TERM 2
WEEK 7
25th MAY
2016
Dear Parents,
Our school Feast Day last week provided us with a great opportunity to celebrate
Trinity. Both the School Mass on Friday and the Parish Mass on Sunday emphasised
that first and foremost we are a Catholic School.
Without the vision of Fr. John Allen, Bishop Coffey, The Catholic Education Office and
key members of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish back in the late 1990’s Trinity
would not have opened in the year 2000 at all. We cannot forget our history and the
sacrifices that were made back then which have created what we have today.
Prospective parents viewing the school today have the opportunity to tour the
grounds, be guided by current students who talk about their experiences at the
school, meet with the staff and can view Trinity in operation. Parents in 1999 would
not have had these opportunities when they selected Trinity for the education of their
children. What an amazing leap of faith they took?? At the time there was no
operating school to observe, no existing parents to talk to about the school and no
facilities, in fact the projected site was just a paddock. These parents wanted a
Catholic Education for their children and placed their trust in God and the Catholic
Diocese of Sale to deliver them a school.
To be a staff member in a brand new school is also a difficult task, many sacrifices
and adjustments have to be made to accommodate the underdeveloped site and rapid
growth. Under the guidance of Mary Howlett (Foundation Principal) the staff worked
hard to establish Trinity. Romalie Sooriyabandara and Evie De Marchi are the only
staff still here at Trinity who were a part of the very first day. They took some time
this week to reflect upon their memories of what it was like in those early days and
the connection they feel through to the school now. Below is their reflection;
‘Eleven teachers and staff committed to Catholic Education together with the parent’s
faith and hope for their children created a learning environment for the most precious
gift of them all, the children. With an abundance of love we commenced Trinity
Catholic Primary School on a rainy, windy morning on the 25th of January 2000.
The school consisted of a block of 6 portables, five used as classrooms, grades Prep to
year 4 and the 6th portable as an Administration Block, housing the Principals Office,
Library, Staffroom, Sickbay, Uniform Shop and the Admin Office. With the bare
essentials teaching began. There was very limited resources such as books and
furniture. The only electronic device that arrived on time was the photocopy machine.
The school grounds did not consist of adventure play equipment, an oval or a soccer
field. Each morning the children were greeted by a field full of yellow daisies, which
they used to create daisy chains for themselves and staff. Gum boots were part of the
uniform, this enabled the children to play outdoors.
Parents, grandparents and parishioners helped with the moving of furniture, the
gardens, within the classrooms, the Uniform Shop and in every possible way that they
were able to offer a helping hand. There was a real spirit of teamwork and the
beginning of the Trinity Community.
Has the School changed from them to now? Yes and No.
At present we have 52 teachers and staff committed to Catholic Education together
with the parents’ faith and hope for their children in creating a learning environment
for the most precious gift of all, the children (498), accompanied with an abundance
of love .

