I’m writing this as I prepare to visit
Berkeley, CA, where I graduated
from seminary and was ordained as
a pastor the following week in May,
2002. That was 15 years ago. I look
forward to revisiting this formative
part of the profound and interesting
journey that is pastoral ministry,
even as I continue to be delighted
and surprised by how it is
unfolding. I’m deeply grateful for Trinity, the
best call I’ve ever had.
One of the ways that I am marking this point in
my journey is by going on sabbatical this summer.
As you know, Trinity has received a grant from
the Eli Lilly Foundation to fund this sabbatical,
which will focus on the intersections of faith and
art. David and I are headed to Europe in June to
follow in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh, one
of our favorite artists. In July, I will be doing
some artwork here in WI, and in August, my
youngest niece and I are taking watercolor
painting classes at the Grunewald Guild, an
art/faith community in Washington State.
While I am away, Trinity will have its own
journey, as together and separately we
contemplate new ways of reaching our neighbors
with the Good News that God is with us and for
us, always. Under the guidance of our capable
church council, sabbatical committee, and other
volunteers, I have no doubt you will carry on
being church in my absence. Retired pastor Ron
Mach will cover preaching and presiding on
Sunday mornings while I’m away, and our own
pastors JoAnn Fabie, John Ruppenthall, and Jim
Schwarz will help out with pastoral care.
The art/faith aspect of this sabbatical isn’t just for
my growth and enjoyment. It is a path we’ll all be
\\
taking. On Sunday, May 28, Rev. Paul Oman, a
Lutheran pastor and professional artist, will
initiate this communal venture. He will paint an
image of Emmaus story (see Luke 24) during
worship. Not only is it a fascinating process, but
in addition, the congregation will keep this
painting. Bring your friends!
June 4th is Pentecost Sunday, when we
celebrate the Holy Spirit descending on the
church, enabling the Gospel to be communicated
to all people in their own languages. In addition to
having our Global Worship that day, we’ll be
having an international potluck afterward to
wish David and me a bon voyage. Bring a dish of
your choice!
As you all go on your own vacations and journeys
this summer, I invite you to pick up and bring
back little mementos from your travels. Pebbles,
leaves, tiles, or other small items we all collect
will be incorporated in some way into the art
project we will be completing together in the fall.
Part of the sabbatical grant is earmarked to create
a mural on the exterior wall that faces our main
parking lot (what this mural will depict is
something we will be discerning together). There
is no doubt that when we reunite at the end of the
summer, we will have stories and new insights to
share, and we will be doing that both formally and
informally.
In the meantime, let us keep our eyes open to see
how God is at work in, with, around, and through
us. Fifteen years as a pastor have taught me that
no matter what else is happening, Jesus is made
known to us in the breaking of the bread. Jesus is
with us and for us. And we have the privilege and
obligation to share that news with all of creation.

EVENTS & INFORMATION
Fundraising for the new church sign
At the annual meeting in January, the Congregation voted to replace the wooden
sign at the corner of First and Winnebago Streets. The new sign will light from
the inside, and also have an electronic display that will tell passers-by what
is going on at Trinity. On Easter Sunday, a display was erected in the Narthex
describing the new sign and providing pledge envelopes for your
donations. The total cost will be about $23,000. Our fundraising effort was
launched with a generous gift from the estate of Mel Schluter, and now we ask
all congregation members to join this effort. Once we give Ryan Signs the go-ahead, they will need about 2
months to build our sign in their shop. We hope to have the new sign installed later this Fall.
Mike Byrne - Stewardship Commission
Multiculturalism Presentation
Following worship on Sunday, May 7, Donna Peckett (who led last summer's arts camp for TAPIT in our
basement) will be bringing one of her students from Edgewood College. Estiven Mulian is a young man of
Chinese heritage and an immigrant from Colombia. He will share with us his questions of identity and
belonging and encourage us to think about our own sense of personhood based on the places we call home and
our ethnic histories.
Sunday, May 14 - Guest Speaker from Lutherans United
Assisting After Disasters
All are invited to gather in the Fellowship Hall following worship on Sunday, May 14, for a half-hour
presentation from a special guest representing LUAD (Lutherans United Assisting After Disasters).
LUAD is a mission of the South Central Wisconsin Synod of Wisconsin. It began at Bethel Lutheran Church
after the 2008 floods. Initially 6 congregations joined together to form the new disaster recovery group. LUAD
is based on several principles the most important are these: a focus on the spiritual nature of helping others,
control by the local congregations, a survivor-centered focus, and a commitment to remaining totally
volunteer. No member of LUAD receives payment for being a part of LUAD and no survivor is ever charged
for any services. LUAD does not duplicate any work usually done by existing disaster organization; it is
designed to fill in where no services are provided. Please join us to learn more about this very valuable
organization.
NEWS FROM LAY MINISTRY ….
MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER AND PARTICIPATE!
July is going to be crazy busy here at Trinity, so clear your July calendars!
First, we have The Road Home guests moving in on Sunday, July 9th.
We will be looking for people to assist that week, especially with Pastor Sue’s
shift, so we hope you will spend a few hours with our families.
As The Road Home leaves on the 16th, Bike and Build will be pedaling in. They will be staying
with us from Sunday the 16th to Wednesday the 19th. We usually have a lasagna dinner
hosted by the congregation their first night here, and they give a fun presentation of the Bike
and Build program after the meal, so keep the whole day of the 16th open for The Road Home
move out and the Bike and Build dinner!

