To develop habits of mind, body, and spirit, rooted in the Catholic tradition, so as to attain the highest good.

Mission

Most Reverend Joseph P. McFaddenMay 22, 1947–May 2, 2013

Bishop Joseph P. McFadden was the 10th Bishop of Harrisburg. He was appointed on June 22, 2010, by then Pope Benedict XVI, and was installed as Bishop of Harrisburg on August 18, 2010, at the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick in Harrisburg. “Bishop McFadden was a strong advocate for Catholic education and enjoyed visiting all of the schools in the Diocese. He hosted several web and video conferences with our students over the past years at Trinity,” said Dr. Bouton, principal of Trinity. “Our students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and pray together.” “Bishop McFadden loved the students of Trinity. Whenever he had the opportunity to interact with them his face lit up. He enjoyed getting to know them and sharing the Faith with them,” added Scott Root, Director of Campus Ministry. The Trinity community was saddened by the Bishop’s passing. “We were blessed to have him in our lives and are fortunate to have many wonderful memories,” added Root.

WELCOMEDear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Trinity: This is to thank all who have supported us with financial and in-kind gifts over the past year. The annual fund is the bedrock of

all giving to our school. As you read through this report, you will see that a total of $791,902+ in restricted and unrestricted gifts was received – the highest figure in our 50 year history! We are especially grateful to all of our donors given the ongoing uncertain status of the economy here and around the world. Every decision of significance made at our school is intended to provide the best possible learning experience for our students within the limits of our resources. Over these pages you will see evidence, be it academically, through apostolic service, or a host of co-curricular and social activities, of how our remarkable students excel. It is not just the quality and quantity of their performances, but the class, dedication, and selflessness with which they achieve success. The main reason for the hard earned reputation that Trinity enjoys is our students and how they present themselves in myriad venues over the course of the year. But the attitudes and behaviors that our students demonstrate would not happen without the love and support that they receive at home or from our staff and faculty. The influence and value that you have in the lives of our students is beyond measure. Hence, this note is not only to thank our donors, but the adults inside our building and within your homes that are shaping these outstanding young adults who we serve. This annual report is only one reflection of the fact that we are a blessed community. As we celebrate Trinity’s 50th anniversary this coming year, please continue to support our school as we strive together for continued preeminence throughout central Pennsylvania over the next 50 years.

Sincerely,

Dr. David BoutonPrincipal/Head Learner

Students from Harrisburg Christian Elementary School were treated to a morning filled with games, arts and crafts, and Christmas goodies.

More than 100 Trinity students, dressed in jeans and jerseys (or activity t-shirts), representing more than 50 sports and activities, welcomed 7th and 8th grade students to our first ever ShamrockShowcase on March 24th. Students created their own “tour” by visiting the places they were most interested in. Prospective students got to meet Trinity students, some coaches, and some of our faculty. The day was capped off with “Be Calm – Rock On” t-shirts and Shamrock Shakes! A great day was had by all!

The Fifth Annual Lauren and Spencer Day Memorial Golf Tournament and Walk was held on June 15, 2013, at Mayapple Golf Links in Carlisle. New this year was a benefit concert held on Friday, June 14, with Michael McCormick ‘04 and his band City Dwelling Nature Seekers at the Elks Club. Both events raised money for the Lauren and Spencer Day Foundation. The Foundation was started by friends of the Day family to assist them while Lauren was battling leukemia. Lauren lost her battle in 2000, but the Foundation continued. When Lauren’s brother Spencer died in an automobile accident, his name was added to the Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to assist families in the community who are experiencing major medical crises. Trinity High School manages the fund.Thank you to the following individuals and businesses who generously donated to both events:

On a chilly April morning, Trinity alumni, parents, and friends came out for the first Trinity Rocks Run. More than one hundred participants ran the approximate three mile cross-country course around Trinity’s campus while current students cheered them on. Medals were awarded in several age categories, and prizes were handed out by the “running shamrock”.

Proceeds from the run benefitted Trinity’s Tuition Assistance Program.

Congratulations!SENIOR AWARDS

The senior awards ceremony each May always brings great pride to faculty and staff, parents, and alumni, as many students are recognized for their achievements over the past four years. This year was no different. In addition to awards and scholarships from the U.S. Army, local organizations, and friends of Trinity, this year saw an in-crease in alumni giving back, positively affecting the lives of our future leaders.