The school has grown to 21 classrooms, you just have to look around and you are able to see at a glance
what the school is able to provide for your child. Today you can also visit the school website, pick up an
information booklet, read a classroom blog or receive the newsletter on paper as well as electronically.
We still have an army of volunteers which include parents, grandparents and parishioners who provide
support and lend a helping hand.
On Monday 23rd of May 2016, we phoned the families whose enrolments have been accepted for the 2017
school year. The enthusiasm and excitement of the parent’s voices was the same as when we conversed
with the families in 1999.
The future is a very exciting time at Trinity with renovations across the school and new learning spaces for
the students. The core values remain the same then and now – to create the best learning environment
for your Childs future
Every day is a wonderful and marvellous day at Trinity!’ - Romalie & Evie.
At our Parish Mass on Sunday Fr. Brendan’s Homily focussed on the importance of community, in
particular being welcoming and the sense of belonging that accompanies being involved. A great example
of this was last Friday afternoon where we had many parents assisting with the sausage sizzle lunch and
then the enthusiasm of the students in the afternoon with so many families participating in our activities.
The old saying, ‘you get out what you put in,’ is never more evident than in a school setting. I encourage
you to become involved with Trinity and enjoy what being an active member of the community brings. Fr
Brendan also spoke about the value of getting to know people, reaching out and talking to people that you
are not as familiar with. In a big school community such as ours (350+ families) there are many people
to get to know and become friendly with. You may just not have met them yet! Fr Brendan has
challenged us to take on that responsibility of reaching out and speaking to those that we are not familiar
with to continue to build our community.
In the wake of our Feast Day celebrations it is a great opportunity to reflect upon the wonderful school we
have here at Trinity. We are blessed to be the beneficiaries of all the sacrifice and hard work that has
been done by those before us to provide what we have today. Our challenge as the current custodians is
to leave it as an even better place for those who will follow after us.
A special thanks to Kathryn Pepper, Fr. Brendan and the Parents and Friends Committee for the huge
effort they put in to the organisation and facilitation of our celebrations.
Year 4 Camp
Next Thursday and Friday the Year 4 students will head to Sovereign Hill for their overnight camp.
Georgegina Nettleingham is the teacher in charge of the camp and Ellie Gubbins, Sarah Hubbard, Liz
Jones, Jaimilee Marsden, Maria Scarton, Ange Schinck and Rebecca Todisco are the other staff that are
attending. I thank the staff as it is a big effort to leave their own families for the duration of the camp. The
students will have a wonderful time enjoying the opportunity to explore what life was like for the early
settlers in Ballarat.
Carpark
I ask that families please respect the carpark rules when dropping off and collecting your children. We are
very lucky at Trinity to have this area to utilise and we need to keep the safety of our children as the
number one priority. If you are unpredictable in your driving then you are unpredictable to pedestrians,
especially children. We expect that;
All cars please observe the carpark rules and travel at a very slow pace.
Children are dropped off and collected from the dedicated bays.
Cars do not drive forward over the zebra crossing in between other cars and put
pedestrian safety at risk.
Pedestrian’s please use the zebra crossing.
At school the children are now instructed to wait for their parents sitting under the
sheltered area. We ask that this is reinforced at home as well.
Toddlers are accompanied by their parents at all times.
Courtesy is paid to all who use the space.
I will be attending the Australian Primary Principals Association Conference next week with the other
Primary Principals from the Sale Diocese. Liz Jones will be the Acting Principal in my absence and Kathryn
Pepper the Acting Deputy Principal.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Trinity Feast Day Celebrations
Last Friday we celebrated our school feast day. Many families gathered with our students and staff to
celebrate Mass, based on our school motto of faith, hope and love. Thank you to Mrs Zammit for sharing her
talents and expertise with the middle and senior dance students and to those who carried out the different
ministries in the mass. The students then returned to school for a shared lunch and participated in
celebratory activities in the classroom. A big thank you to all the wonderful parents, grandparents
and friends that generously gave up their time to cook the sausages and organise the distribution
of icy poles. Without their continued support days like this would not be possible.
On Sunday there was a great representation of Trinity families at our 9.15 Parish Mass. We thank all
students, staff and families who attended and shared their talents with everyone.
We thank God for the partnership we have between school, family and parish and for the gift of our faith.

WET WEATHER = SPARE UNIFORM!!! As the school grounds are very muddy after all the rain we have had, a lot of children are coming in after
falling over covered in mud. Could you please pack a spare uniform (especially for the middle and
senior grades) as we do not have the larger sizes in sick bay, otherwise we will have to give you a call for
some dry clothes to be dropped in to the school.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
REALITY THERAPY - Part 2
‘The Essence of reality therapy is that we are all responsible for what we choose to do. We may
be the product of our past, but we are not victims of the past unless we choose to be’
(Corey, 2001:229).
Last week we started to explore the “WDEP” system, a procedure commonly used in Reality Therapy that leads to change. The Reality Therapy approach to counselling and problem-solving focuses on the here-and-now of the person and how to create a better future, instead of
concentrating at length on the past. It emphasises making decisions, and taking action and control of one's own life.
W Wants The first stage in the process explores a person’s wants, needs and perceptions and the following
questions are often asked of the person involved. This provides the counsellor / teacher with an insight into the behaviour being presented.
What is it that you want? What are you doing now to get what you want? How much effort are you devoting to get what you want?
How do you perceive yourself and significant others in your life?
Are you meeting your basic needs? D Doing
The second stage focuses on what the person is doing (behaviour) and the direction this is taking them. It is an opportunity for the person to step back
and reflect on what is going on around them. The following questions are often asked as a way of discovering this. What are you doing?
What are you thinking to yourself? What are you asking yourself?
What are you currently doing and to what degree is it working? Is your present behaviour helping you to get what you want or hurting you and others around you?
E Evaluation
Challenging people to make an evaluation of their behaviour is the next important step in bringing about change. During this stage, people are asked to think about whether their present behaviour has a reasonable chance of getting them what they want now, and will it take them in the
direction they want to go? From this point the counsellor/ teacher encourages them to consider which actions and thoughts they would like to change because they are not working. Assumptions
are also considered and discussed.
P Plan The final stage involves making a “plan” that will bring about better choices. The counsellor/ teacher helps the person to create a workable plan in order to get what they want. The plan needs
to be small enough and feel safe in order for it to be achieved. A commitment to carry out the plan must be made, as they are the only ones in control of their behaviour. Possible questions
asked to assist this process are: Are you ready to make plans to more effectively meet your needs? What would help you follow through with your plan and make a commitment to change?
By working through this process, people seek to discover what they really want and whether what
they are currently doing (how they are choosing to behave) is actually bringing them nearer to, or further away from, that goal.

