Following Your GutBy Crystal Willms

If your gut is hinting that you have important information to share with others, it’s probably right. You’ve likely walked a path at some point that exposed you to new and astonishing information. It’s to be expected that someone walking the path behind you would appreciate your guidance before they reach the end of the pathway themselves. “Why couldn’t I have met you 15 miles back? It would have made my life so much easier!”

I had this very thought about myself. The twenty-six years old me, which I

refer to as Crystal Version 2002, would have jumped for joy to have met and learned from Crystal Version 2005. To this day, I still question why I didn’t cross paths with someone who had most of the right information, like Crystal Version 2005, at the right time. Surely someone out there knew what Crystal Version 2002 needed to know, but finding that someone felt like an impossible task.

Eleven years ago, I was unpredictably propelled into a caregiver role when my common-law spouse was severely brain injured in a motorcycle accident. The drama of this tragedy continued for over two years. By the time we chose to end our relationship, I was Crystal Version 2005. In between those years, my reality consisted of trying to avoid caregiver burn-out, sampling poverty and accepting charity, losing some friends and seeking new ones, dealing with challenging family dynamics, searching for empathy through groups and counseling, struggling to learn the ways of the health care system and discovering that I had to live with a new person while becoming a new person myself.

It took me until 2008 to trust my gut and embrace the fact that this life experience is valuable enough to turn into a career assisting and educating others. Crystal Version 2008 knew that Version 2005 should be actively working with people similar to Version 2002. They are born every day and my company, Headway Coaching International, was launched for this reason. If I can help one caregiver or person with acquired brain injury feel less guilty, crazy, depressed, angry, scared, powerless, resentful or alone, I’m doing my job. If I can educate the public and positively change how they treat caregivers and individuals with acquired brain injury, I’m fulfilling my purpose.

How often do you measure the magnitude of your knowledge? How often does your gut tell you that you’re capable of being influential? If you’re getting this message, act on it. You don’t have to start a business based on your wisdom, but you can volunteer to impact someone else’s journey. What seems like old news to you now could be important enough to transform another’s path from a rough road to a paved highway.

Winter 2014 5

When we started this magazine last summer, the odds were against us. In fact, when we did some research about starting a magazine publication and one of the first things we came across read, “rule one about publishing a magazine, DON’T DO IT!”

Well, we did it anyway! Our first issue hit the stands in October and the feedback was fantastic. In this digital age, it seems that many people still like to pick up a glossy publication, flip through it at their leisure and even keep it around to refer back to from time to time.

The experience of publishing Trifecta was definitely a step outside of our comfort zone, but you can only achieve success when you do just that. If you are always comfortable maintaining the status quo, nothing will change. If you want to make changes in your life, you must get used to being uncomfortable. You must learn to take risks and try something new. You can’t expect to see different results when you keep repeating the same old patterns.

A new year is a new beginning, so take a chance, try something new, be uncomfortable and see what happens.

Massage for MotherBy Jill Burk

Ali was rushing in the door with barely time to organize a very quick dinner before running back out the door to take her daughter, Jen, to Soccer when her phone rang. It was the third phone call from her mom that day, and she was tempted to let it go to voicemail.

When she picked up the phone, her mom, instead of sounding distressed and tentative actually sounded a little bit chipper.

“That lady came today” she said, “The one you brought to meet me on the weekend.”

“For your massage? Her name is Jasmine. How do you feel?” Ali asked, as she scooped dinner out of the slow cooker.

“It felt so nice, and I had a really good nap after, I feel pretty good actually and my neck feels much better”

“Oh mom, I am so glad, that is such good news”

Three weeks later Ali was dreading her visit with her mom. She had sounded more like herself on the phone, but during her last visit (which somehow was two weeks ago already), all her mom could do was cry. Ali’s mom couldn’t believe all her books were gone, even though she hadn’t opened most of them in years and she said she hated the place “they had put her” like it was Ali’s fault that her mom was too frail to be on her own any more. She could hardly get out of bed some days she was in so much pain.

When Ali arrived at Aging Oaks that day, she couldn’t find her mom until one of the nurses explained she could find her in the garden. Amazed, Ali went off to collect her mother, but when she got outside, found her mom getting a massage in the shade of the gazebo. She had forgotten it was her mother’s massage day. Mary’s eyes were closed, but the massage therapist, Jasmine, looked up and winked.

Mary sighed, and said “You girl, have magic in your hands. I swear the only time my neck and back feel any good at all is when you are here”. Then she giggled and said ”everyone is sooo jealous when you come to see me”

Ali’s mouth dropped, her mom hadn’t laughed like that in a while. Not that she blamed her. She knew her mom’s arthritis hurt all the time. She also knew Mary missed her independence, her house and she even missed her husband, even though she used to often remark being married was just like having another child.

Jasmine leaned over, told Mary in a quiet voice they were done for today, but promised she would be back on Wednesday.

When Jasmine first met with Ali and Mary she had explained, that older adults do better with shorter sessions, about 30 minutes, and having sessions more frequently. The skin is fragile, muscles are less developed and older adults sometimes are prone to bruising.

They had agreed on two appointments a week. Which also meant that twice a week, Mary got an extra visitor who in addition to being really lovely, was also using her “magic fingers” to gently relax tense and sore

muscles in Mary’s back, neck, shoulders and legs. It was a win for Mary, who loved the extra attention as well as the massage, a win for Ali who just wanted her mom to feel better and enjoy her life as much as possible. And it was a win for Ali’s brother Greg, who felt guilty that he was so far away and couldn’t see his mom.

After Jasmine left, Ali and her mom stayed out in the courtyard, enjoying the fall day and chatting easily for an hour. And when it was time to go, instead of her mom crying about being left in this “horrible place” just gave her a kiss on the cheek and said she would talk to her the next day. Ali left feeling lighter, relieved and more relaxed then she had in ages.

Like Ali, many women have beloved parents that are struggling with aging; finding a balance between caring for parents, work, children and all their activities and trying to maintain personal relationships, is less about balance and more about circus quality juggling.

Massage therapy can help, especially if you can find a therapist or company that will visit them at home.

Massage has been shown to decrease depression, symptoms of serious disease that affect the elderly, like MS and Parkinson, to aid with mobility, and increase the functioning of the immune system. It releases those feel good hormones, serotonin and endorphins that contribute to feelings of well-being and improved sleep. For older or frail adults, just like for everyone else, massage can be a very meaningful addition to the wellness regime.

Self-fulfilling ProphecyBy Toni Topilka

Do you believe in miracles? When you visualize yourself in a position to accomplish the unimaginable it is not just possible, it is probable. I will share with you my first major breakthrough using this theory which dates back to Roman times.

Back in the day when I was a youthful entrepreneur in small town Alberta, I was a small-business owner with a Visual Communications company. I was 25 years old and spent my days designing business cards, resumes and menus in a busy tourist town.

One day I went for a hair appointment. My hairdresser told me she’d had a dream about me, that I had started a magazine. Since I had some local newspaper experience and knew just enough about that business to be dangerous, the wheels started turning while in her chair.

I got back to my little office, which was a one-room reception and production arrangement, and I printed out the name she had dreamed of - Jasper Magazine - on 8 1/2” by 11” paper and I taped it to my door.