CHRISToPHeR d. MIoRIn leAdeR- SCHolAR AwARd2003 graduate Christopher Miorin established this award in 2010. Chris states, “My objective has been to identify and reward a student that exemplifies personal and professional characteristics that reflect what our country needs to promote moral, ethical, and competitive standards in the global landscape.” Chris is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Northwestern.

eyeS AwARd1986 graduate Jeanne Hein Thurber established the EYES (Encouraging Youth to Excel in Science) award in 2000. Since then, students are recognized each year for their outstanding science fair projects. “One of the most influential building blocks was my participation in the science fair [at Trinity],” Jeanne remarked. After receiving numerous awards and winning several championships, Jeanne felt the awards encouraged her to pursue a life in science and medicine. Dr. Thurber is an optometrist at Hook-sett Family Eyecare in Hooksett, New Hampshire, along with her husband Ed, an optician. The couple has two daughters.

RenAISSAnCe AwARdThis award was established in 2003 by friends of Trinity. One such friend, Tom Carocci ‘88, said “we want to recognize a se-nior who best exemplifies Michael’s Christian values and kindness and was active in Trinity extracurricular activities.”Donations for this annual scholarship may be sent to Trinity High School, Office of Advancement. Please note “Michael Paduano Scholarship”.

RyAn BoSTICk MeMoRIAl SCHolARSHIPRyan was a graduate of Trinity’s Class of 1986. When he died in 1997, his classmates, family, and friends established the scholarship to benefit a graduating senior who intends on studying engineering in college. This year’s award was presented to Jonathan Rice.

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Eco-nomic Development, provides tax credits to companies that donate to non-profit scholarship or educational improvement organizations. Business owners can designate their tax credits for Trinity High School through the Neumann Scholarship Foundation of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Bravo Educational Foundation, or Bridge Educational Foundation. Approved businesses are eligible to receive a 90% tax credit for a two year commitment, or a 75% tax credit for those who choose to participate for one year. “The EITC program is a tremendous asset to Trinity,” said Principal David Bouton. “This year has been a banner year. Through the generosity of our business friends, Trinity received almost $300,000 to benefit our families for the upcoming academic year.” For more information on how your business can participate and help the students and families of Trinity High School, please call Janet Quigley, Director of Advancement, at 717-761-2228 or e-mail [email protected]

Faith in Our Future Coinciding with our 50th Anniversary, Trinity has embarked on its first ever Capital campaign. The campaign is designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the facilities. The goal is to raise a total of $13 million, with three separate phases, over nine years. The campaign is expected to cover costs of upgrades to the school including window and insulation improvements, new HVAC and electrical systems, a new auditorium, restrooms facilities on COBO field, and miscellaneous interior renovations. While physical improvements are a priority of the fundraising effort, another component is to build an endowment for tuition assistance. “Being able to provide financial assistance to students in need so they can have the Trinity High School experience is an important component of who we are and what we do,” said Principal David Bouton. The “Faith in our Future” campaign has the support of the Diocese of Harrisburg and was strongly endorsed by Bishop Joseph McFadden before his unexpected passing. In speaking of the campaign, Bishop McFadden emphasized that the diocese recognizes the impact Trinity High School has had on students’ lives over its 50-year history. For more information or to donate to the “Faith in our Future” campaign, please visit Trinity’s website www.thsrocks.org and click on the campaign logo. For all that was, and all that will be, we Thank You.

Back in June of 2009, demolition began for the boys and girls locker rooms. A major part of the renovation was replacing the undersized lockers with single and double tier steel lockers suitable for storage of sports equipment. Fast forward to July of 2013 when demolition began to replace all (1,200+) lockers in the academic wing of the school – first and second floors. These lockers, original to the building, were undersized and showing their wear. Students found it difficult to fit their belongings in the 6” wide lockers. The student lockers replacement is the first project being completed in the scope of the Capital Campaign and will impact each and every student. The project consists of removing the old lockers and replacing them with 760 single tier 15” wide lockers with built-in combination locks. The board, administration, committee, staff, and students are grateful to the alumni, parents, and friends of Trinity High School for their generosity in response to our capital campaign. The lockers will be complete in time for the opening of our fiftieth year on Simpson Ferry Road.

Trinity broke ground in March on a 3,000 square foot fitness facility located at the school’s southeast corner next to the gymnasium. The facility will allow Trinity to expand its PE program and promote the health of the students and community. The fitness center will include a variety of weight machines, cardio machines, and miscellaneous equipment such as medicine balls, kettle bells, and jump ropes, and will be supervised at all times to ensure proper technique is being used. Instruction on how to use all the equipment safely and correctly will be taught by our physical education faculty. In addition to the Fitness Center, a 900 square foot training room was constructed on the northeast corner of the building for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to the student athletes, and an officials’ locker room. These facilities are possible through the generous gifts of donors. Brad Hollinger, President of Vibra Healthcare and The Hollinger Group, approached Trinity about a year ago. Brad is

a big proponent of every student experiencing physical activity daily. He offered Trinity the largest donation in the school’s 50-year history to construct the fitness center. Select Medical Corporation has fully funded the training room and locker room. Trinity is extremely grateful for their generosity and support. The creation of both the Fitness Center and training room will provide opportunities to expand healthy lifestyle programs and athletic training, and generate interest and enthusiasm for good physical and mental health among students and staff alike. The dedication and blessing of these additions will be held on Tuesday, September 3, at 9:00 a.m.

