An Update from the Transition Team/Call Committee
The call team is excited to have received names of candidates for Trinity’s call for a
pastor.
We have established interviews for three candidates. The first set of interviews will
be via Skype to help define what the candidates stated in their Rostered Leader Profile.
Following these interviews we will set up mutual face to face interviews to present the
many questions that have been developed from all your input as a congregation over the
past year. These questions are about their ministry and the mission and ministry of this
congregation. After that process a decision may be made by the call team to recommend
one candidate to the Church Council. The Church Council will then inform you of its
decision and call a special congrega-
tional meeting. There will be an oppor-
tunity to meet the recommended
candidate. You will be able to vote for
the chosen candidate and the financial
considerations. The chosen candidate
will hopefully accept the call if and
when the Council approves the recom-
mendation.
We are excited at meeting these
candidates and hope that something
wonderful will begin.

Worship in Pink Weekend at Trinity!! Our annual celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness will be the
weekend of October 8th and 9th. The Health Ministry Committee will host a luncheon on Saturday,
October 8th at 11:30. We will have special activities and the recogni-tion of breast cancer survivors. Our guest speaker is Dr. Jennifer Gar-reau, a surgical oncologist specializing in breast and skin cancer with Legacy Medical Group-Surgical Oncology in Portland. The topic is “The Environment and Breast Cancer”.
This is a free event and open to all members of the congregation and community. Invite your daughters, mothers, sisters, sons, spouses, friends and neighbors. Reservations are necessary so we can be pre-pared. Sign up on the Health Ministries board, leave a care gram, or call the church office.
At our worship services on October 8th and 9th, we would again like to recognize all who are survivors of breast cancer. This is a won-derful opportunity to embrace those who have been through this, both women and men, and encourage the importance of early detection.
The “Tree of Life” will be posted on the sanctuary wall with leaves to add the names of people you wish to remember who have passed away from any form of cancer. Put this special weekend on your calendars, and stay tuned for more information. Save the Date: The annual Celebration of Health 2016 “Together in Healing” is scheduled for Sunday, November 6th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Red Lion Hotel on the River in Portland. This is sponsored by our local Faith Community Nursing/Health Ministries Northwest organization. There is a Reception, Silent auction, and Heavy Refreshments/Lunch, and a program. The featured speaker is Donna Oiland, storyteller and motivational speaker and founder of Radiant Joy Ministries. The cost is $60.00 per person and is tax deductible. If you are interested in joining me at this event, please let me know. The invitation is posted on the Health Ministries board. Linde Eidenberg, RN Parish Nurse

Church Campout Wrap-Up: Paradise Found..........or Heaven on Earth
Thirteen people from Trinity, five pets, and surrounded by nature! What could be better?!!
The annual church camp-out at Ft. Stevens State Park, near Astoria, gave us our choice of tents, yurts,
cabins, or RVs. We found fresh huckleberries right at our camp sites...bring on the pancakes! The sun-
shine, campfires, delicious potluck (but, alas, no jello salad!), long walks and bike rides, and warm conver-
sations truly was the Holy Spirit present in our lives. Be attentive to the 2017 announcement about our
next annual camp-out; it will be here before you know it.
October Is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month: What to Know
October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual campaign that aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the disease.
A closer look at the staggering stats about breast cancer reveal why this is an important cause to so many people.
According to the American Cancer Society, every 2 minutes a woman in the United States is diag-nosed with breast cancer -- that’s everything from “stage zero” cancer (which some doctors believe shouldn’t even be called cancer) to the deadliest form: invasive breast cancer.
The cancer organization also estimates that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be di-agnosed in women in the United States this year. And an estimated 2,350 new cases will be diag-nosed in men.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a part of the World Health Organization, estimat-ed that in 2012, around 1.7 million new cases of breast cancer in women occurred worldwide.
These numbers have influenced the need for early detection and screenings. According to the Food and Drug Administration, more than 39 million mammograms are performed each year in the United States.
And those mammograms may have had an impact. The American Cancer Society reports that the breast cancer death rate is down 34% since 1990. As of Jan. 1, 2014, there were more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.
The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that there are more than 6 million breast cancer survivors worldwide, giving many survivors a reason to celebrate this month.