By and by my business clients began asking me: what is this Jasper Magazine? I explained I was thinking about launching a bi-weekly magazine and might they be interested in advertising in it. Before long I found myself making a plan, putting together prices for advertising and gathering costs for printing.

I borrowed $700 from my father for my inaugural issue and published within a month of the very idea. Two weeks later I sent my father a $700 cheque and I was on my own. What began as a little pony tab became a much larger paper, with a name change to the Jasper Free Press, and the addition of an entire Entertainment section including TV listings and comics. Back in 1993 this was a big deal since internet was fledgling and I had to download these features from US syndicates with dial-up – well you can imagine the time and effort this took. The outcome was that I became a successful newspaper publisher because I had an idea given to me and I ran with it.

Did I know what I was doing when I taped that paper to my door? The answer is yes, as I was already a student of energy at that age, and I was open to any outcomes that moved me forward to its achievement. My hairdresser had a premonition that kick-started me into action.

The results of Self-fulfilling Prophecy are as real as you want them to be. Put the energy out there. Cast out your vision to the universe. Watch the results become real. Put yourself in the situation I describe above - with any idea, concept, outcome you might have for yourself - and watch it work.

Brightest Blessings,

Toni Topilka, Intuitive Tarot Card Reader, Dowser, Reiki Master(aka Madame Antoinette)

Loving FreedomBy Jenna Stuckey

What is love?

I had a client this week who asked me that exact thing. Given it was a life coaching session, I replied by asking my client for their definition. The expectations encompassed in that four letter word are completely individual and I started thinking how unique love is to each of us.

Often love is described as comfort, trust, security or kindness. A very wise woman once told me that love meant freedom. I’ve come to agree. What is love if not freedom of judgment, control, manipulation, expectation and abuse?

If we don’t love with freedom, we love with conditions and conditional love can’t really be called love at all.

So often in our relationships we let our own insecurities and ego stand in the way of an incredible experience. We see the people we love as extensions of ourselves and we expect them to act in a way that is pleasing to us.

Don’t embarrass me. Make me comfortable. Reassure me. Make me happy. Pay attention to me. Give me security. Don’t make me angry. Don’t disappoint me.

Think about the expectations you currently have on the people in your life. What about when you take all those expectations and conditions away? All you have left is… love.

It takes time to sink into the idea that we can love without controlling. Love doesn’t mean ownership and the people you love are not an extension of you.

Think about what you expect from love in your life. “She should call me every day,” for a simple example. Now ask WHY that is necessary. What does it mean if she doesn’t call every day?

Before you place an expectation on someone else, understand why you need it.

You might be surprised to realize the love, comfort, security and trust you’re truly seeking is your own.

Take some time to imagine being loved and loving with freedom. It is my belief there is nothing greater in the world.

Jenna Stuckey is a 20-something navigating life, work and love. She founded Totality Coaching in 2010 on the principle that we are all whole and complete and have the answers we need to live an incredible, fulfilled life; sometimes we just need a little reminding of how capable and talented we are.

What Are We Learning So Far?By Vikki MacKinnon

One of the strongest and most impactful numbers in your profile is your life path number. The life path is a powerful vibration for all of us because it tells so much about the road we must travel, and the twists and turns, setbacks and breakthroughs that we will experience along that road.

As we all know life on Earth is a school and every part of our life here deals with learning certain lessons. The nature of our lessons can be found in several important aspects of your

numerology profile, but as a core number, your Life Path provides insight into the themes of your most powerful lessons. In fact there are some numerologists who refer to this as the Life Lesson Number.

To find your life path number, add up your month, day and year of birth. (Be sure to add your full year, for example, 1976, not /76.)

January 8, 1951 is calculated like this: 1+8+1+9+5+1=25, 2+5=7This person has a 7 life path.

In numerology we keep adding the digits together until we have a one digit number, unless the number we have is an 11, 22, or 33.

January 13, 1961 is calculated like this: 1+1+3+1+9+6+1=22This person has a 22 life path.

There are twelve possible life path numbers, and four different types or stages of learning. We can refer to the first stage of learning, Life Paths, or “life Lessons” 1, 2, and 3 as: “All About Me”

Life Path 1: Learning about myself and who I am. Getting clear on what I want and believing in myself enough to go after it. Example: Sammy Davis Jr.

Life Path 2: Learning about significant individuals in our lives, what they bring out in us, and what we bring out in them. Trusting our intuition. Example: Prince Philip

Life Path 3: Learning to sing our song and speak our truth. Expressing ourselves creatively. Finding ways to be seen and appreciated. (This can be a very fertile stage.) Example: Hilary Clinton

The second stage in our learning, Life Paths 4, 5, and 6, can be referred to as: “Me and the World I Live In”

Life Path 4: Learning to live and work within a degree of structure. Learning to respect laws and conventions that help society function. Attaining goals through diligent effort. Example: Bill Gates

Life Path 5: Learning to communicate and be persuasive. Satisfying our curiosity about the world. Learning to live in the moment and savour worldly experiences. (The word “LIFE” is a 5 word.) Example: Abraham Lincoln

Life Path 6: Learning to care for others. Accepting roles and responsibilities within our family and our community. Creating harmony in our relationships and our environment. Example: John Lennon

The third stage in our learning, Life Paths 7, 8, and 9, can be referred to as: “Me and My Spirituality”.

Life Path 7: Learning to go within, connect with our inner self and our Higher Self. Strengthening our faith and learning to be alone without being lonely. “I am ENOUGH”. Example: George Harrison

Life Path 8: Learning about the spiritual laws of abundance, that all abundance comes from the Universe, and that we can tap into it by taking action, walking in integrity, and following Universal laws. “As Above So Below”. Example: Norman Vincent Peale

Life Path 9: Learning to feel and express love and compassion toward our fellow human beings and all other creatures who share our planet. “We are ALL ONE”. Example: Mahatma Gandhi

Not every soul will experience a life path in the Master Numbers, 11, 22, and 33. We can refer to this stage of learning as “Me and My Assignment”.

Life Path 11: Learning to use our power and energy in positive, life affirming ways. Setting standards and walking our talk. Example: Prince William

Life Path 22: Learning to refine our vision, to bring big ideas into tangible form, to create lasting value. Example: Margaret Thatcher

Life Path 33: Learning to be courageous and outspoken in pursuit of fairness for all. Turning great love into powerful and far reaching action. Example: Dale Carnegie

Of course, within each of those huge themes there are many smaller lessons that are more easily understood and acted upon when we examine your life path number within the context of other aspects of your profile. It is extremely important to know your individual life path number, but it is also important to remember that when we can see your entire number profile we are able to find your unique formula for personal and professional success.

What is Making Changes Association?

Making Changes Employment Association of Alberta, also known as Making Changes Association, is a vibrant organization that provides relevant programs, services and resources to empower women in transition. Our goal is to help women build confidence and skills so that they can participate more fully in the community. Making Changes assists over 1,600 women each year to build a better future for themselves and their families.