More than seventy-five students brought the story of forbidden love between persons from two different worlds to the Trinity community on February 7 -9 with their performance of Once on This Island. Originally inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, the Broadway show transports the story to a Caribbean island where social prejudice divides the island. Presented as a play within a play, a cast of village storytellers tell the romantic tale of a peasant girl who saves a rich city boy from death.

Christopher Giordano and Micaela Oliverio brought to life the two main characters, Daniel Beauxhomme and Ti Moune. Their performances, along with the other ac-tors, musicians, and danc-ers, were poignant and memorable. “The Trinity stage was actually transformed into an island in the Caribbean”, remarked Caroline Jarrett, the show’s co-director and

Trinity music teacher. Co-director Gary Bricker, parents, and students helped design the set and handled all the technological and lighting requirements.

“The universe is a wobbly thing. Everything is constantly expanding, spinning, flying,... Our choices show our charac-ter, which is more important than any grade, any paycheck, or any privilege. Though life may be uncertain, we have to take what we know about ourselves and become our perfect version, the summation of our unique talents, our vast potential, and our unyielding

difference. We will take what we have learned in our religion classes, at Masses, and on retreats and show our thanks by applying it in our everyday lives. We live in a rapidly changing world, but faith and a strong moral understanding will always be there to guide us.”

Andrew Turo ‘03LT A.J. “Stanza” Turo is serving with Squadron 86 in Lemoore California as a jet fighter naval aviator. Additionally he is the Squadron Legal Officer. Recently AJ was honored to have his name inscribed on an F 18 E Super Hor-net, a single seat fighter attack jet which is his office! Once deployed aboard an aircraft carrier, AJ and his comrades will fly these incredible machines on missions to protect America around the globe. As a “tail hook” aviator, AJ lands on the deck of the carrier and is “arrested” by cables that bring the plane from over 180 mph to full stop in only a few feet. Try that at night! Jennifer Studer ‘09Jennifer will be relocating to Los Angeles shortly as she recently accepted a position with the NFL Network. She will be working in the feature department alongside the lead feature producers. She previously worked for the NFL during the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis and the 2013 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Trinity High School has many traditions, some have occurred for decades, others relatively recent. One of these recent traditions is the honoring of our legacy families. What is a legacy? At Trinity, a legacy is a student whose parent or parents attended Trinity. “These families have made a Trinity education part of their family tradition,” said Alumni Relations Coordinator Lisa Wolfe. In fact, Lisa and her husband, Michael ‘85, are part of this tradition. Their three children, Mark ‘12, Blaine ‘13, and Mitch, a sophomore, all follow in their father’s footsteps and even share some of the same teachers. In 2008, the legacy program was introduced to Trinity. The first year, 107 students and their families were recognized and honored for their commitment to Trinity and for sharing their educational foundation. This past year, 13% of our students were legacies. “It is heartwarming that our alumni choose Trinity for their children. It speaks volumes about the education we provide,” Wolfe said.

In celebration of Trinity High School’s 50 years of excellence, we invite all of our legacies back for a Lenten prayer service followed by a breakfast in the cafeteria on April 16, 2014 at 8:20 a.m. We welcome you, and we thank you for keeping Trinity so special for all of us.

Excitement was in the air at Trinity on January 26 as more than 200 alumni, parents, and friends waited in anticipation of hearing or, depending on the order on the big green board, not hearing their ticket number called. The Trinity Alumni Association and Athletic Association co-sponsored the Big Green Giveaway and provided the crowd with a night of delicious food and great fun. Each $100.00 ticket received one entry in the cash drawing and included dinner and drinks for two. Tickets were drawn throughout the night, and one in every ten tickets won a prize. Typically, the last ticket drawn receives the grand prize of $3,000, with the preceding four receiving $800, $600, $400 and $200 respectively. However, some of the final five prefer to take a chance, as was the case with this year’s winners. Guests at the event enjoyed a delectable meal prepared by Black n’ Bleu, scrumptious desserts by Premier Catering, and the company of great friends. Emcee Gregg Cook ‘80, kept everyone on their toes with the calling of names of winners and, well, “disappointed guests”. As the night wore on, the few whose names were not called were feeling overjoyed, but also a little anxious. The final five ticket holders, Pete and Melinda Joyce, Curtis and Denise Pieper, Ron and Terry Mull, Sue and Terry Drawbaugh, and Bradlee Drawbaugh, decided to play it safe and made a deal…to split the pot of $5,000 and each take home $1,000. Next year’s event will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014. Mark your calendars now and join our growing list of Big Green winners.