Many people have wondered when Lutherans
started playing co-ed softball. History shows it began
some 500 years ago when Martin Luther and a team
of monks and former nuns took on some Catholic
Cardinals and nuns coached by Johann Tetzel in a
“friendly” game of co-ed softball. Unfortunately, the
game got out of hand a bit and there were arguments
ranging from what the “halo” rule was (hit ball up the
middle at the pitcher) to whether you were saved by
Grace or Indulgences. The game was never complet-
ed as both sides left the field angry. Martin was so
upset he sat down and wrote the 95 rules of co-ed
softball as well as 95 Thesis concerning his views on
indulgences and other items of theology. Unfortu-
nately the wind took Martin’s 95 rules of co-ed soft-
ball rules off of the door and left his 95 Thesis, so
Martin was never actually credited with the rules. Be-
cause of that game, Lutherans and Catholics have
never played co-ed softball again, or taken commun-
ion together.
Trinity softball doesn’t quite go back 500 years,
but it can be traced to starting sometime in the 80’s
(1980, not 1580s). Over the years a team has played
representing Trinity in Sunday afternoon co-ed slow
pitch softball. Many of those team photos were in the
display case this past summer. Some seasons have
been successful by their record and others by the
team’s ability for fellowship. The team over the past
few years has been leaning a bit on the “fellowship”
side. This year we finished a respectable 6-8.
As I have pointed out on several occasions the
one thing that this team has that very few other
groups at Trinity has is the diversity in ages of those
participating. Our most “senior” player is over 65.
Our youngest is 14. And we actually have families
that play together. Yes that is right, children actually
playing a game in public with their parents. Our fel-
lowship attitude with each other is a reason that over
the last few years we have won three times the Fel-
lowship Award by a vote from the other teams. I
think fellowship is not only how we act with our op-
ponents, but also just importantly how we act within
our own team. We enjoy playing and being around
each other and I think that shows. (OK, we didn’t
win it this year, but doesn’t mean we weren’t good at
our fellowship!)
This year we had 23 players who played for Trini-
ty (25 on our roster). Not all our members of Trinity,
but all wore the Trinity jersey. At times we were just
getting enough players, but we constantly put out a
“Trinity” team every week. As coach I can’t thank the
team enough for always supporting me. This year we
continued to try and get everyone to play more than
one position and most everyone did. We even had
three players who made the “10 position club” (all 10
defensive positions). I think it made the season more
interesting and fun and I hope everyone enjoyed it.
So here is your 2016 Trinity softball team: Jim Bechtel, Nolan Bechtel, Lilia Bechtel, Doug
Bernabo, Kristie Bernabo, Tony Bernabo, Zac
Bernabo, CW Bullock, Tandi Johnson, Leesa
Klepper, Larry Kramer, Mike Palmer, Melanie
Palmer, Kevin Palmer, Jim Peters, Dave Ruppert,
Kenneth Salvitelli, Samantha Salvitelli, Kim
Salvitelli, Cameron Salvitelli, Brooklyn Svela, Holly
Udd, Dorian Willmschen, Chris Willmschen, Cason

Score Keepers Extraordinaire:
Lisa Alibabaie, Eva Kramer, Kristie Bernabo
Also to our fans that came and rooted us on (you
know who you are… I hope you do…) a great big
THANK-YOU! We did have some exciting games
this year and maybe more of you can come out to
watch YOUR team next season. Plan on buying your
season tickets early for next year! Watch for sales
information next spring.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank
a few people. I want to thank my assistant-coach/stats
guy/sounding-board/e-mail guy Ken Salvitelli for
helping me out once again this year. And I once
again want to thank my wife Kristie for well, let’s
face it; anyone married to me deserves to be thanked
(and for being dragged out of “retirement” yet again
to play some games.)
See you all next year! Just listen for the sound of
“Play Ball!”