We proudly fulfill our mission of empowering women in transition by providing:

• Focused programs for women in transition to enable them to enter the workforce and become self-sufficient

• Valuable pre-employment training for immigrant women• No-cost new and gently used business clothing for unemployed

and underemployed women with financial barriers.• Fashionable and functional clothing for teenage girls to meet

their school and recreational needs

Making Changes was incorporated as a not for profit society in 1996, however, a rich history of programs aimed at women in transition dates back as far as 1981. Our strength lies in our rootedness in community and in building collaborative partnerships that create a more inclusive range of opportunities for women in transition. Our achievements are directly related to committed and talented volunteers and staff members, donors and community partners. In developing new ways to deepen the impact of our services, we also seek ways to identify and address the emerging needs of women in transition and collaborate with other stakeholders to

address those needs.

VisionEmpowering women to make meaningful contributions to the community.

MissionAs a registered charity, Making Changes is a community of women helping women through life transition by providing them with skills and resources to support their pursuit of meaningful work.

Making Changes has three programs: the Walk-In Closet program, My Best Friend’s Closet and the Employment and Life Skills program. In this issue we will focus on the Walk-In Closet:

Our Walk-In Closet Program provides ninety minute individual consultations on professional business attire, to women facing financial barriers who want to join the work force, return to school or engage in volunteer opportunities. In addition to information on business culture and appropriate dress, participants are offered gently used clothing and accessories, at no cost, to help them look and feel their best. Women of all ages seek service from the Walk-In Closet and have two things in common – they are financially challenged and they need appropriate business attire for interviews, new jobs, school or volunteer work. Participants are referred by community serving agencies, pre-employment training programs or post secondary institutions in Calgary and surrounding areas or may self-refer if they meet appropriate criteria. In 2012, 1,560 women facing financial barriers accessed our service. Of these women, 25% were repeat participants. Participants are welcome to return to the Walk-In Closet for a second visit to build up their wardrobes.

What each participant is entitled to receive:• 3 to 4 outfits (2 pieces, plus a blouse, shirt or sweater)• 1 seasonal coat (in the winter includes scarf, gloves and hat)• 2 pairs of shoes (in the winter includes one pair of boots and

one pair of shoes)• 1 handbag• 2 pairs of pantyhose, depending on supply• 2 bras, 2 underwear• A selection of cosmetics• 2 or 3 pieces of jewellery• 1 or 2 belts

Dear Madame AntoinetteTarot Card Reading and DowsingDear Madame Antoinette is a regular and exclusive column in Trifecta Magazine answering your question using tarot cards, intuition and dowsing rods.

If you would like a question answered by Madame Antoinette, please forward your requests to [email protected]. The more specific your question is, the more specific your answer will be. Feel free to give some detail, but please keep your question to one paragraph. First person questions only, please do not write in on behalf of someone else. For entertainment purposes only.

Dear Madame Antoinette,

How will my husband’s illness affect my family?

-G.E.; British Columbia

Dear Reader,

What I can see about your husband (King of Swords) is that he is a very good business man who, when on his game, is able to communicate well and wields his power responsibly. When he’s off his game, he uses the other side of his blade which can cut deeply – meaning that he can use his exceptional vocabulary and quick wit to hurt or hinder those around him. The problem is that there have been many disagreements (3 of Swords) and this is causing problems for the family.

In the past few years this man has become weak willed and soft minded (King of Pentacles RV). Prior to this, he was capable of great insight, and this came naturally for him. Where he was once highly respected, he has fallen. In the last 6 months there has been trouble with over-confidence. This has caused a good deal of inaction and inactivity (Ace of Staves RV).

What can happen in the future is that there can be self-ishness and dishonesty (King of Cups RV). This is a con-ditional card, meaning that this outcome is based on the decisions he chooses to make in the near future. If he can overcome the illness this man is fully capable of making intelligent decisions, and being the perfect husband; the King of his castle, if you will. In the next 6 months your husband needs to be honest with himself, to face himself in the mirror (The Empress) and here is where he will need his wife – to nurture him and coax him forward with the love of a mother for a child.

I cannot tell from your question where your husband is with his mind set, however I can say that (Ace of Cups) his state of mind appears to be positive with the intent to initiate a new and stable future. His goal is domestic stability in the home.

Your husband’s environment is filled with obstacles. There is a battle to overcome problems. He feels defen-sive (5 of Staves). His family, friends and colleagues see this, and that can be a negative influence on him. The ad-vice would be to surround him with positive influences.

He has the hope that things can go back to the way things were, back to happier times (6 of Cups). He yearns for the happy memories. He wishes to go back to when things were good. This is a healthy intention for him to keep in his mind, since the very thought of it means he hasn’t lost hope.

The final outcome is that there may a need for a time of recovery. A time of repose, retreat and healing. (4 of Swords) There may need to be hospitalization in order to assist with the recovery so that the he may regroup, and with that healing the actions needed to reclaim former victories can be activated.

NOTES:There are 3 Kings in this reading, which show that this is a mature man in his late 40’s or older. I see 2 Aces, which strongly indicates that starting over is what is needed here… it’s a case of potential vs. obstacles.

DOWSING RESULT:If given the choice to heal himself, Will he choose to do so? YESWill he make the decision easily? NODoes he choose to make the decision at this time? NOWill he choose to make the decision in the future? YESBest month to achieve results: May/June 2014

The Purpose of Aligning Yourself with a Good Real Estate AgentBy Angela Hendry

In today’s high tech world we have access to a myriad of information at our finger tips. There are hundreds of websites providing pictures, details and more for the buying and selling process. So, why can’t you just do it yourself and save some money? Well you can, but you may not save as much as you think and it’s a heck of a lot of work.

The value of a Realtor® comes from their use of personal and professional resources and experience over and above what technology provides. This will ultimately save you money, time and energy.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

• Ask friends, family or co-workers for referrals of a good agent.

• Ensure what you are paying for is what will get your house sold. What is the level of service provided? If buying, do they take the time to properly assess your needs?

• Does the Realtor work the business in a full time capacity?

• How long has he/she been in business? Who will you communicate and be working with? Who is on the Team?

• What other educational courses and designations do they possess and continue to invest in?

• Can they provide references?

• How do you feel about them? Their appearance, manners and personality will tell you a lot about how they will engage with others.

A good Realtor will be like a coach, educating and assisting you to ensure you are making a sound decision both financially and emotionally. They will treat you like you are of utmost importance and guide you through every step so you are making good choices. They will become an important part of your transaction acting in your best interests.

We all hear horror stories about bad experiences, but hopefully with a little diligence you will find someone who will become an excellent resource for life. Someone who will provide you with continuous service long after the boxes are unpacked and the signs are down.

Angela Hendry, Realtor®, CCS®, ABR® Royal LePage Solutions

BEEF STROGANOFFPrep Time: 25 minutesCook Time: 9 hoursServes 6

INGREDIENTS

1-1/2 lbs. beef sirloin tip, cut into 1” cubes1 onion, chopped3 cloves garlic, minced1 (8-oz.) package mushrooms, sliced1/2 tsp. salt1 tsp. dried thyme leaves1/8 tsp. pepper1 bay leaf1-1/2 cups beef broth1/2 cup red wine (optional)2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce8 oz. sour cream2 tablespoons Dijon mustard1/4 cup flour1/4 cup water

DIRECTIONS

Combine everything except sour cream, mustard, flour, and water in a 3-1/2 quart slow cooker. Cook on low heat for 8-10 hours (high for 4-5 hours). Remove and discard bay leaf.