Then we get a breather for a week, and it is time for
ATWOODFEST, July 29th and 30th. They have already
contacted us asking for our fun games and volunteers, so it will be
time to get that Trinity Fishing Hole ready for action, and set up
the little duffers for their marshmallow hole-in-ones! This has
been a great fundraiser for the Wilmar Community Center, and it is
fun to go out and play at the neighborhood party, so keep those
dates open!
More immediately for your calendar!
Pastor Sue is giving instruction in Healing Training. Offer hope and comfort to your
brothers and sisters in Christ by sharing the power of God’s healing touch. Pastor Sue
will be offering healing training to Homebound Visitors and everyone else interested in
this vital mission on May 7th, before the service in the sanctuary. This ministry will
be especially important during Pastor Sue’s sabbatical.
And you will notice a new item in the bulletin, called Pocket Change. It will be a monthly
reminder of areas for special offerings, so if you have a bunch of pennies jangling in the
bottom of your purse, or a forgotten dollar rediscovered in your pocket, you could donate it
to that cause during the offering. Subjects might include our missionary, Carolyn Schneider;
local, national, or world needs; our fellowship budget; the PaMoja Project at East High
School, and other items brought to our attention.
Speaking of PaMoja, if you would like to support this wonderful experience for East High students this
summer, you can put a special offering in the plate when the ushers come by!
SERVE ON TRINITY’S LAY MINISTRY TEAM!

call me at 608-249-0189, or email me at [email protected]. Thank you!
Pill Bottle Donations
Matthew 25: Ministries accepts donations of empty plastic pill bottles for inclusion in shipments of medical
supplies and for shredding and recycling. Our pill bottle program fulfills the dual needs of improving medical
care in developing countries and caring for our environment.
Acceptable collection items include:
Prescription and over-the-counter pill bottles
Large and small pill bottles
Pill Bottles with and without secure caps (child resistant)
Pill bottles that are not appropriate to include with shipments of medical supplies are recycled for
cash that goes towards Matthew 25: Ministries’ programs. If you wish to prepare bottles for shipment rather
than recycling, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Bottles included in shipments of medical supplies must have an all plastic lid.
Sort bottles by color and type.
Remove labels, leaving no glue or residue.
Wash bottles in very hot water and dish soap.
Rinse and dry thoroughly.
Replace lids on clean, dried bottles.
Place clean, recapped bottles in large ziplock bags marked “Clean Bottles.” These will be blended with
medical supplies. Please leave your pill bottles in the collection box in the Narthex.

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
Update on the Arlyn Fuerst Memorial Anthem Project
We recently received the completed manuscript of our memorial anthem from composer
John Helgen. He has done a masterful job on the piece, and we are excited to begin learning it.
Be watching the bulletin and newsletter for the date when we will sing the anthem for the first
time!
Join Us for Summer Choir!
Do you enjoy singing in choirs but maybe haven't sung since you were in school?
Or maybe you're one of those who loves to belt out your favorite tunes on the
radio (or whatever it is that kids listen to music on these days.) Well, know that
there is safety in numbers, and we are here for you! Don't be shy! Come and join
us in singing for the Sunday services in June and July. There are no auditions,
robes to wear, or lengthy rehearsals; we only meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30 to learn
that day's music. Just show up when you are available and have fun with us as we sing
God's praises.
Handbell Concerts Road Crew
Do you enjoy handbell music? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a roadie? Do you like free
food? If so, we have just the volunteer opportunity for you!
On Tuesday, May 9th, the Harmony Bell group will "take their show on the road" to
perform two concerts in Stoughton: one at 10:00, the other at 2:00. Some of our usual helpers
are unavailable that day and we are in need of assistance in loading and unloading our gear. If
you could even just be at Trinity to help us load our vehicles (ca. 8:15) or unload (ca. 3:30),
that would be great. However, if you spend the day with us, we will buy you lunch AND you
will get to hear two great handbell concerts! :-) Talk to Wendy, Wayne Martin, or Jo and
Gordy Erickson if you are able to help. Thanks!
Sort & File Music
If you prefer a more sedentary (yet equally important) volunteer task, consider joining us for
the end-of-the choir-season-music-filing session! Throughout the past year, stacks of choir
anthems have grown into an Alp-like mountain chain, and there is fear that a paper avalanche
will soon sweep through the Music Room if order is not restored.
Contact Wendy Ward or Shirley Olson know if you would like to help sort and file music.
Once we have some volunteers, we will choose a date that works for everyone. Did I
mention that there will be free food?

On Sunday, April 23, the Sunday school kids sang 'If I Were a Butterfly'. Many thanks Aaron Jossart for
playing the piano, Ericka Short and Karen Hein and the many friends in the congregation for added vocals, and
to the kids for demonstrating the actions of each animal mentioned in the song!