STICKYBEAK LUNCH BAGS
A new stock of the reusable lunch bags have arrived and are available in different colours from the school Office for $10 each.
For those families who are already using the Stickybeak Lunch Bags could I please ask that they are cleaned out after each lunch order day. We quite often find leftover food
and empty sauce containers still in the bag. They are also washable so please, if you notice that they are getting “grotty”, could you please give them a wash. For health
reasons we may not be able to use them if they are too dirty.
Your help in this would be very much appreciated.

PARISH PRIEST’S CORNER
This weekend we celebrate our Parish Feast Day. There has been a great response from many who have
offered to make the day a great celebration. As we look back over our 35 years as a parish we have a
deep sense of gratitude, we are a community because so many have come to pray and serve.
This Sunday we also celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. On Friday we celebrated mass with Trinity
Primary school for their school feast day. This Sunday they will be celebrating the 9.15am mass with our
parish. One of the great blessings in our parish is our three primary schools, Trinity, Don Bosco and Mary
Mackillop each with their unique way of expressing God’s love in our community. For many the school is the
first point of contact with our parish community. It is wonderful that our schools are such welcoming places.
Trying to explain the mystery of the Trinity is challenging however our children deeply understand that God
is love.
As older pilgrims on the journey of faith how would we explain the mystery of the Trinity to a non-believer
to help them come to faith? Theologians tells us that the overflow of love between the Father and Son is
the Holy Spirit which is poured into our hearts. Listening to and responding to the call of the Holy Spirit
takes careful discernment, prayer and generosity. Jesus will always call us to serve and not be served. As
we celebrate the Feast of Holy Trinity may we come to a deeper awareness of God’s love in our life? A love
that will not leave us orphaned. St Augustine said it well when he discovered that his life without God was
leaving him unfulfilled. “My heart is restless God until it rests in you.” I wish you all a wonderful Feast Day
and many blessings for the years to come. Fr Brendan

PASTORAL CARE NEWSLETTER 25th MAY 2016
WE PRAY FOR: Those parents undergoing treatment for Cancer; those awaiting the results of tests; those who are expecting babies; for the needs of all our Families and for the
builders working on the renovations to our school.
SCHOOL COOK BOOKS: ”A TASTE OF TRINITY” are available for $5.00 from the
Office or from Sister Joy – a great birthday present!
SECOND HAND SCHOOL UNIFORMS: There are still a number of good quality winter uniform
pieces available for sale.
LOST PROPERTY BOX: This is situated just outside the door into the Hall in the Readman building. Could I ask you all to please name your child’s/children’s jumpers and jackets as this makes it much easier to return them if they are lost.
Parents please take the time to look and make sure that the jumper/jacket that your child is wearing belongs to them as there are a number
of parents whose children have mislaid theirs and often the younger
children can be wearing someone else’s clothing until it goes into the wash. Thank you.
World Environment Day: Sunday June 5, 2016 Theme: Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet.
Consume with Care. The well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the
planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.
Water: Even though households are relatively low consumers of water, population growth and expanded water use have outweighed the effect of water saving technology and behaviour.
frozen in the Antarctica, Arctic and glaciers. Humanity must therefore rely
on 0.5% for all of man’s ecosystem’s and fresh water needs.
Water is free from nature but the infrastructure needed to deliver it is expensive. HERBS AND PLANTS: are available for sale in the Office foyer and the
proceeds go towards the Carnival. As the soil is still warm, now is a good time to transplant these into the garden or into a larger pot. As the roses
and orchids bloom I will also bring these in for sale.
A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS: “The family comes alive as it reaches beyond itself; families who do so communicate their message of life and communion, giving comfort and hope to more
fragile families, and thus build up the Church herself which is the family of families.” (A Year with Pope Francis on the Family’ page 162.)
The above from Pope Francis could have been written about many of the Trinity Families who reach out to each other in times of sickness, upset in family life and many other
ways of which I am aware. GOOD ON YOU - PLEASE KEEP IT UP!