Combine sour cream, mustard, flour, and water in medium bowl and mix well, using a whisk. Add 1 cup of the hot liquid from the crockpot to the sour cream mixture and stir until combined. Return this mixture to the crockpot and stir well. Cover crockpot and cook on high for 20-30 minutes until thickened and bubbly. Taste it; you may want to add more salt, pepper, or thyme. Serve over hot cooked egg noodles. If you have a new hotter cooking crockpot, check the beef at 6 hours on low. And do NOT boil together the flour and sour cream mixture before adding it to the crockpot. All that does is waste the thickening power of the flour. If the sauce isn’t thick enough for you, add more flour dissolved in a little water.

After the Honeymoon PhaseBy Scott Clark

Why does the honeymoon phase end? We attract these amazing people into our lives that we fall in love with, only to discover one day, that most of what we felt has been lost.

Like night and day, we barely notice the amazing feelings and time together in the beginning had faded, and instead choose to carry on with this illusive comfort that things are still what they were.

As time together increases, we can let go and be more our own authentic selves. And of course it is a blessing to have any individual in our life in which we can be completely free with and true to ourselves. And as such we begin sharing our stories of worst case bathroom breaks and treat each other to the occasional dutch oven. You look over and your lover is picking their nose but it doesn’t phase you because you are picking yours too. We can leave our dirty dishes out once again and hope someone else will get to them.

Freedom does come when you can be who ever it is you were always meant to be. But it is ironic that we have never become more annoying to someone else when we decide to start being ourselves. More ironic is that we have never tried to change someone so much as the ones we fall in love with. The ones we let get close to our heart. So what is it about setting into our true Self around someone that the honeymoon phase ends and we begin the unconscious task of changing our partner to fit our perfect image of what they should be like.

We notice everything under the sun that annoys us in this person, and gradually over time it accumulates to the point of anger, resentment, distrust, jealousy, unhappiness, abuse, guilt, struggle or pain. It sounds a little foreign and somewhat hard to accept for many of us, but what we judge in others we judge in ourselves. It seems a little impractical to attempt to change one person in our life (let alone multiple), to adjust to exactly how I think they should live, just to make me happy.

So in other words, if my partner is doing things the way I believe they should be done and acting the way I think they should act, then I can be happy. But the second I recognize a pet peave, it strikes a cord with my own weakness inside, I jump to judge them and will fight to have them never again make my feelings feel icky the way they just did.

How about we see relationships from a different angle. Often we attract our polar opposites. There are greater reasons why honeymoon phase is so amazing and many of these flaws remain hidden for later. The bonding experience in the honeymoon phase creates enough of a foundation to allow us to value the relationship so that when their ‘flaws’ are exposed, we feel inclined to work through them and make the relationship better than ever.

Struggle comes in when we constantly play victim and assume it is our partner that must change, rather than ourselves. We cannot force change upon people to meet our own selfish expectations, but we can be entirely happy with ourselves first. We can continue to get outside of our story and value our partner as their own individual with their own great uniqueness, just as we did when we initially met.

So as such, it is our own great responsibility to understand why the cords of pain are played when someone before us isn’t acting how we are expecting them to act. If we take that close look in the mirror, we will begin to understand that it is our own reflection that is being reflected back to us through our relationships.

If it is trust that lacks, perhaps I shall learn to instill trust more, so my partner feels they can be honest and expressive rather than hiding and scheming.

If it is sex that lacks, perhaps I should offer more sex so my partner feels more sexy, attractive, loved, and desirable.

If it is commitment that lacks, perhaps I should commit to spending more time with my partner to prevent them from feeling lonely.

If it is compassion that lacks, perhaps I should listen more, and see their beauty in their soul, and do my best to always see it from their side and hear them when they are needing to be heard.

Many of us are afraid to look in the mirror. It is those brave souls who wish to bring an end to the pain and trauma caused in relationships that will finally ask the question “Why do I keep attracting the same thing over and over?”. It is the beginning of the journey of self discovery, and the realization that they are the cause and effect of their experiences, and they hold the key to solving the mysteries of darkness. It is those very same brave souls who take the responsibility to work on themselves rather than playing the victims blame they once threw out into the world.

We must not forget that what we throw out into the universe we get back. And pertaining to our relationships, it is as simple as looking at all of the amazing things we would like to carry forward for the ride. You want more love, give more love, you want more sex, give more sex, you want more communication, start communicating more.

Relationships are beautiful. They reveal the mirrors necessary for our own growth and expansion, and everyone of our partners has been the perfect one ‘soulmate’ to reveal this.

Our relationships hold the beauty and power to feel complete and whole. We only have to be willing to look within ourselves and know that if things are not going the way I want them to look, then I have the amazing opportunity to find something new to heal about myself. And it is this perspective that grants the honeymoon phase to last forever. Fairy tails do exist.

GlobalFest - Celebrating CalgaryIt’s the middle of August. Kids are excited (or not) to be heading back to school. There are just enough days left for boredom to start, but not necessarily enough to really “get out” as Albertans love to do. And, the forthcoming monotony of routines and schedules is already providing you with mixed feelings and slight anxiety.

Cue superhero music. Enter GlobalFest.

For the last 12 years, GlobalFest has been hosting families of all ages, sizes and backgrounds at Elliston Park in the community of Greater Forest Lawn.

Don’t let the “Deerfoot wall” deter you from crossing over - the area is jam packed with multicultural gems of deliciousness from across the globe. The diversity that Calgary is so proud of is seen all along 17th (International) Avenue SE thanks to its residents, visitors and foodies. Transforming Elliston Park into a land of worldly sights, smells, sounds and tastes, GlobalFest hosts two great festivals every summer - the OneWorld Festival and the Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival.

Since 2003, GlobalFest has been welcoming thousands of people through its gates at 6:00pm to take in the culturally themed OneWorld Festival. The OneWorld Village is truly a showcase of Calgary’s multiculturalism. With over a dozen pavilion tents to peruse, one could reconnect with their ancestral roots with the likes of the Scottish, Ukrainian, Mexican and Philippine cultural pavilions, or explore lands like the Caribbean, Brasil and Iran through cultural artifacts and conversation with someone from these beautiful foreign lands. And if these sights aren’t enough, The Village Stage offers three hours of locally based entertainment, every night, right in the Village.

And don’t forget to check out the Night Market; it’s full of local artisans. Get some henna done, pick up a quirky graphic tee, or grab a cute pair of coconut shell earrings. You can even order some Stella & Dot! But all this traveling, dancing and shopping can make any tummy grumble.

Next stop: OneWorld Café and International Bar. Here, alongside concessionaires scattered throughout the park (featuring fair favourites like roasted corn, ice cream and waffles), you will find every cultural cuisine one could crave or want to try for the first time. Classic Poutine, Jerk chicken, Indian Aloo Gobi (potato and cauliflower), Mediterranean Beef Moussaka (a lasagna-esque layered dish), Indonesian Rendang (coconut beef), etc... the list goes on! Or, if you want to go the picnic route, you’re welcome to bring in your own eats of choice.

Date night? Come to the International Bar for a beverage. The selection changes on occasion, but you’re guaranteed to find fine wines, international brews and delicious highballs. The famous Cherry Bomb, for example, is a dangerously simple mix of amaretto and cranberry juice. But I digress. Date night with the whole family? Head over to the north side of the park.

