are going to be gonend we will have no history of it.eeping with the farming heritage of

he area, the all-day festival will featurectivities for the whole family. Besideshe barn presentation at the museum,he festival will include a jamboree, ntique tractor show, petting zoo, rafters and vendors, a cider press, emonstrations and workshops.o help get the community in thearvest mood, Natalie Wernette, from

Hearty Harvest in Remus, will providelenty of pumpkins in addition to anlpaca, lambs and miniature pony asart of a petting zoo. Growing up inemus, Wernette is excited to enjoy

all by bringing together the communitynd learning more about its history. It is an excellent opportunity for theown to get together and talk about oureritage. I think the community hasdesire to remember our heritage, ernette said. I think with the younger

eneration, the heritage is starting toet lost. There is a push to remembernd learn and bring together more

ommunity involvement.he festival is still looking for craftersnd vendors to join. If interested, articipants should bring a canopy, tall or booth, or space also is availableo rent under the museums tent for amall fee. Participants are asked toonfirm their attendance by contactingenon at [email protected] or989) 967-8153. For more information, aren McKenzie also can be contactedt (989) 967-3602.lthough the festival has never been

held before, Lenon is confident it willbe a success for the community. We are just trying to pull the towntogether and show that we have alot of people interested in our area,he said. Its a way for families to getogether and enjoy the harvest falleason.

    Innovation Reigns WhenTimes Get Tough

(NewsUSA) - When people see closedstorefronts in the neighborhoods wherethey live and work, theyre remindedthat the toll this economy has takenon businesses affects their own lives. And yet some companies -- faced withthe same adverse headwinds -- seemto rise to the challenge and go on to

    prosper as never before.

Why is that? And could there even bea lesson to be learned here if yourethinking of starting your own businessas a result of either being unemployedor just plain fed up with your currentjob?

The i-word keeps popping upamong experts as the answer to thatquestion. The whole engine thatdrives any economy is innovation, says Stephen Gnass, executivedirector of the National Congress ofInventor Organizations, a non-profitfor inventors and inventor groups.

Take IBM, for example. It practicallyreinvented itself years ago -- goingfrom a stodgy seller of large, priceycomputers to a global software andconsulting giant -- and just recentlycelebrated its 100th anniversary. Andthen theres the more under-the-radarcase of New Jersey-based GAF.

North Americas largest roofing andventilation manufacturer is celebratingits own anniversary this year -- 25 yearslonger in business than IBM, but whoscounting? -- and one way it got there isby coming up with unique answers toconsumers and businesses desiresto go green. In fact, it made quite asplash last summer when it teamedup with New York Citys Departmentof Buildings to paint 1 million squarefeet of roofs white -- GAF supplied thereflective paint for one of the manyprojects of the initiative, as well asmaterials and labor -- as a way ofcutting the citys energy costs.

To GAFs CEO, Bob Tafaro, that kindof nimbleness is key. When you putcustomers first by ensuring that theyget quality products and service, and when you keep your employeesfocused on innovation, youve gotthe formula for surviving long termand throughout even the toughest

    economic times.

The companys commitment to serviceand innovation has actually produceda number of firsts, including: the firstready-to-lay asphalt roofing, the first touse color granules in roofing materials, and the first to offer a lifetime shinglewarranty. And, oh yes, for thoseconcerned about the outsourcing ofAmerican jobs, everythings made in America. For more information, visitwww.GAF.com.

Rules of Engagement:What to Know Before

Popping the Question(NewsUSA) - An engagement ringsymbolizes your promise to love and

cherish your partner forever, andshows the world your commitmentto your fiance. Many women dreamabout their engagement ring theirentire lives, so choosing the right style

    is of utmost importance.

Here are some tips to ease the pressureof finding the ring and proposing:

Its Not Only About the Diamond

A rings setting is as important asits diamond because the setting iswhat displays and secures the stone.Platinum provides an ideal setting as itis stronger than other precious metals, which means that you dont have toworry about losing the center stonewith everyday wear. Also, platinum isa naturally white metal, allowing thediamond to sparkle even brighter.

Did you know that a platinumengagement ring will last forever?Since platinum is so durable andloses little metal over time, the ringwill undoubtedly become a familyheirloom that can be passed down forgenerations to follow. And platinumengagement rings are surprisinglyaffordable. Contrary to popular belief, they are available in a wide range ofprice points, starting at around $1,000at BlueNile.com.

    Know Her Style

Before you go to the jewelry store, know your future fiances style,

personality and lifestyle since thereis a ring to suit her perfectly. Forexample, a woman with a hands-on

job, like nursing, might prefer a simpleband with a secure setting, while awoman who has a less active jobmight want something more intricate.A woman with classic style will wanta different band design than a trend-setting fashionista.

A classic polished platinum band fromMichael Barin will suit a girl with moretraditional tastes, while a birth stone ofcolored diamonds on an embellishedband like one from Suna Bros. will lookbold and unique, says jewelry and

style expert Michael OConnor. Tofigure out her ring size, press one ofyour girlfriends rings in a bar of soapuntil it leaves a mark. You can also putone of her rings on your own hand, mark where it falls on your finger andhave the jeweler measure that area, suggests OConnor.

    How to Propose

Some women want a public proposalin front of friends and family, whileothers want something private andspecial. In either case, your fiancewill remember the day for the rest ofher life. Think about what your fiancelikes, and where and how you met.For more tips on proposing marriageor choosing an engagement ring, visitwww.engagementguide.com or www.preciousplatinum.com.

Tips to Start the SchoolYear on the Right Track

(NewsUSA) - Back-to-school mayhempresents a number of challengesfor parents. Each morning there are

breakfasts to make, lunches to packand extracurricular schedules to track-- all while trying to get to work on time. So, how do you navigate the morningchaos and hold onto your sanity? Withthese helpful tips, you can make yourback-to-school mornings easier:

    1. Stick to a strict bedtime schedule.According to the Mayo Clinic, school-age children need 10-11 hours of sleepeach night. Making sure kids are wellrested will help avoid oversleepingand wasted time getting them out ofbed each morning.

is finished, and lay out school outfitsprior to bedtime for the next day.Thisshortens the list of morning choresand adds a few extra minutes of rest. Also, dont wait until early morning topack a rushed lunch with little nutritionvalue. Preparing the night beforehandenables parents to pack food withnutrients and vitamins, not just potatochips and snack packs. For evenbetter efficiency, plan lunches a weekahead.

    3. Find a quick and balanced breakfastoption. Not many parents have time foreggs and pancakes each morning, butthere are quick, quality alternatives.Stock up on cereals that kidswill enjoy

and are high in fiber, folic acid, iron, and vitamin C. Try Malt-O-Meal forfamil favorite varieties acked with

whole grains. As an added bonus,Malt-O-Meal is available in resealablebags, which reduces the amountof packaging consumers have todispose of or recycle by 75 percent.(BagTheBox.com)

    4. Make a weekly calendar of activities.Organize each family membersschedule to make sure kids are wherethey need to be at the correct times.Between extracurricular activities, like sports, clubs, study groups, jobsand friends, it can be a challenge toestablish any sort of routine. Set upcar pools in case some events overlap.Input alerts in your phone, and set analarm for each to avoid temporarymental lapses.