After passing through sponsor tents full of giveaways and contesting opportunities, you’ll hit kid central. The Children’s Village has lots of green space for running around, a minimum of two bouncy houses and lots of different arts and crafts being offered every night. Partial and full face painting is available, making some look like beautiful fairies, and others like ferociously (adorable) tigers. Rawr!

Show time. Grab a hot cup of coffee and some mini donuts - the fireworks are about to begin!

As stage emcees acknowledge festival sponsors from main stage, friends, couples, first daters and families alike navigate the north and south seating bowls, trying to remember where their blankets and chairs were left like needles in a haystack amongst the crowd.

The Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival invites four countries every year to present 22-minute pyromusicals to festival patrons. Pyromusical means fireworks choreographed to music. I promise you - see it once and you’ll be hooked. Get caught in the emotion of a dramatic Spanish love song, or sing along to songs you know from back in the day and today, while your kids (and significant other) lose their minds watching comets and

double ascension flying saucers dance in the sky, while nautical shells spin like ballerinas over Lake Elliston.

This year’s festival has Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and France coming to strut their stuff. If you manage to come to all four shows, you can vote for your favourite and be entered to win some great prizes. You can also vote for your favourite Cultural Pavilion and Ethnic Food Booth!

And then, of course, there’s the awe-mazing Finale. It’s not included in the public voting (it would win by default!); it’s the organizers’ way of saying “thank you” to everyone who comes to the festival to celebrate Calgary’s diversity and multiculturalism. We’re proud of it and you should be too!

Before you know it, the show is over, the smoke is clearing and people are packing up to go home. In less than four hours, you’ve traveled (and possibly nibbled through) the world, learned some new dance moves, perhaps made some new friends and were immersed in the beauty that is Calgary’s people.

You’ll fall in love with GlobalFest. The kids will love it. As will Aunty and Uncle. And Oma and Opa. Don’t forget Lolo and Lola. See you in August!

GlobalFest 2014 runs August 14, 16, 19, 21 and 23. For more information, please visit globalfest.ca. GlobalFest’s mandate as a not-for-profit society is to produce an inclusive, world class, multi-faceted arts and culture festival that celebrates and showcases cultural diversity and artistic excellence within our communities and across the globe.

If Meditation Offers Us a Solution, Isn’t That Enough?

By Dale Miles

Does anyone remember 30 years ago, when computers were just starting to come into offices and the promises we heard from the computer industry?

I remember we were promised with the introduction of computers into our lives, that all of us would have MORE leisure time Yes. We were told over and over that based on our current standards of productivity remaining the same, that our work weeks would

be shortened, our productivity would improve and we would have more time for the important things like family, friends, health and most importantly, quiet time with ourselves.

Have we been fooled? The truth is now we have much less time for all those things promised. In fact, we have come along willingly as we have all developed an extreme addiction to fast. We communicate faster, leaving behind the graceful art of speech and written communication, to where it has dwindled into a collection of acronyms and smiley faces.

The pleasurable experience of the family dinner has gone the way of the ubiquitous, nutrition free, fast food scarf and cram. We want faster internet service, faster computers, faster cars, faster service and well... faster everything.

Obesity, divorce, domestic violence, heart disease and intolerance for anything slow, is steadily on the rise as a result of our fascination and appetite for all things fast. If the truth be told, our fascination with fast and quick is, quite literally, killing us and our chance to find true happiness.

Because the only place... yes the media will scream, but the only place to find true happiness is by slowing things down, seeking stillness of the mind and moving our focus inside through meditation.

Why mediation? Because finding quiet inside the eye of the crazy fast paced hurricane that the world around us has become is the only answer.

Now, immediately a million arguments to the contrary arise. The auto manufacturers have promised us true satisfaction with life if only we buy the one thing that will make our lives complete, this year’s model of their brand new vehicle, but don’t they say the same thing every year? The smart phone manufacturers will assert the same arguments as each new model is launched. In fact, life might even be... well inferior, now that there is something new on the market and in the hands of your neighbors and co-workers.

All the fitness centers promise us that true happiness will be ours, if we lose weight and look better in our brand new work out gear, which by the way, clothing manufacturers also infer will bring us happiness. If only we could squeeze ourselves into this years version of their product.

We are inundated with the constant argument from sellers of products, that happiness can somehow only be achieved by acquiring “things” or experiencing physical sensations like those from food, sex, speed or softness. All of these offers point to happiness coming superficially and only from outside ourselves, distracting us from the only source for true happiness... becoming aware of our true consciousness (our “atman”) inside our selves.

Most people are unaware of the concept of true happiness and instead, worship celebrity, wealth and the acquisition of material goods. Some people will even tell you that the people who say “money can’t buy happiness”, just aren’t shopping in the right places.

Somehow we believe that even though we are not happy with what we have, more will make us happy. The argument loses steam quickly when you realize that the tragedy of suicide and the woes of depression are not just restricted to the poor and those without “things”. What a horrible irony it is to find that, after sacrificing friends, family, health and even our lives for money, that life is still as empty with it as without it. We have been sold a false and shallow bill of goods by media and a society that is based on consuming more – faster.

All is not lost however. There is hope. People are seeing past the superficial and looking for more. The acceptance of Yoga is a powerful example of this. While churches and religion are losing their hold on people, the quest for spirituality is on the rise. Whether people know it or not, yoga is much more a spiritual quest than a physical discipline. In fact, it is better described as a consciousness discipline.

While the West has taken yoga and attempted to modify it into their own westernized version of a shallow social and physical experience, the truth behind what Yoga is will not be ignored. The goal of yoga has little to do with the physical body, fitness or how we look in our yoga gear. The goal of yoga is to cease the fluctuations of the mind. The physical postures are a means to an end only, preparing the body with

strength, flexibility and cleansing, to be able to sit for long periods in contemplative meditation in order to achieve true happiness through stillness of the mind. Without a spiritual and moral foundation, true Yoga does not exist. In spite of our world, the message of Yoga is finding its way through into the mainstream of our lives and will not be silenced.

Meditation is the answer! This is not a new message. Yoga as a way of life and as a way to finding true happiness in our lifetime is a 5000 year old message. Yoga is the seed of all religion and spiritual practices today. The goal has always been to find happiness through the mastery of our physical desire, kindness and compassion to others,

Trifecta Magazine20

a connection with or spiritual source, a willingness and desire to just become an observer of life and a conscious detachment from the storm of thought within our tortured minds.

Now, modern science is proving through empirical testing and measurement, what the gurus of the distant past devoted their very lives to, that meditation is the unrivalled means to a happy life and a healthy body. While it was long thought that the brain ceased developing in the early teens, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is proving that it is actually possible to increase the grey matter of the brain through long periods of mediation. Studies of advanced meditators are yielding documented proof of both physical and systematic changes to the body that now prove benefits, both inside the individual and in our society, through meditation. Studies prove that sleep patterns greatly improve by meditating. Digestion, immune function, sexual function, clarity of thought, memory, retention, comprehension and an overall satisfaction with life have also been scientifically proven to improve through the practice of meditation. Studies on crime and regional violence have shown that groups meeting and meditating on compassion have measurably reduced acts of violence and aggression in their surrounding areas. Continuing studies continue to prove, time after time, benefits achieved through meditation that modern medicine has no alternative to. In fact recently a western schooled doctor of medicine recently wrote an article stating, that if Yoga was a “medicine”, it would be the most frequently prescribed of all drugs. Throughout all of our modern pharmaceutical medicine, there is no comparable remedy that offers all the benefits that Yoga/meditation offer.

So what is the problem? If meditation offers us a solution to end all suffering, isn’t that enough?

It would seem that the “lemming like” nature of humans is to ignore the truth and instead pursue pleasure and the immediate path of ease. It would seem that the truth has little power over most, while society continues to sweep us along in its storm of superficiality and turmoil. It would seem that those seeking stillness and happiness inside are a diminishing group. Fortunately, things are not always as they seem. There is a glimmer of hope.

People are changing, albeit slowly, but they are changing. A light is coming on in the darkness. Right now, it would seem that the real chance for sanity, stillness and developing our conscious awareness, is by the light shed by Yoga. As mentioned earlier, Yoga is thriving in the west. In fact, it is believed that more people in the western world now practice Yoga, then those that practice in Asia, the birthplace of Yoga. The people who are there for only the physical aspects of Yoga fade quickly, but many are finding an awakening of their spiritual “thirst” and are delving deeper into what yoga is intending to teach.....that the path to true happiness is inside, by achieving stillness of the mind through the practice of meditation.

Society is also actually starting to recognize this. In fact, some resorts are also recognizing this trend. Many hospitality centers that, just years ago, offered twenty four hour internet connectivity, are now advertising yoga, meditation rooms and “internet free zones” in their locations as the understanding is developing that constant internet connectivity interrupts the means to connect with one’s self. We were never intended to be working or on call, twenty four hours a day. Even large multi national corporations like Google and Microsoft are offering

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

INGREDIENTS

1 large butternut squash1/2 cup cream2 cups chicken stock2 cups water1 celery stalk, diced1/2 white onions, diced2 carrots, diced1/2 tsp cumin powder (optional)1 tsp red chili flakes (optional)1 tsp paprika2 bay leavessalt and pepper to taste1 tsp + 1 tbsp oil

DIRECTIONS

Pre-heat oven to 400°F. Cut the butternut squash in half, and core the middle. Remove all the seeds, brush the butternut squash with 1 tsp oil, and season with salt and pepper. Wrap the butternut squash in foil, and bake for 20 minutes.

While the butternut squash is baking, sauté onion, paprika, cumin and remaining oil in a large pot on medium heat (3-4 minutes). Add celery, carrots, and water and bring to a simmer. Remove butternut squash from the oven, and allow to come to room temperature. Carefully scoop the butternut squash away from the center, throwing away the peel. Add the butternut squash to the pot, along with chili flakes, bay leaves, and chicken stock. Bring to a boil and cook until all the vegetables are tender (20 minutes). Reduce heat and temper the cream by adding a small amount of the soup base to the cream, then adding the entirety back to the pot. Continue cooking on low heat for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool. Remove bayleaves, and carefully puree the soup with a handheld food processor. You can return the soup back to the stove and continue cooking on low, to allow the flavors to develop– the secret to great soup is slow cooking; its just better this way. Garnish with parsley and sour cream before serving.

“tech free” meditation rooms in their corporate offices. Even 15 minutes of meditation per day has been found to improve both productivity as well as the quality of the work done.

The challenge is however, that the path to freedom from suffering through meditation is not easy. Like any training of significance, it requires faith, determination, persistence and regular practice. The beginner practitioner will find that it is extremely difficult to detach from a mind that has always been in control. The mind and the ego will resent the loss of control and attempt to subtly influence the beginner to abandon their meditation discipline. Some of the reasoning will seem quite plausible.

“There is no time”“I am just not that type of person”“I just... can’t”“My mind is just too busy”“No one else I know does this”

The truth is, that we are society that is increasingly seeking immediate superficial gratification, so the concept of devoting yourself to a regular discipline with benefits that are as yet unseen, is moving strongly against the mainstream direction. We also have no celebrity examples for meditation, so we have no one to emulate. We cannot point to someone who has achieved true peace through meditation and say ”I want to be like them”. This is primarily due to the private and personal nature of the practice as well as the fact that we are not receptive to the benefits of calmness, kindness, compassion and clarity. Remember, we worship fast... quality and experiences are secondary.

All of these changes will challenge each of us on a very personal level. The lynchpins of our success in developing a meditation practice will come from a true belief in the value of those benefits as well in the belief in our worthiness of the effort. One of the main challenges is that our society has little value for intangibles such as kindness or compassion. It will continue to be an uphill battle for a very long time to come.

And so the simple question again comes to mind. If meditation offers us a solution to end all suffering, isn’t that enough? If not, what about... it just might make you a better, kinder person?

There is huge emphasis today on the symbolic and almost spiritual significance of certain numbers and their relationship to our daily lives. Many are captivated by the mystical connection between numbers or units of measurement, and various aspects of our lives in general.

My sense is that “12” is the number you need to know for 2014! “12” is a number of unique significance in many religions, faiths, and forms of spirituality all over the world, and in mythology. “12” is

the number you need to know, understand, and embrace as we move forward into 2014!

“12” is the number of publishers that rejected J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter manuscript when she was living on social assistance in the early 1990’s. Eventually it was picked up by Bloomsbury, and today Rowling is worth an estimated $1.5 billion, and the Harry Potter brand is worth an estimated $25 billion. J.K. Rowling went on to sell 450 million copies.

The lesson for us all is this: don’t give up... be tenacious in engaging your strengths... relentless in following your passions, and unyielding when you fall down! The number “12” teaches us the following lessons for 2014:

• Be Tenacious In Engaging Your Strengths – Discover your strengths, your unique shape and “LIFEFIT” as a person, and begin to live them! Fully embrace who and what you are, and live in alignment with yourself! Don’t allow the setbacks from your weaknesses hold you back. Don’t let the discouragements from not being as strong as you want to be to hold you back. Be tenacious in engaging your strengths. Steadfast. Resolute. Constantly feed and nourish yourself. Take time for you. In The Teaching Of The Buddhist Master, “Your breathing is your greatest friend. Return to it in all your troubles and you will find comfort and guidance.” Take time to breathe. To reflect. To self-nurture. Devote a tithe, 10% of your waking hours to self-care, self-nourishment, paying attention to yourself and to developing your strengths. You are 100% worth it in 2014 and every year!

• Be Relentless In Following Your Passions – Terri Guillemets said, “Chase down your passion like it’s the last bus of the night. Follow your passion, and success will follow you.” Resolve that 2014 will be a year of chasing your passions, rather than chasing success. When you chase success, often disappointment and bitterness is the result. When you chase your passions, success is often the result. Your faith box and self-mirror determine your whole life: what you think, feel, experience and do; what you create, grow, build and dream. You are thinking, feeling, experiencing and doing what your faith-box contains and what your self-mirror shows. You are creating, growing, building and dreaming what your faith-box allows and what your self-mirror permits. And all of this is tied into

In a world of bad drivers, fifty per cent divorce rates, bullying, drugs and all of the other bad things we tend to focus on each day, it’s not always easy to be grateful. Even if we wake up in a fairly good mood, by the time we reach the office, the kid’s school or wherever else we are headed for our day, it doesn’t take much to tick us off. That’s why it’s so important to get comfortable with being grateful and really it doesn’t even take a lot of time or effort.

Before you jump out of bed in the morning, take a moment and remind yourself what you are grateful for. It can be anything. It can be something as specific as being grateful to one person. You can be grateful to your husband for letting you stay in bed when the baby was crying through the night, or you can be grateful for something. Perhaps you are grateful that you have a job to get ready for and money in your bank account. Your gratitude can be very vague. You can be grateful that you are in good health, have supportive family or you can just be grateful for remembering to be grateful.

When you are moving through the motions of your morning routine, try to be grateful for the little things. Be grateful for clean water when brushing your teeth, be grateful for a safe shelter when folding the laundry, or be grateful for the groceries in your cupboard when you are preparing breakfast.

When you are in your car battling road rage and traffic, be grateful you have a reliable vehicle and be grateful you made it to your destination safely and soundly.

Once you get in the practise of expressing gratitude in certain situations instead of complaining, you will find it just starts to come naturally.

Being grateful is also contagious, if you are continually expressing yourself in a grateful way, others will be mindful of this and want to emulate your positive behaviour therefore becoming more happy themselves.

If you really want to practise the Art of Being Grateful, choose a month and commit to sending a gratitude note to one person each day. The note can be sent through regular mail, email or even a text message. It doesn’t have to be long, but should definitely be heartfelt.

Tell that person why you are grateful to have him or her in your life. You will not only feel so good about doing this, but you likely will make that person’s day, so it’s a win-win.

With Gratitude,

Cindy Drummond

all of us following our passions with full engagement and relentless focus!

• Be Unyielding When You Fall Down – We all fall down when we are seeking to walk, run and soar. If we are not falling, it is because we are not trying, not risking, and not stepping out. Henry Ford famously said that, “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently”. When you fall down, don’t yield, resign, or surrender. Simply get back up, learn from the event, and begin again, this time with greater insight and intelligence! Never walk in pride. Keep yourself constantly humble and needy. Keep your ego in check. Don’t have an inflexible agenda. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken. The power of humility is that it draws all the support and help you need to thrive and be successful. Pride and ego repel people. It discourages them from offering the help you may need, because you project that you do not need anything. Be like the Greek word for “meekness”, a war horse that is trained and powerful, yet under control. Benjamin Franklin said that, “A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.” The truth is that for many great leaders, humility is the missing ingredient…

“12” is the number you need to know for 2014. Be tenacious in engaging your strengths... relentless in following your passions, and unyielding when you fall down when you are living your dream!

Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

By Del Edwards

Whether you have decided to change career path or have found yourself without work after being with the same organization for a long time, transitioning to something or somewhere can be daunting and down right frightening!

Why? Making a change to something new is an ‘unknown’ in terms of outcomes and it involves taking a risk. It can feel uncomfortable, awkward and ultimately takes confidence that we may have difficulty finding. Sometimes, all this is

just too much so people don’t take action or make a change that they likely would benefit from in the long run.

When I immigrated here to Canada six years ago from the UK with my husband and two children I faced exactly that – or be more precise – we all faced exactly that – fear from the risk, discomfort for being somewhere unfamiliar and awkward. However, we still made the change and now, as Canadian Citizens, we are benefitting from it in leaps and bounds. One of the things we learned during what was one of the most stressful times we have faced as a family was that “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”– Neale Walsh

Thinking this and firmly believing we had made the right decision, we carried it through, however, there was many a time it felt like we had jumped off a cliff without a parachute!

So what have I learned that helped me that may help you to make a change?

Step 1 – Be PositiveFirst, we learned that whatever your circumstances and need for change, you need to see it as a positive - an opportunity to grow and move forward as opposed to something negative or something to avoid. Keeping your eye and mind on the end goal or ambition will help you stay positive – even when the going gets tough and the urge to give up is strong. All through the immigration process we stayed focused on the fact that we would be living in Canada with all its benefits as opposed to the barriers we faced on getting here. Your thoughts may well be the new job or environment you desire. Whatever your goals – keep your thoughts positive ones.

Step 2 – PlanSecond, we learned the importance of being organized. Once you have your goal or change in mind – Plan it and plan it well! Remember the following:

‘You cannot have everything you want but you can have anything you REALLY want, You just need to decide what it is and then plan your exit from your comfort zone’ – Jonathan Farrington

Our planning was three years in the making, but we benefitted from it none the less and changing career or moving job will be no different.

In order to know what you are facing, you need to plan. So what plans do you need to make when changing career?

The first thing you need to do is to decide what you REALLY want. You can do this by considering two things – what you like and what you dislike about your current role or situation;

Consider your role and consider some projects or some aspects of your role that have gone particularly well for you. What was energizing and motivating about those issues? Also consider the skills you have that you used to ensure those projects went well.

Then do the reverse, looking at your current or most recent role, consider some projects or aspects of it that didn’t go so well. What was demotivating or negative for you? Consider the skills that you needed to use more effectively or develop going forward.

Now ask yourself honestly:• What interests me the most in my field and what skills and strengths do

I currently have that can help me work with these interests?• What is important to me in my work? – think about your values and

what is important to you.• What are must haves for me in a job? e.g. flexible working• Do I have any limiting factors? – e.g. location, health or child care issues• Is it time for me to consider changing direction or organization and

looking at something completely new?

Answering some questions like this will help you decide what exactly it is you want from your next position and evaluate your options.

Step 3 – Take action steps towards your goalsDepending on what you decide, your initial action steps will be different. However, below are some suggestions of practical things you can do to start moving forward.

• Update your resume• Join LinkedIn• Take on new assignments in work for challenge and learning• Volunteer to widen your outlook and experience something new

• Attend seminars, conferences and networking events• Do some self- study with books, DVD’s or online• Enroll in appropriate college or university courses • Do research on the organizations you may like to work for

Now start planning for the long-term by considering the following points:• What skills and knowledge you want to acquire. How and when you will

gain them?• Consider what barriers and obstacles you may face. How you will

overcome them? Set deadlines and plan to get around them.

Remember with all your goals you need to be SMART to ensure success long-term.

S - Specific and StrategicM - Measurable and MeaningfulA - Achievable and AcceptableR - Realistic and ResourcedT - Time bound and Timely

Making any change is difficult, but facing your fears through planning, taking action and thinking positively does work, I am proof of that, so remember:

Good things come to those who wait… greater things come to those who get off their butt and do anything to make it happen.” - Unknown

I’m certainly glad I left my comfort zone.

Finding my Inner CompassBy Ramona Remesat

I thought I had it all: two wonderful children, a loving husband, an attractive and comfortable home, financial security so I could stay at home and raise my kids, a lifestyle that included travel and little extras and the blessing of health for everyone in my family. And yet, there I was, sitting at my kitchen table one cold Calgary winter’s day with tears streaming down my face and wondering if my life had any meaning at all. How on earth did I get to this place?

I knew having children was not going to be a walk in the park. I am not that naive. In addition, friends and relatives had all shared their stories of sleep deprivation, diaper explosions, sibling rivalry and the like but nobody ever, not even once, talked about what really HAPPENS when you have children. You become invisible. We wear so many labels in life. We are someone’s ‘mom’, someone’s ‘wife’, maybe even someone’s ‘employee’ but have you asked yourself, “who am I”?

My crisis that day at the kitchen table was rooted in not knowing who I truly WAS. I felt so very blessed to be able to be at home with my children but yet I felt there was something MORE I was meant to do with my life. I easily said goodbye to my years in the public relations and marketing world of corporate Canada because it wasn’t who I was. In fact, I was so very happy to leave that all behind. Yet, in shedding that, it created space for something new to take root inside of me. That ‘something’ was the desire and drive to be of service to others. I knew I was meant to teach and help others, however not knowing how I was supposed to accomplish this, was what was eating me up inside.

Since then, I have talked to many women who went through similar situations. They were so disconnected from their true path and purpose in life, that they became numb, depressed, and even felt hopeless. As desperate as they were to find answers, their numbness made them literally incapable of connecting to their inner wisdom and guidance to show them the way.

Have you been here yourself?

It’s sad really, that humanity has gotten away from remembering that we all carry an internal GPS that guides us in the right direction. Some people call it an inner knowing, Divine guidance, intuition or our gut feelings. Whatever you call it, it’s all the same thing and it’s available to each and every one of us 24/7. But in our numbed out, overwhelmed, super stressed lives, we can’t see the forest for the trees. We wouldn’t recognize our guidance if it jumped up and bit us in the rear. In fact, that’s almost what it took for me to recognize and follow my own inner compass. Instead, I started seeing numbers. Well, the number 11 to be exact and 11:11 or 1:11 or 4:11, 6:11 etc. to be even more exact. Every time I happened to glance at a clock, or notice a license plate zoom by me, it was always the same...that

CYNERGY THOUGHTS

Raise a Little HellBy Cindy Drummond

Over Christmas and New Years, I heard a lot of talk from people about how 2014 is going to better.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2014 is the Year of the Horse. In Chinese culture, the Horse is a symbol of nobility, class, speed and perseverance. People born in the Year of the Horse are smart, fabulous speakers who have a gift for getting through to other people. They believe that their aim in life is to ask for individual liberty and happiness. Well I too, think 2014 is going to be a good year. Partially because I was born in 1966, a horse year, but also because I believe that despite what year you are born, or what your sign is... you have the power to change your life.

If you don’t like your world then what are you going to do to change it?

To quote the band Trooper:

Many people start a new year with resolutions and within a few weeks or months, resign themselves to failure. Here’s an idea that just might make you stick to your resolutions this year.

Book a meeting with a friend, or several friends and ask them to come prepared to think about what they want to achieve. There are 3 steps to setting goals.

1) Think of your goal

2) Write it down

3) Tell someone about it

A word of caution... be careful who you trust with your goals. Not everyone wants to see you succeed. Tell someone who you know has your best interest at heart.

Each person should have a maximum of 6 goals. Common areas to set goals include: Health and Wellness, Finance, Family, Relationships, Career and Personal.

You should be able to accomplish your goal within a 1 year time frame and your goal must be measurable. You shouldn’t say “I want to work out more”. because that isn’t measurable.

Your goal could be: To start and contribute to an RESP for my children ($100/month) by January 31 or, I would like to play 30 rounds of tennis in 2010. Both of these are measurable.

Once you have written down and discussed your goals it is important that you place them somewhere you will see them often.

If you don’t like What you got Why don’t you change it If your world is all screwed up Rearrange it

If you don’t like what you see Why don’t you fight it If you know there’s something wrong Why don’t you right it

In the end it comes down to your thinking And there’s really nobody to blame When it feels like your ship is sinking And you’re too tired to play the game

Nobody’s going to help you You’ve just got to stand up alone And dig in your heels And see how it feels to Raise a little Hell of your own!

number 11. I thought I was starting to lose my mind! I even asked my hubby if he was noticing this too and he looked at me like I had three heads!

And here’s where the story gets even stranger. While this was happening to ME, thousands of miles across the country it was also happening to my MOM! One day, while speaking with her on the phone, she said she had to figure out why she was seeing 11s all the time. Well you can imagine that the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I eagerly shared my story too!

Long story short, it was the magic number 11 that got my attention and started me on the road to discovering myself, my TRUE self. Yet, more importantly, it taught me how to tune into my inner guidance and find my true path and purpose. Today, I use my inner compass all the time and I have finally fulfilled my burning desire to be of service to others. As an Angel Therapy Practitioner® I get to help other women who are wearing the shoes I once wore. Nothing brings me more happiness than when I teach women who feel disconnected from their path and purpose in life how to recognize, and rely on, their inner guidance so they can move forward again with clarity, confidence and enthusiasm.

Next to having my kids, finding my true self was the hardest thing I have “birthed” but I wouldn’t have changed my journey for anything in the world. Thank you inner compass, thank you.

Top 5 Garden Trends for 2014By Joanne Dafoe

A brand new year full of hope and possibilities. More than ever, we are spending time outdoors, making the most of our time with nature. Our interior elements are now blending and spilling over into our exterior spaces. Conversation areas, outdoor accents and fresh produce at our fingertips are just a few of the exterior trends for 2014. The new age gardener is looking for a visually exciting outdoor space and one that has function.

Take a look at the top trends for your garden in 2014:

Easy Care, Easy ComfortDecorate your yard with the same vigor as you design a room indoors. A comfortable conversation area is essential, complete with a big comfy couch and outdoor appropriate art and accessories. Look for funky outdoor fabrics, concrete coffee tables and weatherproof metal accents to be hot items this season. A well-designed outdoor room can be as inviting as your favorite chair in the living room.

Miniature GardeningA clear globe shaped vase, or a shallow glass bowl can be the stage for a miniature garden. This trend goes beyond gnomes and fairies! Whatever your interest, you can create a miniaturegarden scene that can be used indoors or on the outdoor coffee table. Incorporate mini landscape elements like pebbles, moss or small branches to create a mini forest scene. Get the kids and grandkids interested and add miniature benches, bridges and cottages to complete the scene. It is proving to be an addictive collection, crossing multi generational lines

Farm to TableRaised garden beds and container herb gardening continue at the forefront of trends for 2014. What’s new for this year, is the emerging demographic that is reveling in this resurgence. Men, aged 18-34 are harvesting their own vegetables and snipping their own herbs to

throw onto the grill. Grilling gamey meat is also en vogue. Mmmm... fresh parsley with a little minced garlic is the perfect elk meat accompaniment!

Perfect PotsWhether containers are shown off at the front entrance, or tucked into a shrub bed, bold, colorful pots with impact are trending this year. Containers allow you to express the designer in all of us - packed full of annuals with a mix of bold perennial foliage looks fabulous. As an alternative, try one large Hydrangea for easy elegance and season long blooms

Drink Your GardenRemember the Arbor Day Tree you received in Elementary School? It’s the one that was planted way too close to the house and has now overtaken the entire yard, leaving little room foranything else! We are still encouraged to plant trees and shrubs, but now we are looking for decorative and functional trees. Super berries that can go into smoothies are trending this year. Think sour cherries, raspberries, Haskap berries, Goji berries, and strawberries, picked fresh from your yard. Add a frozen banana and some Almond Milk and you have a fabulous smoothie high in anti-oxidants and Vitamin C. Cheers!

Design balance in your exterior space by creating it to be decorative and functional, and at the same time, a hub for social activity. Build the oasis that will beckon you outside. It’s not about how much you spend, but how well it was enjoyed.
